Its murder rate complicates that sales pitch, although YOU’RE KILLING ME makes the town inviting enough that people keep turning up anyway. The first season settles into that familiar pleasure of a cozy mystery: an attractive place, questionable neighbors, and investigators whose company matters as much as the answer. Brooke Shields and Amalia Williamson give this particular destination a good reason to make the trip.

Their characters aren’t especially pleased to find themselves working together. Shields plays Allie Chandler, an established mystery novelist facing the uncomfortable possibility that readers are moving on without her. Williamson’s Andi Walker is an aspiring writer and true-crime podcaster with opinions about the kind of fiction Allie produces. Neither woman needs much encouragement to tell the other where she’s going wrong, which creates a partnership with enough friction to sustain more than a polite exchange of clues.

The opening investigation begins at a literary convention, where the suspicious death of someone close to Allie gives her a personal reason to get involved. Andi sees an investigation worth pursuing, while the town’s new detective, Jack Kerrigan, has to contend with two civilians who aren’t inclined to wait for his updates. The setup establishes their overlapping interests without pretending they have identical motives. Allie’s grief, professional pride, and curiosity don’t always point in the same direction, and Andi’s ambition makes her an awkward companion for someone already feeling professionally vulnerable.

Shields is the main attraction, especially when Allie’s confidence meets a situation she can’t manage through reputation alone. Being successful at inventing fictional investigations doesn’t make her immune to embarrassment, defensiveness, or poor judgment. Shields lets Allie look flustered and occasionally ridiculous, which keeps her approachable despite her comfortable circumstances. Her authority comes with enough insecurity to give Williamson something to push against.

That comic approach gets a little broad at times. Allie’s reactions occasionally get more emphasis than the moment needs, especially when the dialogue already makes her frustration obvious. Shields works better when she lets an irritated response land with less preparation. The character’s pride provides plenty of comedy on its own, and the series doesn’t always trust that it has already made the joke.

Williamson gives Andi the confidence of someone ready to have her abilities recognized and unwilling to spend years waiting politely. Her impatience can be abrasive, but it also prevents the partnership from becoming an arrangement in which the younger woman simply admires her established counterpart. Andi challenges Allie’s assumptions while holding her own assumptions that deserve questioning. Their relationship becomes more enjoyable as each starts recognizing the usefulness of the other’s methods.

The generational humor is less consistent than the chemistry. Too many early exchanges treat age differences as enough material for a punch line, particularly around technology and contemporary habits. Allie has maintained a successful writing career, so presenting ordinary changes in communication as enormous obstacles makes her seem less capable than the surrounding story requires. Likewise, Andi doesn’t need to represent an entire generation’s impatience every time she speaks. Their particular personalities supply better disagreements than the broad categories the dialogue sometimes assigns them.

Tom Cavanagh provides a welcome third presence as Jack, a detective adjusting to a small community after city life. He has an easy manner that suits the material, and his exchanges with Shields allow the show to introduce romantic possibility without making every interaction about it. Jack also gives the investigations an official counterweight. Allie and Andi can speculate, interrupt, and pursue their own ideas, but somebody still has to deal with what can actually be established.

The three-person arrangement helps because it allows the relationships to shift. Allie and Andi aren’t permanently united against an obstructive police officer, and Jack doesn't exist solely to arrive once the civilians have done the interesting work. The pleasure comes from different combinations of confidence, irritation, and reluctant agreement. A conversation can reveal who’s taking whom seriously before it produces anything useful about the case.

Across six episodes, the series finds room for recognizable mystery situations, including a wedding, a copycat premise, and a writing retreat. Those settings give the investigations different social pressures rather than asking the initial convention story to carry the whole season. They also suit characters whose interest in other people is both a professional skill and a personal inconvenience. Writers need to observe behavior, but these two aren’t particularly good at leaving an observation alone once it starts bothering them.

The mysteries themselves are serviceable rather than especially challenging. Some developments depend on the freedom amateur investigators are routinely granted in this kind of television, and the writing occasionally makes access or cooperation feel easier than it should. The characters’ enthusiasm carries those passages further than strict plausibility does. There’s enough to follow and enough suspicious behavior to keep the questions moving, though the cases don’t consistently match the appeal of the people discussing them.

Visually, the Nova Scotia locations standing in for New England contribute a great deal. The waterfront setting and attractive buildings establish a community with a life beyond whichever crime has interrupted it. That pleasant appearance also supports the humor without requiring every resident to be an exaggerated eccentric. Directors James Genn, Scott Smith, and Paul Fox keep the presentation accessible, allowing conversations and reactions to carry much of the action.

The clearest family resemblance is to MURDER, SHE WROTE, though Allie is more openly flustered and romantically distracted than Jessica Fletcher. Pairing her with Andi also changes the appeal. Instead of relying on one reassuringly capable investigator, YOU’RE KILLING ME offers two people whose working relationship is still being negotiated. That gives the familiar amateur-sleuth format an ongoing source of movement even when an individual mystery is fairly ordinary.

Allie and Andi’s disagreements also carry an appealing professional insecurity beneath them. Allie has achieved the career Andi wants, yet success hasn’t protected her from worrying about whether anyone still values her work. Andi has the freedom to try something different, but she’s still fighting to be taken seriously. That gives them more in common than either initially acknowledges. Their arguments become more interesting when they reflect those anxieties, because neither woman approaches the other from the secure position she likes to project. The partnership gives both someone who understands the desire to tell stories, even when they disagree about how.

Acorn Media International’s UK DVD includes the six episodes across two discs, with Episode Diaries listed among the extras. The season’s strongest argument for returning, however, is the developing rapport among its leads. Allie has someone who won’t let her coast on past success, Andi has someone whose experience deserves more respect than she initially gives it, and Jack has two increasingly useful reasons to reconsider his patience. Their company makes another suspicious death in Founders Cove sound like a perfectly agreeable evening.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
