RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Some movies need twenty minutes before you understand what they’re trying to do. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP needs about that long before you realize understanding probably isn’t the point.<\/p>\n

\n

Jeffrey Lau’s 1987 Hong Kong horror-comedy throws ghosts, vampires, slapstick, cops, wartime history, broad physical comedy, supernatural mythology, and seemingly whatever else happened to sound entertaining into the same movie. The result is wildly uneven, occasionally exhausting, sometimes genuinely creepy, and just strange enough that I had a difficult time being mad at it. One detail also hangs over the whole thing and gets funnier the longer you watch. Wong Kar-wai co-wrote it. Yes, that Wong Kar-wai.<\/p>\n

Long before CHUNGKING EXPRESS, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, or HAPPY TOGETHER, his name appeared on something where bumbling police officers run around battling supernatural creatures. At the same time, sight gags, pratfalls, and horror references arrive from every direction. Anyone walking into THE HAUNTED COP SHOP hoping to discover an early blueprint for the filmmaker he would eventually become is probably going to leave confused. That somehow makes the movie even more fascinating.<\/p>\n

The police station at the heart of the story occupies a location once used by Japanese soldiers during the occupation of Hong Kong, with the dead refusing to remain completely dead. When thief Sneaky Ming becomes tangled up in the station’s supernatural history, restless spirits begin causing problems for officers Kam Mark-K and Man-Chill, played by Jacky Cheung and Ricky Hui. That description makes the movie sound considerably more organized than it actually is.<\/p>\n

For a good stretch, THE HAUNTED COP SHOP behaves less like a supernatural narrative and more like somebody dropped two incompetent police officers into an endless sketch comedy routine. Mark-K and Man-Chill bumble through their jobs, torment each other, make terrible decisions, and generate problems at almost the same rate they solve them. The humor is broad. Very broad.<\/p>\n

People fall. People misunderstand obvious situations. Characters panic, scream, run, and frequently behave as though basic survival instincts have abandoned them. Some jokes land because Cheung and Hui fully commit to the physical comedy. Others keep going beyond the point where the gag has already exhausted itself. That unevenness becomes the movie’s biggest obstacle.<\/p>\n

Early on, moments suggest something darker and stranger than the comedy around it. The idea of a police station built over a site tied to wartime death carries real horror potential, and Lau occasionally taps into it with atmospheric lighting, eerie figures, and scenes where the spirits genuinely feel threatening. Then somebody does something ridiculous.<\/p>\n

Normally that kind of tonal collision would bother me more. Hong Kong genre films from this period often seem completely uninterested in drawing firm boundaries between horror, comedy, action, and fantasy. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP doesn’t transition between those genres so much as stack them on top of one another and hope everyone survives. Sometimes that approach works wonderfully.<\/p>\n

There’s a looseness here that contemporary genre movies rarely allow themselves. Nobody seems worried about whether a joke undermines the horror or whether a supernatural sequence interrupts the comedy. Lau simply keeps throwing ideas at the screen, and that unpredictability gives even the weaker stretches a certain scrappy charm. The movie improves considerably once the haunting fully takes control.<\/p>\n

When the supernatural elements stop being occasional interruptions and begin driving the story, the chaos finally gains some direction. Ghosts and vampires become active threats, the police station turns into a playground for horror setups, and the physical comedy starts working with the danger instead of competing against it.<\/p>\n

One sequence involving keys near a restrained female vampire is a particularly good example of what the movie can accomplish when it slows down long enough to create actual tension. The situation is simple, but Lau stretches the moment through proximity and anticipation. Suddenly the characters’ stupidity isn’t merely a source of comedy; it makes the danger worse. Those moments made me wish the movie had found this balance earlier.<\/p>\n

Jacky Cheung is enormously watchable throughout, particularly because his facial expressions can sell jokes that aren’t especially strong on paper. Ricky Hui matches the manic tone, although putting two characters with such similar goofball energy at the center occasionally becomes overwhelming. Most comedies like this give the audience one relatively grounded character to react to the lunatic. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP frequently gives you two lunatics.<\/p>\n

Kitty Chan provides some needed contrast as Madam Fanny Ho, bringing considerably more competence into a movie populated by people who regularly seem capable of injuring themselves while standing still. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t always give her as much agency as the character initially promises, particularly once the supernatural threat escalates. The supporting cast adds even more personalities without making the story any cleaner.<\/p>\n

Billy Lau’s Sneaky Ming becomes an important piece of the supernatural mess. At the same time, the appearance of ghostly and vampiric figures pushes the film further away from anything resembling a conventional police comedy. By the second half, it feels less like the movie has shifted genres and more like it has simply revealed all the genres it had been hiding. The horror references add another layer of fun.<\/p>\n

Some moments immediately recall THE SHINING, while the broader mix of supernatural threats, physical comedy, and Taoist-influenced horror naturally invites comparisons to MR. VAMPIRE and ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP isn’t as polished or satisfying as the best films operating in that space, but it understands the appeal. The ghosts don’t need to stop the jokes, and the jokes don’t need to stop the monsters. Everything can happen at once.<\/p>\n

That philosophy also explains why the movie can feel exhausting. There’s rarely much breathing room between ideas, and narrative coherence frequently takes a back seat to whatever gag or supernatural encounter the filmmakers want to stage next. Characters can disappear from focus, story threads can feel half-developed, and the movie occasionally behaves as though it forgot what it was doing ten minutes earlier. I’m not convinced that matters as much here as it would elsewhere.<\/p>\n

This period of Hong Kong cinema has a cultural and filmmaking rhythm that doesn’t always map neatly onto the storytelling expectations of modern American genre films. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP can feel chaotic because it is chaotic, but that chaos is also part of what makes it interesting.<\/p>\n

The new 88 Films Blu-ray makes this a particularly good time to revisit it. The October 6 release includes a new 2K restoration from the original negative, remastered Cantonese mono audio, newly translated English subtitles, a Frank Djeng commentary, a James Mudge appreciation, alternate and extended material, galleries, trailers, reversible artwork, and an O-ring slipcover. That’s a lot of attention for something this delightfully weird.<\/p>\n

Physical media releases like this are also where labels such as 88 Films become important. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP isn’t a universally known title waiting for another anniversary edition. It’s exactly the kind of cult Hong Kong genre movie that can easily remain inaccessible or circulate through compromised presentations unless somebody decides it deserves preservation. It does.<\/p>\n

Not because it’s some forgotten masterpiece, and certainly not because Wong Kar-wai’s name suddenly transforms every pratfall into hidden genius. It deserves preservation because movies this specific are snapshots of a filmmaking culture and period that operated with completely different rules. THE HAUNTED COP SHOP can be ridiculous, messy, repetitive, and occasionally irritating. It can also be clever, creepy, energetic, and genuinely funny. Sometimes it manages all of those things within the same five minutes.<\/p>\n

By the time the movie reaches its supernatural chaos, I've largely stopped worrying about whether everything fits together. The appeal became watching Lau, Cheung, Hui, and everyone else keep escalating the madness until there was nowhere else to go. I’m also pretty glad nobody stopped them from trying it all.<\/p>\n
