His FBI agent, Milton Dammers, is an unpleasant collection of rigid posture, personal damage, and misplaced certainty. He’s also a useful indication of what Peter Jackson is attempting with THE FRIGHTENERS. Almost anyone else introduces a character like this and lets him dominate the movie; Jackson gives him competition from nearly every direction.

That overcrowding is part of the appeal and part of the trouble. THE FRIGHTENERS has a crooked psychic, a team of ghostly accomplices, a supernatural killing spree, romantic complications, and an ugly history waiting to be uncovered. It starts as a comic scam and grows into something considerably more vicious. Jackson and co-writer Fran Walsh have plenty of material, though their enthusiasm for adding another complication occasionally outpaces their ability to make the existing ones feel complete.

The scam itself is a terrific premise. Frank Bannister, played by Michael J. Fox, really can see and communicate with the dead, but he uses that ability to manufacture business. His ghostly associates frighten homeowners, and Frank arrives to remove the disturbance for a fee. It’s dishonest work carried out with genuine supernatural talent, giving the comedy a practical foundation. These ghosts have become part of a shabby little operation, with the same squabbling and unreliability as any other questionable business.

Chi McBride and Jim Fyfe give Cyrus and Stuart an enjoyable back-and-forth, while John Astin’s Judge supplies another brand of unruly behavior. Their personalities make the afterlife seem populated by people who haven’t improved much since dying. Jackson gets considerable mileage from that lack of dignity. The dead bicker, fool around, and cause trouble, leaving Frank to manage a workforce nobody else can see.

Fox makes the arrangement easy to accept. His quick reactions and conversational ease suit a man who has to invent explanations while invisible partners sabotage his credibility. It’s a pleasure to watch him try to look professional in situations that are plainly beyond his control. He can sell an absurd exchange without asking the audience to admire the joke, which helps keep the early comedy moving.

Frank also carries a sadness that gives Fox more to play with. The death of his wife has left him detached from the town and from the life he once expected to have. His business provides money and distraction, but it doesn’t amount to recovery. Fox lets weariness sit beneath the charm, making Frank’s dishonesty feel rooted in a damaged person rather than a convenient comic trait. That emotional foundation becomes valuable when the hauntings stop being harmless.

A series of unexplained deaths forces Frank to confront a threat his usual tricks can’t handle. Now, his ability makes him a witness to things he struggles to explain, especially to people who already consider him a fraud. That’s a strong reversal. The talent he’s exploited becomes a responsibility, and his reputation makes it harder to act on it. The mystery gains tension from the gap between what Frank knows and what everyone around him is prepared to believe.

Trini Alvarado brings a welcome steadiness as Lucy Lynskey, a doctor who becomes involved in Frank’s increasingly dangerous circumstances. She gives the film a character who listens and responds without turning every exchange into a performance of eccentricity. Her rapport with Fox helps make the emotional passages accessible. The romantic development is less convincing, largely because the story moves them through so many emergencies that it leaves limited time for their connection to grow beyond those circumstances.

The darker material is more aggressive than the early ghost antics suggest. Jackson doesn’t restrict the danger to a threatening shape moving through a hallway. He brings human cruelty into the story, with Dee Wallace and Jake Busey contributing performances that make the violence feel personal and nasty. Their presence changes the film's temperature. The supernatural machinery becomes attached to people whose behavior is disturbing even without any help from the effects department.

Wallace is especially valuable because she can communicate unease without immediately explaining its source. Her Patricia Bradley belongs to a different emotional world from Frank’s comic business, and that distance gives her scenes an uncomfortable quality. Busey brings a more openly abrasive energy. Both performances help the film retain some threat when its rapid movement and elaborate effects risk turning danger into another busy attraction.

Combs pushes Dammers much further toward grotesque comedy. His mannerisms and hostility make him memorable, but the character also exposes the film’s difficulty with restraint. At times, his presence adds another obstacle for Frank; at others, it feels like the movie has stopped to enjoy how unpleasant he is. The performance is committed enough to make even the excess entertaining. Whether every appearance helps the story is a separate question.

Jackson’s visual imagination provides the strongest continuity across these tonal shifts. Spirits distort surfaces, move through solid objects, and turn familiar spaces into unstable environments. The effects have a tangible purpose within the scenes, giving the ghosts ways to interact with the living world rather than leaving them as transparent figures hovering beside actors. Some digital textures show their age, particularly when compared with the physical surroundings. The inventiveness of the images remains easier to appreciate than their realism.

THE FRIGHTENERS was an important early undertaking for Weta Digital, which developed technology specifically to meet its demands. That history helps explain the sense of discovery in the effects work. Jackson seems excited by the possibility of making walls, bodies, and architecture behave differently, and the film gives that excitement plenty of room. It also marks a substantial expansion of the resources available to a director whose earlier horror comedies had made a virtue of outrageous physical invention.

Danny Elfman’s score supports the uneasy mixture of playfulness and menace. It gives the film a recognizable musical personality while helping Jackson move between ghostly mischief and more threatening passages. Those shifts aren’t always smooth. The broadest jokes sometimes weaken the fear that a preceding scene has built, while the nastier material can make the next gag feel oddly placed. The film’s identity depends on that combination, but its best stretches manage the transition with more care than its busiest ones.

The final portion becomes overextended as revelations, pursuits, and supernatural complications compete for attention. Movement remains energetic, yet the accumulation makes individual confrontations feel less decisive. There’s a difference between increasing the stakes and adding another stage to the chase, and THE FRIGHTENERS sometimes settles for the latter. A little subtraction helps the emotional material register more clearly, especially when Frank’s history needs room amid the activity.

Arrow Video’s three-disc Limited Edition gives collectors substantial material to explore around that uneven but entertaining film. The UHD includes both the theatrical and director’s cuts, presented from a 4K restoration of the original camera negative with Dolby Vision and HDR10 compatibility. Their availability together is useful for a movie whose length and density are among its most debatable qualities. Viewers can compare the versions without assuming the longer cut automatically replaces the theatrical presentation.

The audio options are unusually thorough. Arrow includes the original theatrical 5.1 mix for the theatrical cut, stereo tracks for both versions, and a home video 5.1 mix for each. The director’s cut also includes an optional Dolby Atmos remix. The second disc presents both cuts in open matte on Blu-ray, providing a different framing option for viewers interested in how the film uses its images. These are listed specifications, rather than an assessment of playback quality.

The supplements give the release its clearest appeal beyond the film. The 225-minute THE MAKING OF THE FRIGHTENERS covers the production at considerable length, while the 2022 feature documentary NO WAY TO MAKE A LIVING: A LOOK BACK AT THE FRIGHTENERS adds retrospective interviews. Jackson’s commentary accompanies the director’s cut, and a separate conversation with Richard Taylor and Alexandre Poncet extends the effects coverage. The booklet brings together production notes, Jackson’s LaserDisc introduction, and contemporary American Cinematographer articles, making the package particularly relevant to people interested in the work behind the ghosts.

THE FRIGHTENERS is easiest to enjoy when its inventiveness has enough room to breathe. Fox gives Frank a wounded humanity, the supporting cast supplies an abundance of strange behavior, and Jackson keeps finding amusing or unsettling uses for the dead. The film gets tangled in its own activity, particularly as the mystery reaches its later stages, but its personality survives the congestion. Frank’s bargain with his ghostly friends remains the most inviting part of the whole enterprise. A genuinely gifted man has found the least respectable possible use for his talent, and Fox makes spending time with him a pleasure.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
