RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Full transparency here, there’s a different kind of anticipation that comes with finally getting to watch a movie you helped back on Kickstarter (to be clear, I only did the Blu-ray level backing, so I wasn’t a producer or anything, but I still like to be transparent). You’ve watched the updates roll in, seen the project hit milestones, and spent months hoping the finished movie resembles what convinced you to back it in the first place. SLAY made that wait so much easier because everything about Kyra Elise Gardner’s feature screamed that the people making it genuinely loved what they were doing, not just how popular they are. That love is obvious almost immediately. And let me be clear! This production has a lot of notable names involved! Obviously, Kyra carries expectations with her family connections and previous projects. But then you walk into the writers’ room and see names like Jimmi Simpson, Catherine Clark, and arguably the film’s star, Zoey Luna. Beyond that, the cast is stacked with recognizable faces and plenty of new names.<\/p>\n

SLAY introduces Chloe Cruz (Zoey Luna), someone whose life has essentially unfolded in front of an audience. Social media has given her popularity, opportunities, and an identity thousands of people think they understand, but it's also created something much harder to escape. Chloe is preparing for the next stage of her life when murder suddenly tears through her social circle, sending her and her friends away to a secluded cabin where grieving quickly turns into survival. Yeah, obviously we know what kind of movie this is. A group of people heads to an isolated getaway. Their personal problems follow right behind them. Someone puts on an (iconic) mask. Bodies start dropping. The survivors start questioning everything and everyone. SLAY knows it and leans into it.<\/p>\n

Instead of pretending that decades of slashers haven’t already taught audiences the rules, Gardner uses those expectations as part of the fun. The movie has plenty of iconic horror moments in its DNA, but I can’t knock the comparison that keeps getting attached to SLAY! CLUELESS meets SCREAM, and I can more than see that. The characters can be funny, petty, fashionable, self-involved, affectionate, cruel, and occasionally ridiculous without the horror becoming an afterthought.<\/p>\n

That balancing act is harder than it looks. Horror-comedies often reach a point where one half starts eating the other, either making the deaths around everyone almost impossible to take seriously or becoming so grim that the jokes feel forced. SLAY understands that the comedy should come from these characters and their relationships, not from having exaggerated jokes shoved down your throat. The friend group is such a huge part of what makes it work.<\/p>\n

These are people with history everywhere, with friendships shifting by the moment. Feelings going unspoken. Some people are closer to Chloe than others, while others are clearly around her because Chloe has spent years becoming the person everyone else needs just to be around. Those struggles give the film a real-world connection and give the mystery something to work with once Kid Face starts the attacks, because everyone has some emotional baggage that could become a motive. Luna gets a genuinely complicated role as Chloe because the movie doesn’t require her to be lovable all the time. That matters more than you think, and it gives the film depth.<\/p>\n

Chloe can be warm and vulnerable, but she’s also spent much of her life treating a camera as another person in the room. That kind of existence gives her portrayal an understandable selfishness, and SLAY lets her make choices that aren’t best for anyone. The movie never makes her just a social-media stereotype. Luna has enough humanity beneath the carefully managed public image that Chloe remains worth following, even when the movie asks whether her friends have legitimate reasons to be frustrated. It also makes the influencer parts work better than expected.<\/p>\n

By 2026, we’ve already had movies attack social media culture for so long that the subject is becoming boring at times. SLAY avoids the predictable path here. The problem isn’t that young people use their phones too much or care about followers. It’s that Chloe has grown up learning to convert her life into content, and there’s no dividing line between the person and the product anymore. That becomes especially interesting once something horrific happens. When does sharing become exploitation? <\/p>\n

Kid Face is a wonderfully memorable visual, and the movie never holds back when the attacks start. The kills have enough personality to feel satisfying without turning every death into an elaborate effects demo. The violence has a playfulness that matches the rest of the movie, and the presentation keeps SLAY from becoming a miserable cabin-in-the-woods story where everything disappears into gray and black. The movie looks like it wants you to have fun watching people get murdered!<\/p>\n

Gardner clearly knows horror beyond the handful of titles everyone references. Some of the nods are obvious, particularly to SCREAM, while other easter eggs come from costumes, character choices, and small references that don’t demand that you find everything, but it’s fun trying. Shawnee Smith’s presence is especially fun because the movie knows what having a SAW veteran in this world means without turning her appearance into too much.<\/p>\n

The supporting cast gets enough room to keep Chloe from becoming the movie’s only focus. Sean Giambrone, Malina Pauli Weissman, Talia Jackson, Ruby McCollister, Beck Nolan, and the rest of the group each bring something different to the cabin, whether it’s the emotional history, comedy, suspicion, or someone you start worrying won’t survive the night. That becomes increasingly important as the movie enters its final stretch.<\/p>\n

What I appreciate most about SLAY is that it doesn’t confuse familiarity with failure. Gardner isn’t trying to convince us that there’s never been a movie about teenagers in an isolated house with a masked murderer before. She embraces exactly what kind of movie she’s making, then asks what personalities, perspectives, and anxieties she can bring in. That’s exactly what I want from a slasher in 2026.<\/p>\n

Give me the mask. Give me the ridiculous personalities. Give me friendships that are already cracking before anyone feels threatened. Give me suspects, blood, jokes, questionable decisions, and a final arc where everyone discovers that whatever drama seemed important earlier suddenly feels a whole lot smaller. Then add something of your own. SLAY does just that and then some.<\/p>\n

Following this project from a crowdfunding campaign to a finished feature might be the most satisfying part. The movie that eventually came from it all still feels like the scrappy, horror-loving production it promised to be, only now there’s so much personality behind all that enthusiasm. For a genre that has been declared dead and resurrected more times than most of its villains, that personality counts for a lot.<\/p>\n
