We grow up surrounded by stories, photographs, and memories that help us understand where we came from, rarely questioning whether someone might have been left out. For filmmaker Maria Munro, an unexpected discovery during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that she had a sister whose existence had remained largely unspoken for decades. Her directorial debut, SISTERS / HERMANAS, follows her journey from Vancouver back to her childhood home in Venezuela, where finding the truth meant revisiting relationships, confronting uncomfortable family history, and reaching out to someone she hadn't even known was missing from her life.

The circumstances surrounding Maria's discovery are unusual enough to sound like the beginning of a fictional story. While meditating during the pandemic, she feels persistently that she has another sister. With siblings already, she struggles to understand where this intuition comes from, but curiosity pushes her to ask questions. Those conversations eventually reveal her father's earlier relationship and a daughter named Cecilia, opening an entirely new chapter of family history Maria had spent most of her life unaware of.

I appreciated how naturally Munro approaches this revelation. She doesn't try to turn her investigation into an elaborate mystery or manufacture a dramatic confrontation with everyone who kept the information hidden. Her narration is intimate and conversational, almost like listening to someone share an extraordinary personal experience over coffee. She's understandably curious about the circumstances, but what comes through most strongly is her desire to know Cecilia. Understanding why her sister wasn't part of the family's story matters, but connecting with her matters even more.

That distinction becomes important as Maria revisits her upbringing in Venezuela in the late 1950s. Her family's history reflects a society where class, reputation, and expectations surrounding relationships could have enormous consequences, particularly when circumstances threatened the public image a family wanted to maintain. Cecilia's existence wasn't simply forgotten or overlooked. The decisions surrounding her place within the family were influenced by attitudes that allowed certain relationships to be acknowledged while others were kept outside the accepted narrative. Munro handles these discoveries with compassion without pretending those choices were harmless.

Her investigation also pushes her to reconsider her relationships with her siblings. Because they spent parts of their childhood at separate boarding schools, they didn't necessarily develop the closeness people might expect from growing up in the same household. Maria's longing for a stronger family connection adds another layer to her determination to find Cecilia. She's not searching merely to complete a family tree; she hopes to build a relationship neither woman had the chance to experience growing up.

The documentary makes lovely use of archival photographs, family recordings, illustrations, animation, and contemporary footage from Venezuela to bring Maria's memories to life. I found the older photographs particularly meaningful because they represent a family history she spent decades believing she understood. As more information emerges, those familiar images take on new significance. It's a thoughtful way to present the past, prompting us to consider how much can exist beyond the memories preserved in a family album.

Julia Hostetler's editing deserves recognition for bringing together the various materials without making the documentary feel crowded. She also contributes illustrations, complemented by Dylan Moore's original animation, which provide a charming visual approach to memories and conversations that couldn't have been captured on camera. Rather than relying on a continuous series of interviews, these elements give Maria's recollections room to develop while maintaining the personal quality of her storytelling. The different artistic approaches fit together beautifully, helping a documentary spanning decades of family history remain approachable within its brief runtime.

Ross Munro, Maria's husband and longtime filmmaking collaborator, co-wrote and produced the film while also contributing cinematography and original music. The two previously worked together on BROKEN PALACE, EUROPEAN TOUR '73, and THE MOVIEGOER, although SISTERS marks Maria's first time directing. It's a fitting project for that milestone, allowing her to take ownership of a story that couldn't be separated from her own experiences. Her voice guides the documentary, and the filmmakers' familiarity gives the production an affectionate quality without making it feel overly sentimental.

The music is equally well considered, including an original closing song featuring Angie Nguyen on vocals and piano, with Gregorio Gomez contributing sound design. These elements complement the documentary's emotional developments without constantly telling us how we're supposed to feel. Maria's story already carries enough weight through her narration, the family photographs, and the discoveries themselves. The filmmakers know when to let those moments speak for themselves.

Returning to Venezuela gives the documentary an additional personal connection beyond Maria's search for Cecilia. Contemporary images of Caracas and Maracay appear alongside older photographs, bringing together the country she remembers and the places that continued changing after she established her life in Canada. Revisiting her childhood surroundings lets her reconnect with a part of her history, though she now understands it differently. I enjoyed how the documentary incorporates those locations without losing sight of the relationship that brought her back in the first place.

At only 24 minutes, SISTERS covers impressive personal ground, though I would've welcomed more time exploring the circumstances surrounding Cecilia's upbringing. The family's history offers enough material for a longer documentary, especially given how social expectations shaped the lives of those involved. Munro's decision to focus on her own investigation keeps the story personal rather than turning it into an exhaustive account of every family relationship. Her interest has always been in understanding the sister she never knew, and the documentary maintains that focus.

Another quality I appreciated was Munro's willingness to acknowledge the complicated decisions previous generations made without reducing her relatives to villains. Families are rarely as straightforward as the stories we tell about them, and understanding the circumstances surrounding a decision doesn't mean excusing the harm it caused. Maria approaches these revelations with curiosity, affection, and an understandable need for answers. That consideration makes her journey feel sincere, especially as she begins to develop her own understanding of what family means beyond the expectations she inherited.

After premiering at the 2025 Doctober Film Festival, SISTERS continued reaching audiences through additional festival appearances, including the Victoria Film Festival and the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival. It's encouraging to see Munro's directorial debut receiving attention, particularly when its appeal comes from something so personal. Not everyone will recognize themselves in her extraordinary circumstances. It's easier to relate to the desire to understand our families, reconnect with someone, or revisit something we were never told.

What stayed with me was Maria's determination to reach out, rather than letting another generation of silence dictate her relationship with Cecilia. She can't change their childhood circumstances or recover the decades they spent apart, but she can decide what happens after she learns the truth. SISTERS / HERMANAS is a beautifully assembled, affectionate documentary about a woman who discovers an unexpected part of her family and chooses to embrace it. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do with a family story is refuse to let someone remain missing from it.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
