RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Being rejected by someone you're in love with is painful enough, but experiencing that rejection while you're still together creates an entirely different kind of loneliness. You start questioning your appearance, your behavior, and everything else you once felt reasonably confident about. The person who used to make you feel desirable suddenly becomes the person you're desperately trying to impress, and the harder you try, the less recognizable you become to yourself. Swedish filmmaker Fanni Metelius examines this uncomfortable emotional territory in her feature directorial debut, THE HEART, a refreshingly candid relationship drama that asks why we're so willing to compromise our own happiness to preserve a relationship that no longer satisfies us.<\/p>\n

Metelius also writes, edits, and stars as Mika, an independent young photographer who falls in love with Tesfay (Ahmed Berhan), an aspiring musician. Their initial attraction grows into a passionate relationship, and they eventually decide to move in together. The excitement that once defined their connection begins to deteriorate when Tesfay's interest in physical intimacy diminishes. Mika still loves him and wants to be close to him. His lack of sexual interest gradually leaves her feeling undesirable, confused, and increasingly disconnected from the relationship she thought she understood.<\/p>\n

One particularly interesting aspect of THE HEART is its willingness to challenge how male and female sexuality are typically represented on screen. We're so accustomed to stories involving men who want sex and women who feel pressured to accommodate them that reversing those expectations immediately changes how we perceive the conflict. Mika is comfortable expressing her sexuality and expects physical intimacy to remain an important part of her romantic relationship. Tesfay, meanwhile, doesn't share that same level of desire, creating an uncomfortable imbalance neither seems particularly equipped to address.<\/p>\n

Metelius doesn't suggest that Tesfay owes Mika sex simply because they're together, nor should his lack of interest automatically be interpreted as something inherently wrong with him. The problem comes from the emotional consequences of their incompatibility and their inability to communicate those differences in a way that leaves both people feeling understood. Mika begins to interpret his rejection as a reflection of her own inadequacy, and the resulting uncertainty gradually shapes how she behaves around him. It's a recognizable situation that receives considerably less attention in relationship dramas than infidelity, jealousy, or the usual collection of romantic misunderstandings.<\/p>\n

The film's most uncomfortable observations concern the subtle ways people change themselves in pursuit of another person's affection. Mika initially comes across as confident and independent, yet those qualities become increasingly difficult to maintain as she starts measuring her worth against Tesfay's response to her. The relationship develops an imbalance that neither character necessarily set out to create. Her desire for reassurance becomes entangled with his need for personal space, leaving both increasingly frustrated by something they struggle to articulate.<\/p>\n

Metelius brings an unusually personal perspective to the material. She has spoken about drawing inspiration from her own experiences of sexual rejection and the contradictions surrounding how young women are encouraged to view their sexuality. Those experiences inform a film that's considerably more interested in the emotional complications of intimacy than in providing an idealized picture of modern romance. Her decision to portray Mika herself also gives the production a consistent perspective, which becomes especially important when examining feelings of embarrassment, frustration, and vulnerability.<\/p>\n

The film's treatment of nudity and sexuality is another area where that perspective makes a meaningful difference. Physical intimacy isn't presented solely as exciting or visually appealing, and the camera doesn't treat Mika's body as an object for the audience. Sex becomes part of a much larger conversation about individual needs, bodily autonomy, and the uncomfortable distinction between being loved and feeling desired. Metelius also acknowledges female sexuality without presenting it as something unusual, embarrassing, or dependent on a man's approval. That shouldn't feel particularly revolutionary in 2026, although the frequency with which mainstream entertainment still approaches these subjects from a predominantly male perspective makes her presentation worthwhile.<\/p>\n

Ahmed Berhan has the difficult task of portraying a character whose behavior causes much of Mika's emotional distress without making Tesfay an easily identifiable villain. His performance establishes a man who isn't necessarily malicious, but whose inability to address growing problems in his relationship still has consequences. The distinction is important because THE HEART isn't interested in pretending every painful romantic experience requires one person to be entirely responsible for everything that goes wrong. People can genuinely care about one another and still be fundamentally incompatible in ways neither anticipated.<\/p>\n

That ambiguity also creates one of the film's frustrations. Tesfay occasionally feels less thoroughly examined than Mika, with his perspective receiving comparatively limited attention. The decision makes sense given the personal nature of Metelius' screenplay, but understanding his internal struggles in greater detail would've made their disagreements even more interesting. His emotional distance is essential to Mika's experience. However, the film sometimes makes him function primarily as the source of her uncertainty rather than giving him an equally developed personal identity.<\/p>\n

Visually, cinematographer Maja Dennhag embraces an intimate, naturalistic approach that complements the film's interest in ordinary relationships. The camerawork favors proximity over polished romantic imagery, letting personal interactions and uncomfortable moments unfold without making everything seem carefully arranged for dramatic effect. Metelius' editing similarly favors fragments of everyday experience, gradually establishing how the relationship changes through accumulated interactions rather than relying on one enormous confrontation to explain the characters' difficulties.<\/p>\n

That approach has its limitations, particularly when the film becomes so committed to authenticity that certain stretches feel unnecessarily prolonged. The loose structure occasionally makes the material feel repetitive, with similar emotional frustrations resurfacing without adding much to the characters' understanding. There's an important difference between letting an uncomfortable situation develop naturally and repeatedly showing something the audience already recognizes. Tightening a few of those passages would've given the film's stronger observations considerably more impact.<\/p>\n

The supporting characters also receive relatively little opportunity to develop beyond their relationship to Mika's personal experiences. Although focusing on the central couple is understandable, a deeper look at the people around them would've added another dimension to the story. Relationships don't exist in isolation, and the contrast between someone's public confidence and private insecurity is one of the more interesting subjects Metelius introduces. The film touches on those broader social expectations without always examining them as thoroughly as its central conflict deserves.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, THE HEART benefits from refusing to offer easy explanations for complicated emotional experiences. Metelius recognizes how quickly an otherwise affectionate relationship can become exhausting when two people have different expectations about intimacy. More importantly, she understands how easily someone can convince themselves that wanting affection, reassurance, or sexual fulfillment makes them unreasonable. Mika's experiences challenge that assumption while acknowledging that another person's boundaries remain equally important.<\/p>\n

Originally premiering at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2018, THE HEART arrives on digital platforms in the United States on October 23, 2026, courtesy of Film Movement. Its observations about dating, sexuality, and the expectations placed on romantic partners have remained relevant. Although its naturalistic approach occasionally works against its momentum, Metelius delivers an impressive debut with an emotionally grounded lead performance and a willingness to examine subjects that many relationship dramas either oversimplify or avoid altogether.<\/p>\n

THE HEART works so well because it understands that romantic disappointment doesn't always arrive through betrayal, dishonesty, or some enormous argument. Sometimes it develops between two people who still care for each other but have gradually stopped understanding what the other person needs. Metelius doesn't have all the answers, and her film occasionally struggles to explore both sides of the relationship with equal depth. Its willingness to acknowledge the complicated relationship between love, desire, and personal independence makes it worth seeking out. It's an intimate and occasionally uncomfortable reminder that loving another person shouldn't require abandoning the things that make you feel like yourself.<\/p>\n
