As Scarlett O’Hara, she can turn a polite conversation into a competition before the other person realizes there’s a prize involved. Her expressions reveal the calculation behind her manners, while her impatience keeps threatening to break through. GONE WITH THE WIND has enormous sets, elaborate costumes, burning buildings, and a score determined to fill the room, but Leigh gives it the most dependable source of energy.

She’s also a major reason I find the film impressive without sharing the unconditional affection its reputation seems to demand. You can admire a lot of it over nearly four hours, especially when Scarlett’s resourcefulness collides with her terrible judgment. At times, emotional repetition takes over, along with a deeply compromised historical perspective that shapes far more than a handful of dated details. Calling it a classic is reasonable. Treating that designation as the end of the discussion leaves too much unexamined.

Adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s novel, the film begins in Georgia before the Civil War, with Scarlett enjoying the privileges of life at her family’s plantation, Tara. She’s surrounded by admirers but fixated on Ashley Wilkes, played by Leslie Howard, whose attachment to Melanie Hamilton, played by Olivia de Havilland, frustrates her expectations. Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler recognizes the selfishness beneath Scarlett’s social performance and finds it attractive. War then destroys the conditions that let her treat romantic disappointment as her greatest problem.

The physical transformation of that world supplies some of the film’s strongest storytelling. Rooms, clothing, food, and land change meaning as comfort gives way to survival. Scarlett’s attachment to Tara becomes understandable both for its practical importance and its emotional hold on her. Possessing a place to return to matters differently after displacement, hunger, and fear. The film is particularly persuasive when it allows those immediate needs to drive her decisions.

Leigh never smooths away the uglier parts of that determination. Scarlett can be brave, capable, manipulative, cruel, and foolish within the same stretch of the story. Her ability to act under pressure doesn’t grant her an equivalent understanding of herself or anyone else. That distinction gives the character substance. She learns to endure circumstances that once seemed unimaginable, yet she can still make the same emotional mistake with astonishing confidence.

The difficulty is how often the screenplay returns to that mistake. Scarlett’s investment in Ashley reveals her preference for an imagined life over the person standing in front of her. Eventually, though, another exchange confirms that preference contributes less than the film suggests. Howard’s restrained performance makes Ashley a useful contrast to Rhett, but it doesn’t make the prolonged romantic fixation equally compelling throughout. Understanding why Scarlett can’t let go doesn’t prevent the repetition from becoming tiring.

Gable gives Rhett an ease that immediately changes the atmosphere around her. He doesn’t require Scarlett to maintain the fiction that she’s gracious or selfless, and their exchanges benefit from the relief of dropping that performance. His amusement makes her indignation funnier, while her refusal to be easily managed gives him someone who can disrupt his confidence. Their attraction is convincing because each recognizes an appetite and stubbornness that polite society encourages them to disguise.

That chemistry doesn’t make the relationship uncomplicated or consistently romantic. Rhett’s possessiveness and the film’s treatment of sexual coercion are troubling, particularly where force is absorbed into its presentation of passion. Those elements deserve consideration as part of the relationship itself. The conflict between these characters can be fascinating without every expression of it becoming something to celebrate, and the film’s romantic reputation sometimes obscures how hostile their connection becomes.

De Havilland’s Melanie offers a different kind of strength. Her gentleness makes her easy for Scarlett to underestimate, but the performance gives that gentleness conviction. Melanie’s willingness to offer loyalty isn’t simply evidence that she lacks the intelligence to recognize difficulty. She makes choices according to values Scarlett struggles to understand. Their relationship becomes more interesting when those differences expose the limits of Scarlett’s judgment rather than merely supplying another obstacle to her pursuit of Ashley.

Hattie McDaniel brings authority and sharp observation to Mammy, often cutting through Scarlett’s attempts to present her motives more attractively. Her timing gives their exchanges a welcome directness, and her emotional presence contributes significantly to the household’s sense of continuity. McDaniel became the first Black performer to win an Academy Award for the role. That achievement belongs to her, even as the film confines the character to a life organized around the white family she serves.

Those restrictions are part of a much larger problem. GONE WITH THE WIND introduces the plantation South through explicit nostalgia for a supposedly gracious civilization, with slavery treated as part of the scenery supporting that fantasy. Its sorrow over the destruction of that world receives an expressive range denied to the people enslaved within it. The imbalance isn’t incidental. It determines whose losses become tragedy and whose freedom remains peripheral to the story.

The presentation of Reconstruction continues that distortion, directing sympathy toward the former plantation class while narrowing the lives and perspectives of Black characters. There’s no useful way to separate the film’s visual beauty from the version of history it helps sell. Tara’s appeal has been carefully constructed, and the labor sustaining it is largely denied an equivalent human reality. The film can be admired for how powerfully it creates an image while also being challenged for what that image conceals.

Its craftsmanship is considerable. The Technicolor photography gives costumes, skies, interiors, and landscapes an expressive intensity, while the production design communicates wealth and devastation through changes in scale and material detail. The famous movement across the wounded in Atlanta expands the frame beyond Scarlett’s immediate concerns, briefly making her one figure within an immense disaster. Images like that justify the film’s reputation for spectacle through composition and dramatic purpose.

Max Steiner’s score reinforces that scale, especially through the theme associated with Tara. The music gives the land an emotional identity that remains recognizable as Scarlett’s circumstances change. At times, the scoring's insistence also contributes to the film’s tendency to underscore feelings already established by the performances and imagery. Its emotional register stays elevated for so long that quieter passages become especially valuable.

The production itself was a massive undertaking shaped by producer David O. Selznick, with George Cukor and Sam Wood contributing direction alongside credited director Victor Fleming. That complicated history helps explain why discussing the film solely as one director’s achievement feels inadequate. Its enduring identity comes from an accumulation of contributions, including Leigh’s performance, the design, the photography, the editing, and the score. The coordination is often extraordinary, even when the storytelling doesn’t sustain equal interest.

Warner Bros.’ November 3 release brings the film to 4K UHD with HDR for the first time, alongside a new 4K digital edition. Standard packaging, a SteelBook, and a Walmart-exclusive collector’s edition are announced. The supplied release information lists a 233-minute runtime. These details describe the forthcoming edition, not an assessment of its transfer or audio presentation.

Three new supplements address the film’s continuing influence, the restoration process, and Leigh’s portrayal of Scarlett. GONE WITH THE WIND: RESTORING AND PRESERVING AN EPIC is particularly relevant to a release whose appeal depends so heavily on its visual history. Preserving the film and examining its legacy belong together. Its importance provides a reason to keep looking closely, including at the assumptions embedded in its most celebrated images.

I admire the ambition, the visual storytelling, and Leigh’s refusal to make Scarlett comfortable company. I’m less convinced by the extended romantic repetition, and the film’s sentimental treatment of the slaveholding South remains a serious limitation. Scarlett survives by recognizing when the world has changed and adjusting her behavior accordingly. The film around her has a much harder time letting go of the world she leaves behind.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
