You build relationships, develop routines, and build an entire existence around a fictional identity, knowing you'll eventually have to abandon it all with little explanation. Returning to your real life shouldn't be the hard part. CIA operative Brandon Colby, better known by his codename Martian (Michael Fassbender), discovers that leaving his undercover assignment behind is much easier said than done. THE AGENCY, an American adaptation of the acclaimed French series THE BUREAU, takes this uncomfortable situation and builds an intelligent, frequently gripping espionage drama around people who have become so accustomed to lying that being truthful no longer comes naturally.

Martian is abruptly recalled to the CIA's London Station following six years of deep cover in Ethiopia. His assignment has ended, his former identity has been discarded, and his superiors expect him to resume his responsibilities as though he hasn't spent a considerable portion of his life pretending to be someone else. Unfortunately, Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), a woman he became romantically involved with during his assignment, complicates things. When she unexpectedly arrives in London, the relationship Martian was supposed to leave behind becomes a problem for both his personal life and professional responsibilities.

Fassbender is particularly well suited to this kind of character. Martian is intelligent, calculating, and extremely good at manipulating those around him, though his confidence often borders on arrogance. He's also emotionally compromised in ways that he doesn't seem particularly interested in acknowledging. Fassbender never makes him unnecessarily sympathetic, which is one of the more interesting aspects of his performance. Martian makes questionable decisions, ignores warnings, and regularly places his own interests above those of people who depend on him. Understanding why he behaves this way doesn't automatically make him likable, but it does make him an interesting person to spend ten episodes examining.

His relationship with Sami complicates matters because it exposes a part of him that doesn't fit comfortably within the intelligence community's expectations. Turner-Smith gives Sami enough independence that she never feels like a character who exists exclusively to create problems for Martian. She has professional obligations, personal concerns, and circumstances that extend well beyond their romantic involvement. Their relationship provides the series with an emotional foundation. The secrecy surrounding both characters also raises an ongoing question. How much can two people genuinely understand one another when so much of their lives remains concealed?

That romantic storyline also drives some of the season's less convincing material. Martian is repeatedly established as a highly experienced operative who understands the consequences of becoming emotionally involved while working undercover. His willingness to compromise his position occasionally becomes frustrating, especially when his judgment appears to deteriorate around Sami. The series recognizes his recklessness rather than pretending he's behaving rationally, but certain developments still require a little extra patience. The relationship matters to understanding the character, though it doesn't always draw as much interest as the intelligence operations unfolding around him.

Fortunately, THE AGENCY has an excellent supporting cast and several interconnected storylines that prevent everything from revolving around its leading man. Jeffrey Wright plays Henry Ogletree, Martian's superior and one of the few people who can challenge him without seeming intimidated. Wright brings a welcome sense of practicality to the role, particularly when dealing with situations complicated by conflicting priorities and the increasingly questionable decisions of those around him. Richard Gere, meanwhile, plays CIA London Station chief Bosko, a man whose responsibilities require him to consider the consequences of decisions being made far beyond his immediate surroundings.

Gere and Wright are especially enjoyable together. Their characters occupy different positions within the organization, but both understand that intelligence work involves political considerations that aren't always compatible with operational necessities. Neither actor needs an elaborate confrontation to convey the pressure these men face. A difficult conversation or uncomfortable exchange can show how serious a situation has become, and the series benefits enormously from letting its experienced performers handle that material without unnecessary theatrics.

One of the smartest decisions writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth make is giving the audience a clearer picture of intelligence operations beyond the familiar image of a lone agent operating in dangerous territory. The story examines surveillance, recruitment, psychological evaluation, diplomatic complications, and the management of undercover personnel. The resulting drama focuses far more on the machinery of espionage than on the glamorous lifestyle traditionally associated with fictional spies.

The storyline involving Danny (Saura Lightfoot-Leon), an aspiring undercover operative preparing for a demanding assignment, is particularly effective in this regard. Her experiences offer a different perspective from Martians, letting the audience understand what the profession demands while also seeing someone who's spent years dealing with its consequences. Lightfoot-Leon delivers an impressive performance, conveying both Danny's determination and the uncertainty of being placed in situations where an ordinary mistake can have serious repercussions. Her storyline became one of the season's most compelling, especially because the character hasn't yet developed the hardened attitude that defines many of her colleagues.

Katherine Waterston also impresses as Naomi, whose responsibilities include overseeing agents and navigating their complicated demands. Alongside Harriet Sansom Harris as Dr. Blake, the supporting characters help establish how thoroughly the intelligence community examines the people working within it. The psychological demands of maintaining a false identity aren't treated as something that disappears once an assignment ends, and those personal consequences remain an important part of the series.

THE AGENCY originated from Éric Rochant's French drama THE BUREAU, which examined the operations of France's foreign intelligence service. Rather than reinventing the material as a conventional American action thriller, this adaptation retains much of the original premise's interest in procedure, institutional politics, and the psychological toll of undercover work. The change in setting provides a different perspective on international intelligence operations, with London serving as the headquarters for an increasingly complicated collection of assignments and competing interests.

Director Joe Wright establishes the visual identity through the opening two episodes, creating an atmosphere that feels appropriately guarded and occasionally oppressive. Offices, meeting rooms, corridors, and surveillance environments become places where even an ordinary conversation deserves additional scrutiny. The production favors controlled compositions and a restrained presentation over exaggerated action sequences. That approach suits the material, letting relatively small interactions carry considerable weight without relying on constant physical confrontations to maintain interest.

The first season struggles to balance its numerous moving parts. Between Martian's personal complications, Danny's assignment, the situation involving an operative in Belarus, and the political concerns facing London Station, the writers introduce a substantial amount of information. Tracking the various personnel, operational objectives, and shifting priorities requires attention, and not every storyline receives the same level of development. Some procedural material becomes overly complicated, especially when the audience is expected to absorb additional intelligence terminology while following several separate developments.

The story also occasionally balances the larger international concerns with Martian's romantic entanglement. The latter is essential to his character, but returning to it can interrupt more interesting material involving the other operatives. This becomes particularly apparent as the supporting storylines develop and establish characters as deserving of attention as Fassbender's lead. A slightly more balanced distribution of that attention would've strengthened an already impressive ensemble.

Nevertheless, THE AGENCY succeeds because its characters are rarely afforded the luxury of making decisions without considering who else might suffer the consequences. Personal loyalty, professional responsibility, and national interests often clash, forcing people to make uncomfortable choices even when they know exactly what's expected of them. The writing also recognizes that being exceptionally good at intelligence work doesn't necessarily mean you're good at maintaining an ordinary life.

The season's ten episodes provide a satisfying introduction to this complicated environment, with an increasingly engaging collection of storylines supported by excellent performances and confident production values. Fassbender delivers a commanding lead performance, but Wright, Gere, Turner-Smith, and Lightfoot-Leon ensure there's plenty to watch beyond Martian's immediate circumstances. Occasional frustration with his romantic decisions and unnecessarily complicated stretches of exposition keep THE AGENCY from reaching its full potential, but there's considerably more to appreciate than criticize. It's an intelligent, adult-oriented espionage drama that understands the profession's greatest danger isn't always an enemy working against you. Sometimes it's the person you've spent years convincing yourself you are.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
