RAVING REVIEW: There’s something strangely appropriate about watching a group of men who built an empire around refusing to act their age finally admit that age has caught up with them. JACKASS: BEST AND LAST still has testicles getting crushed, bodily fluids going places they shouldn’t, and grown adults agreeing to situations that should immediately make any reasonable person leave the room, but underneath all of it sits an unavoidable realization. These guys can’t keep doing this forever.

Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Dave England, Preston Lacy, and Ehren McGhehey have been hurting themselves for our amusement for roughly a quarter century. Director Jeff Tremaine doesn’t pretend BEST AND LAST is simply another round of increasingly ridiculous stunts. Instead, it spends a considerable amount of its 92 minutes looking backward, mixing new material with classic footage, previously unseen bits, and reminders of just how completely ridiculous this entire phenomenon has always been.

That approach is also the movie’s biggest limitation. Calling this the fifth JACKASS movie creates an expectation that BEST AND LAST will deliver another full collection of new stupidity, when much of it plays closer to a feature-length retrospective. Some of the old material is undeniable, and seeing certain moments again reminds you how perfectly this group understood the simplest forms of physical comedy. At the same time, there are stretches where it's hard to ignore that you’re essentially watching clips you’ve already seen.

The better archival material comes from footage that hasn’t been endlessly replayed over the years. Going all the way back to Knoxville’s early experiments, including the infamous bulletproof vest stunt that helped put this entire machine into motion, gives the movie a sense of history beyond merely replaying another favorite bit. The difference between Knoxville then and Knoxville now says plenty without anyone needing to turn the moment into a serious documentary about aging.

Seriousness has never been particularly useful to JACKASS anyway. These movies work because everyone involved seems to understand exactly how stupid everything is, and the laughter between the cast has always been as important as whatever terrible thing they’ve convinced someone to do. Knoxville’s cackle remains one of the franchise’s most reliable weapons. Hearing him completely lose it while somebody else suffers can make an otherwise simple gag infinitely funnier.

The new material proves they can still find fresh ways to be revolting. A robot-assisted prostate exam and an especially miserable game of Twister fueled by laxatives feel perfectly at home in this world, even as the nature of the stunts has understandably shifted. Knoxville’s history of serious injuries means there’s only so much punishment he can continue absorbing, and BEST AND LAST never feels like it needs him to die again just to justify its existence.

That limitation occasionally helps the movie. JACKASS has always benefited from ideas so basic that explaining them ruins the joke, and the funniest moments here don’t necessarily involve elaborate setups. Give these people an object capable of causing pain, point a camera at them, and somebody will eventually volunteer to make a horrible decision. The anticipation is frequently as funny as the impact because everyone knows exactly what’s coming except, occasionally, the person about to experience it.

Not everything new deserves to sit alongside the franchise’s better moments. Several bits feel like ideas that would’ve once been relegated to bonus footage rather than major segments of a theatrical release, and the reliance on older material makes those weaker additions stand out more. When BEST AND LAST cuts from a legendary stunt to something newly filmed that doesn’t hit nearly as hard, the comparison isn’t doing the movie any favors.

The newer JACKASS members also remain caught in an awkward position. Zach Holmes and Poopies throw themselves into the insanity with admirable commitment, while Rachel Wolfson, Jasper Dolphin, and others help expand the group beyond the original lineup. They’re capable additions, but BEST AND LAST is fundamentally interested in saying goodbye to the people who started this, which naturally leaves some of the newer crew fighting for space in someone else’s farewell.

Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn inevitably carry a different weight whenever they appear in archival footage. The movie doesn’t need to stop everything and explain their significance because anyone who has followed JACKASS understands what those images mean. Time has changed this group in ways considerably more serious than gray hair and bodies that don’t bounce back as quickly.

That history is where BEST AND LAST finds an emotional quality that would’ve seemed absurd to associate with JACKASS when the MTV series started. These people have spent decades humiliating, tormenting, injuring, and laughing at each other, yet the affection between them has never been particularly difficult to see. The cruelty works because the friendship underneath it feels genuine.

There’s even something comforting about seeing Chris Pontius wandering around without clothes again or watching Steve-O approach another terrible idea with the enthusiasm of someone who has somehow learned countless life lessons without learning this particular one. They’ve changed enormously as people while remaining remarkably committed to the exact behavior that introduced them to the world.

BEST AND LAST ultimately works better as a celebration than as a standalone JACKASS movie. Anyone hoping for 90 uninterrupted minutes of completely new material will likely wonder why so much familiar footage is included, and that criticism is hard to dismiss. There simply isn’t enough new material here to make this feel as substantial as JACKASS FOREVER did four years earlier.

Yet reducing the movie to a clip show misses why some of that repetition works. Watching these guys in their twenties beside footage of them in their fifties creates a timeline of friendship told through broken bones, terrible ideas, naked bodies, and uncontrolled laughter. Nobody involved could’ve known that something this deliberately stupid would survive for 25 years.

Maybe that’s why the goodbye lands even when the movie surrounding it is uneven. JACKASS: BEST AND LAST isn’t the strongest entry in the series, nor does it completely justify another theatrical feature through new material alone. As one final chance to sit with Knoxville and his collection of idiots, laugh at things we probably shouldn’t find funny, and appreciate how bizarrely durable this group became, it does the job.

If this really is the end, they’ve earned the right to leave without trying to top every injury that came before. After 25 years of watching them discover increasingly creative ways to hurt themselves, simply seeing everyone standing together at the finish line feels like an achievement in itself.
