RAVING REVIEW: <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>Making Lestat de Lioncourt a rockstar might be one of the most intriguing decisions made in Anne Rice's universe. After two seasons of hearing everyone else's take on his existence, the temperamental vampire finally gets to tell his own story. Naturally, a conversation wouldn't be nearly theatrical enough for him. ANNE RICE'S THE VAMPIRE LESTAT trades the intimate gothic atmosphere for an extravagant combination of rock music, excess, unresolved trauma, and some questionable personal decisions. The third season is entertaining, sometimes frustrating, and certainly unlike anything the series has seen before.<\/p>\n

\n

Sam Reid has been one of the true strengths of this series since INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE premiered in 2022, and handing him the spotlight feels like a natural progression. After Daniel Molloy's (Eric Bogosian) bestselling account of Louis de Pointe du Lac's (Jacob Anderson) experiences is published, Lestat decides it's time to challenge the narrative surrounding his life. He forms a glam-rock band, records an album, and takes his personality on tour. The idea of Lestat responding to an unfavorable book by becoming a rock star makes almost too much sense.<\/p>\n

The music is among the season's most ambitious creative decisions, and composer Daniel Hart deserves credit for developing songs that belong to Lestat rather than just throwing in something that goes along with his story. Hart's involvement extended into the writers' room, letting the music influence the narrative rather than serve as an afterthought. Songs such as "Long Face," "The Loneliness," and "Stained Glass Eyes" demonstrate the range of this approach, moving between excessive self-promotion and considerably more vulnerable emotion. Reid commits to the material, giving Lestat the confidence of someone who believes an audience should consider itself fortunate simply to be in his presence.<\/p>\n

The previous seasons worked so well because their elaborate presentation never overshadowed the relationships driving the narrative. This time, the production occasionally seems so excited about its reinvention that the surrounding story struggles to get the same attention. Individual scenes are impressive, and the band's identity is convincing, but the cumulative effect isn't always as satisfying as its ambition. I enjoyed the experimentation, though I occasionally wished the series would spend less time celebrating its new direction and more time examining its consequences.<\/p>\n

Lestat's past shapes a lot of the season, especially as his experiences over more than two centuries begin to influence his present-day behavior. His relationship with his mother, Gabriella, played by Jennifer Ehle, introduces another dimension of complication to a character whose understanding of love has never been “healthy”. Rather than presenting his history as an explanation for everything he's done, these explorations offer insight into the experiences that contributed to his personality. Ehle is particularly effective at establishing the difficult emotional connection between parent and child without making their relationship feel conventional.<\/p>\n

Jacob Anderson is equally important to the series, even as Lestat assumes storytelling responsibilities. Louis and Lestat have always been compelling because their connection contains affection, resentment, dependency, and the expectation that they misunderstand each other. Their shared history continues to influence both characters, no matter how determined either appears to move beyond it. Anderson brings restraint to a production that otherwise seems delighted to turn practically everything up to eleven. His presence also reminds us how much the first two seasons accomplished through carefully developed conversations and complicated emotional performances.<\/p>\n

Eric Bogosian's Daniel Molloy also connects to the show's earlier days. His cynical personality and willingness to challenge immortal creatures who could destroy him without much effort have made him one of its more enjoyable characters. Having them and others show up helps maintain continuity, though the expanding narrative sometimes leaves supporting characters competing for attention with Lestat's increasingly elaborate reinvention.<\/p>\n

For me, the season's weakness is how much it tries to cram into only seven episodes. Lestat's musical career, history, relationships, and the consequences of his growing influence each warrant more screen time. The mythology surrounding Akasha (Sheila Atim) further raises those expectations. The result is a collection of fascinating developments that don't always receive sufficient room to breathe. I wouldn't want less ambition, but I'd have welcomed a few more episodes to give the season the attention it deserves.<\/p>\n

The inconsistency in tone also becomes more noticeable as the season progresses. ANNE RICE'S THE VAMPIRE LESTAT embraces camp (a welcome addition), outrageousness, and a wicked sense of humor, all of which are more than appropriate for its main character. Its attempts to balance exaggerated spectacle with personal suffering aren't always successful. Some developments are genuinely affecting, while others feel like the series expects the audience's attachment to these characters to do more of the heavy lifting than the storytelling itself. Reid's performance compensates for those shortcomings, but even his talent can't resolve every structural issue.<\/p>\n

Acorn Media International's physical presentation gives fans another reason to revisit this chapter. The Blu-ray and DVD editions feature all seven episodes across three discs, plus more than five hours of bonus material. Among the supplements are episode-focused discussions, THE VAMPIRE LESTAT AFTER DARK, explorations of the music's development, lyric and karaoke videos, the 2025 Comic-Con panel, and highlights from THE VAMPIRE LESTAT: ONE NIGHT ONLY LIVE. The music-focused part is a welcome addition, given how extensively Hart's compositions shaped this season's identity.<\/p>\n

Looking at the larger picture, I appreciate AMC's willingness to let this franchise change its identity as it moves through Rice's novels. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE established an intense adaptation that was comfortable making substantial changes while retaining the relationships at the heart of its source material. THE VAMPIRE LESTAT continues that willingness to experiment, although I don't think everything lands as well as other changes. The forthcoming QUEEN OF THE DAMNED has more than enough to build upon (and is arguably my most anticipated chapter), and the introduction of more supernatural issues offers an intriguing opportunity to explore beyond the personal conflicts that have dominated the story so far.<\/p>\n

What keeps this season so engaging is Reid's understanding that Lestat can be ridiculous, cruel, seductive, insecure, and sympathetic without those characteristics canceling one another out. He makes the character's contradictions entertaining, especially when the personality conceals someone far less certain than he'd ever admit. The music gives him another outlet, and even when the writing overextends, the performance rarely loses its appeal.<\/p>\n

ANNE RICE'S THE VAMPIRE LESTAT doesn't quite match the consistency or emotional precision of the previous two seasons, but its willingness to attempt something so different deserves recognition. There's plenty to admire in its performances, musical production, elaborate design, and determination to embrace the extravagance of Rice's immortal characters. I just wish the storytelling had been given enough space to develop everything the creative team wanted to explore. Lestat finally has the stage entirely to himself, and while the concert isn't flawless, I'll certainly be returning for the next performance.<\/p>\n
