Some seem credible, others are hard to reconcile, and the person responsible for sorting it all out has to decide whose information deserves attention. Aisling Byrne takes that familiar dilemma and approaches it from an unusual perspective in MARY IS MISSING, a dark and comic Irish psychological thriller that gradually makes the reliability of its witnesses considerably more interesting than the simplicity of its central mystery. The film has an appealing unpredictability, even when its enthusiasm for the unusual occasionally outpaces its ability to bring everything together.

The disappearance of care worker Mary from the Yellow Tree Day Service brings Garda Foley (Lloyd Cooney) into a world where the people who last saw her seem to have very different versions of what happened. Peter O'Hara (Mark Smith) and the other attendees become essential to the investigation, but their accounts introduce complications rather than providing the straightforward facts Foley needs. The increasingly contradictory testimony creates an unusual investigative situation, leaving him to decide whether someone is deliberately withholding information, misunderstanding the events, or trying to protect someone else.

The setup is interesting because it challenges our expectations of credibility. Most crime stories establish a detective as the authority who separates testimony from misleading information. Byrne complicates that dynamic by placing individuals whose voices are too often questioned or dismissed at the heart of the investigation, challenging audiences to confront how easily their own assumptions determine who they believe, who they doubt, and whose perspective they consider worth hearing. The film recognizes that being heard and being believed are two different experiences, particularly for people whose perspectives are frequently overlooked.

The screenplay, co-written by Byrne and Caitríona Daly, also welcomes absurdity. The investigation doesn't unfold with the procedural precision audiences might expect from a conventional mystery; instead, the witnesses' personalities and increasingly unusual contributions shape the film's direction. Its humor can be wonderfully uncomfortable, especially as the situation begins to test Foley's ability to maintain control. These interactions give the story a distinctive personality that keeps it from resembling another missing-person investigation.

Cooney serves as an effective counterpart to the ensemble. Garda Foley provides the procedural framework against which the various accounts are measured, approaching an increasingly confusing situation with seriousness. The performance is particularly effective when the detective's expectations meet testimony that doesn't match what he's looking for. Rather than letting the character become an exaggerated authority figure, Cooney gives him enough composure to make the more unusual exchanges entertaining.

Mark Smith also deserves praise as Peter, contributing to an ensemble whose individual personalities help distinguish the various perspectives surrounding Mary's disappearance. Derek McSweeney, Wesley Fairbrother, Keith Foley, Jackie O'Hagan, Neil Coffey, and the others bring valuable individuality to the production. This isn't a conventional film where an established screenplay was handed to a cast assembled afterward. The people appearing on screen were instrumental in determining the story being told.

MARY IS MISSING was developed through a twelve-week writers' room organized by Run of the Mill, an Irish arts organization founded by Byrne that champions artists whose talents and perspectives have too often been unnoticed. Thirteen of the film's nineteen cast members actively helped shape its characters, themes, and direction. Their contributions give the production a creative foundation that extends beyond the familiar industry practice of discussing representation without meaningfully involving the people being represented. Rather than simply appearing in someone else's vision, these performers helped bring the story to life.

The ensemble isn't simply there to support a story conceived by someone else; its members helped determine the kind of film they wanted to create. Their shared interest in crime procedurals, dramatic television, and mystery storytelling shaped the project's direction, giving these performers a chance to explore a genre where their talents have rarely received the same consideration as others. It's an important achievement, especially when the resulting production has the confidence to be strange, funny, and occasionally uncomfortable, rather than reducing its characters to inspirational figures or treating their participation as extraordinary simply because they were given the opportunity.

I appreciate that Byrne doesn't try to make every character likable. The witnesses have their own personalities, motivations, and relationships, and their behavior isn't always especially helpful to the investigation. That freedom allows the ensemble to participate in the complicated depth of genre storytelling instead of being restricted to managed portrayals designed to reassure audiences. They can be frustrating, contradictory, entertaining, and hard to understand, just like characters in any other mystery.

And that's part of the enjoyment here. Nobody feels obligated to behave according to audience expectations, and the performers clearly embrace the chance to explore their characters' less agreeable qualities. Their willingness to make things messy gives the film a lot of the humor and unpredictability that makes it so enjoyable.

Dan Keane's cinematography and editing contribute to the film's unsettled atmosphere, helping maintain an appropriate sense of uncertainty as the investigation develops. The contained environment is particularly effective because the disappearance disrupts a familiar setting, routines, and relationships. Byrne uses that to her advantage, turning an ordinary workplace into a place where the audience can’t confidently interpret what they're being told.

Much of what makes MARY IS MISSING possible comes from the people behind it, both in front of and behind the camera. Co-written by Aisling Byrne and Caitríona Daly, and directed by Byrne, the film brings together Mark Smith, Derek McSweeney, Eoghan Ashe, Ella-Jane Moore, Jackie O’Hagan, John Egan, Keith Foley, Maurice Coll, Neil Coffey, Teresa Flood, Wesley Fairbrother, Lucy Smith, and Conor Begley, alongside Lloyd Cooney, Lauren Larkin, Craig Connolly, Danny O’Connor, Clare Monnelly, and Kamilla Fenger. Producer Killian Coyle and the team at Arcade Film helped bring that collective vision to the screen, with Dan Keane on cinematography and editing, Michael Fleming on music, Ebun Oladeru on production design, and Saileóg O’Halloran on costume design. It's worth recognizing everyone involved, particularly because this production demonstrates what can happen when performers are given genuine creative ownership rather than simply being asked to interpret someone else's ideas.

MARY IS MISSING succeeds most when it allows its characters to participate in the investigation on their own terms, challenging the assumptions of both its detective and its audience. Its collaborative development is admirable, but the finished production deserves to be discussed as entertainment, with its unusual humor and performances. Byrne has created a mystery with a talented ensemble and a storytelling approach that deserves wider recognition. I'd love to see more productions embrace this level of creative participation, not because it automatically makes a film successful, but because giving different artists the chance to tell the stories they want to tell can produce something audiences haven't seen before.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
