FOREVER gives Dr. Henry Morgan a job, a household, colleagues, and reasons to get involved in other people’s lives, which is a much better use of its premise than simply cataloging how he can survive dying. The supernatural mystery supplies an immediate hook. The ordinary attachments make these twenty-two episodes worth caring about, and they’re the reason its single-season run feels so unfairly brief.

Henry, played by Ioan Gruffudd, works as a New York City medical examiner while privately investigating his own inability to stay dead. He’s lived with that condition for roughly two centuries, accumulating knowledge and losses without a satisfying explanation. Whenever he dies, he returns naked in a body of water, creating practical problems alongside the larger existential ones. Keeping that process secret requires discretion that his curiosity doesn’t always allow.

The series gets considerable mileage from the contradiction between Henry’s expertise and his vulnerability. He can identify details other investigators overlook, yet he’s far less confident about letting someone become important to him. Gruffudd makes the intelligence attractive without treating Henry as someone everyone should admire. There’s pleasure in watching him follow an unexpected connection, especially when his enthusiasm makes him forget that others need an explanation.

His manner also leaves room for humor without making every scene depend on a joke. Henry approaches unusual evidence with the interest of someone who has spent a very long time finding the world fascinating. That curiosity keeps the character from becoming a solemn collection of tragic memories. Gruffudd lets him enjoy discovery, even when it happens in circumstances nobody else finds especially enjoyable.

The relationship with Abe, played by Judd Hirsch, best supports that characterization. Abe knows Henry’s secret and understands how quickly concern can become withdrawal. Their home life has the ease of people who don’t need to explain every habit, with affection expressed through teasing, impatience, and practical assistance. Hirsch keeps Abe occupied with his own life, which is essential. He’s a person Henry loves, not a convenient caretaker assigned to manage an immortal’s difficulties.

Their unusual family relationship also gives the premise consequences without requiring an elaborate mythology. Henry’s body stays the same while someone close to him grows older, changing how their connection appears to outsiders without changing what they mean to each other. The casting makes that discrepancy visible in every shared scene. Gruffudd and Hirsch don’t have to keep announcing the sadness involved; their comfort together gives the audience enough reason to recognize what Henry stands to lose.

Creator Matthew Miller developed the idea after a conversation with his young son about death, and that starting point helps explain the series’ priorities. FOREVER is as interested in the fear of separation as in the possibility of endless existence. Its best emotional material comes from people trying to remain close despite time, secrecy, and circumstances they can’t control. Immortality doesn’t remove those concerns for Henry. It gives him more experience with them and fewer excuses to believe he can avoid them forever.

Detective Jo Martinez brings a different kind of understanding. Alana de la Garza plays her as a capable investigator whose interest in Henry develops alongside reasonable questions about his behavior. She isn’t simply there to ask how he reached an astonishing conclusion. Jo has professional instincts, personal grief, and her own boundaries, making their working relationship feel reciprocal even though Henry has information he can’t share.

The chemistry between de la Garza and Gruffudd is particularly appealing because it goes beyond flirtation. Both characters understand loss, but neither knows the full extent of what the other is carrying. Their growing trust gives routine conversations some weight, especially when Henry’s efforts to protect his secret interfere with his ability to be honest. The attraction matters because the friendship already makes sense.

That friendship develops inside a recognizable network procedural, and the weekly investigations aren’t uniformly inventive. Some suspects and developments arrive with the familiarity of a format that needs to establish a problem, redirect suspicion, and provide an answer before the hour is over. Henry’s observational skill occasionally makes progress feel a little too convenient. The show is much more distinctive in its relationships than in every individual murder puzzle.

The historical flashbacks are a valuable way around that limitation. A present-day case can bring an earlier experience back into focus, giving Henry’s response a personal history that his colleagues don’t see. The strongest connections add something to our understanding of his judgment rather than simply explaining how he recognizes an object or a medical condition. They make his past an active influence on his behavior.

Occasionally, those connections fit together too neatly. Two hundred years provide plenty of opportunities for relevant experience, but the writing can be eager to supply a historical parallel for the current investigation. Henry’s reflective narration also sometimes explains a feeling the surrounding scenes have already conveyed. Less explanation leaves more room for the actors, who can communicate the point themselves.

The supporting ensemble makes the procedural setting worth returning to. Joel David Moore brings an eager, slightly awkward curiosity to Henry’s assistant Lucas, while Donnie Keshawarz and Lorraine Toussaint give the police side a welcome sense of routine and authority. Their presence lets Henry be unusual within a functioning workplace. That everyday structure gives the supernatural material something solid to disrupt.

Burn Gorman adds a more unsettling presence as Adam, whose connection to Henry opens up questions beyond the next case. Gorman is well suited to someone whose interest doesn’t feel reassuring, even when the conversation remains civil. His involvement gives the season a continuing source of tension while challenging Henry’s assumptions about his condition. The contrast helps because longevity alone doesn’t explain who either man has become.

FOREVER also deserves credit for understanding that a character’s inability to die doesn’t eliminate suspense. Henry can still be exposed, manipulated, separated from people, or placed in situations where surviving doesn’t solve the problem. More importantly, the people around him remain vulnerable. His condition creates opportunities for unusual solutions, but it never gives him complete control over the consequences.

Warner Archive’s Blu-ray collects all twenty-two episodes across six discs, with deleted scenes listed among the supplements. The release presents the series in its original widescreen framing, with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. For a show whose appeal depends so heavily on spending time with its cast, having the full run together is welcome. There’s enough here to establish an affectionate attachment rather than merely suggest one.

The cancellation does leave unfinished business, and the final episode was made as a season finale rather than a planned farewell. It still pays off significant material, so the experience isn’t simply twenty-two episodes of waiting for answers that never arrive. What hurts is recognizing how comfortably the series has settled into its relationships by the time it stops. Henry has spent centuries learning to keep his distance, and FOREVER becomes especially rewarding whenever he finds another reason to stop doing that.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
