RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Billy Crudup makes a business meeting look like the most exciting thing Cory Ellison has ever attended. His smile widens as the conversation worsens, and every reassurance sounds like he’s enjoying a private joke at someone else’s expense. Three seasons into THE MORNING SHOW, watching Cory talk his way through a disaster remains one of the show’s most reliable pleasures. It also says plenty about this season that a network executive negotiating for his company’s survival can seem more comfortable than the journalists explaining why they deserve the public’s trust.<\/p>\n

\n

UBA needs money, and tech billionaire Paul Marks, played by Jon Hamm, has enough to make everyone reconsider their objections. His interest in buying the network gives the third season a useful source of conflict that reaches across the ensemble. Careers, editorial independence, personal relationships, and the company’s future all become part of the same negotiation. Under new showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, the series finds fresh energy in people trying to protect their positions while insisting they’re protecting something bigger.<\/p>\n

The potential sale is a strong organizing idea because it exposes how differently everyone defines a successful rescue. Cory wants to keep UBA alive, Alex Levy wants greater control over her future, and the people working beneath them need assurances that rarely arrive. Saving the company doesn’t necessarily mean saving its journalism or protecting its employees. Those competing interests give even routine conversations an edge, especially when someone uses concern for the newsroom to dress up a very personal demand.<\/p>\n

Hamm fits this environment immediately. Paul doesn’t need to announce his importance or bully anyone within reach; people are used to adjusting around him. Hamm makes the attention he gives someone feel flattering, which helps explain why intelligent people entertain arrangements they know require closer examination. His scenes with Jennifer Aniston also have an appealing ease. Their attraction gives Alex something to pursue beyond her next professional victory, while creating a conflict of interest that the show is right to make uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Aniston remains especially good at Alex’s impatience with anyone who interrupts her preferred version of events. She can be funny, wounded, dismissive, and persuasive within the same conversation without making those shifts feel disconnected. Alex wants respect, companionship, and influence, but she’s much less comfortable acknowledging how those desires affect her judgment. Aniston keeps that contradiction recognizable even when the writing gives Alex another opportunity to treat a reasonable objection as a personal betrayal.<\/p>\n

The season’s most compelling workplace material, though, belongs to Nicole Beharie as new morning anchor Chris Hunter. A former Olympian entering an institution that’s eager to celebrate her presence, Chris soon has reason to question how much that welcome actually means. Beharie brings control and specificity to scenes about racism and unequal treatment. Her measured delivery makes the effort behind Chris’s professionalism visible, particularly when colleagues expect her to absorb an insult and then help manage everyone else’s discomfort.<\/p>\n

An early interview involving Chris and Holland Taylor’s board member Cybil gives the season one of its strongest exchanges. The tension comes from listening to someone defend her self-image while failing to hear the person sitting opposite her. Beharie doesn’t overplay Chris’s reactions, and Taylor allows Cybil’s certainty to become increasingly revealing. It’s a focused piece of drama that earns its force through the conversation itself, with no need for an additional crisis to underline the stakes.<\/p>\n

That focus isn’t consistent across the season. THE MORNING SHOW has a habit of introducing an issue with enough substance to support several episodes, then redirecting its attention toward another character’s secret or relationship trouble. Chris makes such a strong impression that her reduced prominence elsewhere feels like a missed opportunity. Institutional problems also become easier to confront once they’re attached to an individual who can be publicly challenged. The show recognizes that removing one person doesn’t repair a workplace, but it doesn’t always give the remaining problems equal attention.<\/p>\n

Bradley Jackson’s storyline presents a different frustration. Reese Witherspoon convincingly portrays the strain of someone whose professional identity depends on convictions she struggles to live up to privately. Bradley’s relationship with Laura Peterson gives that conflict emotional weight, and Julianna Margulies brings a welcome directness to their exchanges. The circumstances surrounding Bradley become so elaborate that the plotting sometimes distracts from her choices. The ethical dilemma is substantial enough without every new complication tightening another connection within the same small group.<\/p>\n

Greta Lee and Karen Pittman help keep the wider workplace believable. Stella Bak’s controlled manner suggests constant calculation about what she can challenge and what she’s expected to tolerate. At the same time, Mia Jordan carries the exhaustion of keeping a broadcast functioning amid decisions made above her. Lee is particularly effective when Stella’s composure becomes part of an ugly professional obligation. These characters give the network a working life beyond its biggest personalities, making the uneven distribution of attention more noticeable.<\/p>\n

The production reinforces that world's appeal and isolation. Offices, expensive homes, and carefully managed social events give the characters plenty of beautiful places to conduct unpleasant conversations. Mimi Leder and the season’s other directors make good use of the difference between public performance and private behavior. A polished broadcast can sit beside a room full of people barely containing their anger, and the cast handles those changes in temperature well. The glossy presentation suits an institution that spends so much effort controlling how it appears.<\/p>\n

The use of recent history is less assured. The pandemic, January 6, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade all shape the characters’ lives, but the series sometimes rushes from public consequence to personal revelation. Its strongest treatment of these events comes through practical decisions about reporting, access, and responsibility. Its weaker passages rely on the event itself to supply emotional weight the surrounding storyline hasn’t fully earned.<\/p>\n

I’m honestly surprised it took me this long to get around to THE MORNING SHOW. A drama full of newsroom politics, messy relationships, and people whose professional standards get harder to maintain when their own careers are involved is right up my alley. Add this cast, and I don’t have much excuse for putting it off. It was always one of those shows I meant to start, and now that I’ve finally made the time, I’m glad I did.<\/p>\n

Across these ten episodes, I stayed invested in the sale and in the people trying to influence it, even when their behavior tested my patience. A conversation between Cory and Stella, or a difficult broadcast with Chris, often provides more satisfaction than the larger revelations around them. The excellent cast makes the competing ambitions worth following, even when the writing keeps reaching for another complication. Give these people a room, something they want, and a reason to distrust each other, and THE MORNING SHOW already has plenty to work with.<\/p>\n
