I've spent enough money on movies to know how ridiculous a hobby can look from the outside, but even I struggle to wrap my head around someone paying thousands of dollars for an old pair of jeans. That obsession drives Eugene Kotlyarenko's VINTAGE VIOLENCE, which follows a livestreamer who discovers that the right vintage denim could make him a fortune. Unfortunately for him, he's hardly the only person interested in getting rich, and what starts as an opportunity for easy money quickly becomes a much more dangerous adventure.

Yeah, I won’t lie, that synopsis is weird, and the overreliance on the vertical phone format can get tiring; the film really thrives when it backs up a step and pulls us away from it. Carter (Cole Sprouse) is a disgraced urban-exploration streamer trying to keep his online career alive after the death of a former partner. While broadcasting from an abandoned Colorado mine, he discovers a stash of vintage denim that draws attention from viewers who understand what he's found better than he does. One of them is Izumi (Kiko Mizuhara), a woman in Japan who convinces Carter that the jeans could bring him a fortune if he travels to Tokyo.

Carter sees money, a resurgence, and something that feels almost like an online romance. Izumi sees an opportunity made more complicated by her boyfriend Hiro (Nijiro Murakami), his debts, and a criminal world where those old jeans become far more than Carter expected. What follows is part crime movie, part romantic comedy, part social-media satire, and eventually something approaching a live-action feed left open as everyone involved starts losing control.

The jeans are funny because everyone takes them so seriously. Hio Miyazawa's Edoga doesn't just appreciate denim; his obsession turns them into something approaching a status symbol, a religious artifact, and a financial weapon. The joke could have worn itself out quickly, but the movie keeps finding new ways to make the intensity surrounding a pile of jeans feel increasingly ridiculous.

It also isn't as random as it sounds. VINTAGE VIOLENCE is fascinated with value and who gets to decide what something is worth. Carter's reputation collapsed online, but his viewers still give him value by continuing to watch. Izumi presents a version of herself through a screen before Carter actually meets her. Even violence becomes something that can be captured, shared, and consumed.

Writer/directer Eugene Kotlyarenko has been playing with that relationship between people and screens for years, and VINTAGE VIOLENCE may be one of his most aggressive attempts to collapse the distance between them. Livestream footage, messages, calls, split screens, comments, conventional photography, and multiple perspectives all compete for space. The movie doesn't separate the "online" portions from the "real" world because Carter doesn't experience his life that way.

That makes VINTAGE VIOLENCE feel like a mixed-media experience without just throwing social-media references into the dialogue. Carter isn't a guy who occasionally uses his phone. The phone is another part of how he understands where he is, how others understand him, and whether anything around him matters. In one chase, Carter tracks his stolen phone through the changing connection in his earbuds, turning a simple piece of technology into an unusually effective way to navigate the action. Elsewhere, the different screens show how the same event changes depending on whether we're watching the person experiencing it or the version being fed to everyone online. There are also moments when I wanted the movie to stop putting things in front of me for about thirty seconds.

VINTAGE VIOLENCE is relentless. Images on top of images, conversations overlap with digital feeds, jokes lead directly into violence, new characters appear. At the same time, previous issues are still unfolding, and Kotlyarenko seems almost allergic to leaving space in the frame. That overload is clearly deliberate, but understanding why something is exhausting doesn't automatically make it less exhausting. The style works best when all that information serves a specific purpose. When the visual clutter simply becomes another layer of noise, the movie starts competing with itself. A joke can disappear under the next before it works, and character moments sometimes feel like they're fighting the editing for permission to exist.

Sprouse and Mizuhara have enough chemistry to make their online connection believable, and the story leaves it unclear how much of Izumi's interest in Carter is real. She needs him, she may be using him, and she also seems increasingly drawn to him in ways that complicate whatever plan she had before he arrived. Mizuhara is particularly good at keeping Izumi so difficult to pin down. She can switch between playful, desperate, calculating, and sincere without those changes feeling like four completely separate characters. Izumi has more control than Carter at first, but that control becomes increasingly questionable as everyone else starts making their own moves.

Sprouse is smart enough not to compete with the insanity surrounding him. Carter is already ridiculous for continuing to livestream when most people would have put the phone away hours ago. Sprouse keeps that desperation for attention as part of the character without making him a complete idiot. His reputation is damaged, the death of his partner still follows him, and discovering the denim gives him a chance to turn his life into another story people might actually want to watch. The money is important, but being relevant again may matter just as much.

Once the Yakuza take over, VINTAGE VIOLENCE gets even stranger. Pierre Taki's Ko brings an almost cartoonish menace to the proceedings, including a bizarre weapon that sounds ridiculous written down and is even stranger when the movie actually uses it. Kotlyarenko keeps moving between gruesome violence and comedy without warning, so something unpleasant can become funny through sheer escalation. The tonal collision won't work for everyone. Sometimes it didn't completely work for me. Certain moments are treated with such irreverence that the movie risks turning everyone into another object being thrown into the chaos, particularly once the body count starts climbing.

VINTAGE VIOLENCE has personality everywhere. Sean Price Williams' cinematography embraces the crowded streets, strange interiors, neon, darkness, cramped rooms, and open spaces without trying to make Tokyo look like a polished travel commercial. The Japanese setting also gives Kotlyarenko room to play with the crime films he clearly loves. Traces of Yakuza movies, slapstick, exploitation cinema, romance, and gangster stories appear, but the movie doesn't settle into imitating any of them. The biggest casualty of that speed is the romance. Carter and Izumi have enough to make their relationship matter, and their initial connection through screens is one of the film's more intriguing ideas. Once they are together in Tokyo, however, the plot keeps interrupting them before the relationship can develop at the same speed as everything surrounding it.

Maybe asking VINTAGE VIOLENCE to slow down defeats the entire purpose. Kotlyarenko seems interested in what happens when tradition collides with how we consume information today. The answer is intentionally messy, funny, loud, violent, romantic, irritating, and occasionally brilliant. The contradictions are part of what kept me interested. A movie about rare denim turns into a criminal bloodbath. A livestreamer seeking renewed attention finds himself somewhere his audience can't actually protect him. A connection created through technology gets complicated when the people involved have to stand in the same room and deal with each other.

VINTAGE VIOLENCE eventually reaches the point where I'm as tired as I am entertained, and that keeps me from loving it as much as I admire the commitment behind it. The movie doesn't know when enough is enough, though I'm not convinced Kotlyarenko would see that as an insult. Plenty of movies try to comment on internet culture while feeling like the people making them have only heard someone younger describe social media. VINTAGE VIOLENCE actually understands the speed, stupidity, humor, cruelty, distraction, and strange intimacy of spending too much of life looking through a screen. Then it sends all of that to Tokyo and starts a gang war over jeans.

I can't say every idea works as well as I wanted, and the constant movement eventually wears me down, but I also can't pretend I wasn't curious about what would happen next. In a movie overflowing with screens, blood, romance, crime, fashion, and people making terrible decisions, being boring may be the only thing VINTAGE VIOLENCE never has time for.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

You can follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
