RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>From the start, GALICIA! feels familiar in some ways. Anna Maguire and Kyle Greenberg arrive in Spain with a camera, visit friends working at a winery, drink, wander around, and record the moments that normally end up forgotten somewhere in the ether. That’s so important here, because the film needs us to settle into the idea that we’re simply watching people document a trip, before it starts asking what those images would mean if nobody were left to return home to.<\/p>\n

The identity of GALICIA! Is built around that idea, but the most interesting part isn’t really the apocalypse. Maguire and Greenberg have spent much of their filmmaking career working with cameras, the ideas of observation, and versions of themselves, and their first feature feels like the logical expansion of those ideas rather than an attempt to abandon them for something bigger. HI! YOU ARE CURRENTLY BEING RECORDED turned surveillance into both the format and source of its paranoia. At the same time, FRENCH LESSONS used an apparently casual conversation to poke at performance, ambition and film culture. GALICIA! takes that fascination with the unstable line between reality and performance and lets it stretch across an entire feature.<\/p>\n

Maguire and Greenberg once again play Anna and Kyle, though treating either character as a representation of the filmmakers would miss the joke. They lean into exaggerated versions of themselves. Their roles are as tourists trapped inside their own experience, even when surrounded by people and places that they should be focusing on. The camera becomes part diary, part shield, and occasionally part nuisance, turning the act of recording the vacation into something the movie can examine.<\/p>\n

A strange animal, an unfortunate coincidence, or something glimpsed in passing can remain meaningless until you know where the story is heading. GALICIA! understands how quickly people start organizing unrelated events into patterns once they're scared, and the found-footage format makes that especially effective because we’re already trained to scrutinize anything a camera captures.<\/p>\n

The film was shot during the 2024 harvest at Purrela Wines in Galicia, and those surroundings give those scenes a texture that would have been difficult to manufacture. There’s work being done, food and wine being shared, and people who don’t feel like supporting characters patiently waiting for a plot to arrive. That reality becomes the foundation of the fictional exploration instead of something the filmmakers constantly have to work around.<\/p>\n

It also explains why GALICIA! can occasionally feel closer to an actual travel diary than a conventional feature. Maguire and Greenberg leave room for conversations and distractions that another movie might have cut in the edit. I didn’t mind that patience nearly as much as I thought I would. The longer GALICIA! feels “normal”, the more unsettling it becomes as that slips away, and the filmmakers understand that the apocalypse doesn’t have to scream at the audience in every scene. Things start to feel incomplete. Routines stop making sense. The camera keeps collecting pieces while the people holding it have less certainty about what those pieces mean.<\/p>\n

A dark comedy also runs underneath it all, keeping the movie from becoming oppressively serious. Maguire and Greenberg are willing to make themselves look absurd, selfish, or simply irritating, which helps the hybrid-documentary approach avoid the self-importance that could easily sink an experiment like this. They aren’t positioning themselves as the two people who somehow understand the apocalypse better than everyone around them. For much of the film, they barely seem capable of understanding their vacation.<\/p>\n

FRENCH LESSONS worked because it recognized that the business surrounding independent filmmaking can be both frustrating and absurd, while HI! YOU ARE CURRENTLY BEING RECORDED found humor sitting uncomfortably close to paranoia. GALICIA! combines those ideas naturally because it has enough room for comedy, anxiety, and genuine affection for the people and environment being documented without requiring any one of them to control the entire movie.<\/p>\n

Anna Maguire remains most effective when the journey around them begins to slide away from just observation. There’s an immediacy to watching someone respond rather than perform, even while knowing that the movie is intentionally manipulating that distinction. Kyle Greenberg plays the same game from another angle, and their familiarity with one another helps the footage maintain the feeling that the camera has simply stayed on longer than it probably should have.<\/p>\n

GALICIA! quietly changes the question behind why anybody records anything in the first place. Vacation footage is usually recorded with the assumption that a future version of ourselves will want to look back. Once that future becomes uncertain, every stupid joke, meal, argument, and random shot of the landscape carries a different weight. GALICIA! doesn’t need to provide a detailed geopolitical explanation or stop everything for exposition because doing so would violate the perspective it has established. These people know what someone on vacation would know, which isn’t much, and the uncertainty lets the film stay personal even as its implications grow enormous.<\/p>\n

At times, the conceptual side is stronger than the emotional one. The shift from holiday documentation to an archive of possible extinction is clever enough that I occasionally found myself admiring the construction more than reacting to what was happening to the characters. Ultimately, it keeps GALICIA! just shy of becoming as devastating as its premise could allow, although pushing harder for conventional emotion would have damaged the authenticity that makes the experiment work.<\/p>\n

The 66-minute runtime ends up being an especially good decision. This could easily have become one of those independent features where a short idea gets stretched until its limitations are impossible to ignore, particularly since Maguire and Greenberg originally worked in that format. Instead, GALICIA! feels deliberately small. It has enough time to establish the world, let that world become unstable, and then leave us with what remains.<\/p>\n

Seeing it after the two shorts also makes the film considerably more interesting. Anna was watched in HI! YOU ARE CURRENTLY BEING RECORDED, Kyle played a version of himself in FRENCH LESSONS, and GALICIA! puts both filmmakers in front of the camera together while making the camera itself increasingly difficult to separate from their experience. The connection doesn't require anyone to have seen the earlier films, but knowing them makes this feel like the natural conclusion of an experiment Maguire and Greenberg have been testing from different directions.<\/p>\n

GALICIA! doesn't abandon the scrappy approach or curiosity that made the shorts memorable just because there's now an hour to fill. If anything, the larger format exposes how much of their work has been connected by the same question. Once someone starts recording reality, how long does it take before the camera changes what reality means?<\/p>\n

By the time GALICIA! reaches the end, the wine almost feels like a trick used to get us through the door. What starts as an enjoyably messy record of friends, travel and a harvest gradually becomes something closer to an artifact, leaving behind images whose importance the people recording them could never have understood when they pressed the button.<\/p>\n

Maguire and Greenberg have made a strange first feature, but "strange" has increasingly become the point of what they're doing together. GALICIA! is funny until it isn't, fictional until reality pushes back against that distinction, and casual until the images suddenly feel a lot more important.<\/p>\n
