RAVING REVIEW: Getting betrayed by your friends is bad enough, but having them attempt to murder you is probably grounds for ending the relationship… MY GIFT LVL 9999 UNLIMITED GACHA: BACKSTABBED IN A BACKWATER DUNGEON, I'M OUT FOR REVENGE! isn't interested in pretending that the insanity isn’t at the level it is. This twelve-episode anime takes a fantasy setup about an underestimated protagonist discovering an extraordinary ability and turns it into an unapologetic revenge story filled with warriors, schemes, enemies, and wonderfully excessive demonstrations of how badly people can underestimate someone. It doesn't reinvent anime, but sometimes watching a group of unpleasant individuals realize they've made a huge mistake is entertaining enough.

The story takes place in a world with humans at the bottom of a deeply discriminatory social hierarchy. Light, a young human hoping to become a successful adventurer, has an ability called Unlimited Gacha that lets him summon items and other resources through a randomized card system. Unfortunately, his apparent inability to produce anything worthwhile makes him an easy target. Things improve when he's recruited into the Concord of the Tribes, a group established to represent the different groups and challenge the discrimination that separates them.

That all falls apart when his companions betray him and leave him to die in the Abyss, an enormous dungeon filled with unimaginable dangers. Facing what seems like certain death, Light discovers his “worthless” ability is far more powerful than anyone realized. The arrival of Mei, an extraordinarily capable Level 9999 warrior maid, is the first sign that his former companions may have miscalculated. Light won't simply survive their betrayal. He'll make sure they regret it.

The premise isn't subtle about where things are heading, and I appreciate that. We're not just watching an adventurer accept responsibility for saving the world after discovering some ancient prophecy. Light has been treated like trash, nearly murdered by people he trusted, and given access to an absurd amount of power. He responds by building an underground kingdom populated by powerful allies and preparing his revenge. At least the title isn't misleading!

The adaptation leans into the satisfaction of watching someone dismissed as useless gain enough power to turn the tables on everyone. Director Katsushi Sakurabi understands that, and the series wastes little energy trying to convince audiences that Light's enemies deserve chances to redeem themselves. The people responsible for this are hardly misunderstood individuals who made an unfortunate decision. Their behavior reflects the same prejudices and cruelty that have shaped the world around them.

Light's transformation also introduces an entertaining change in personality. The inexperienced target, who originally wanted little more than acceptance, gradually becomes someone capable of commanding extraordinary resources, organizing complex operations, and confronting people who once considered him beneath them. His innocence doesn't just disappear, but a noticeable change emerges between the person who trusted the Concord and the one preparing to dismantle everything his former companions believed they could get away with. While writing this, I realize how universal this story is, and I compare it to something like Stephen King’s CARRIE.

Nina Tamaki voices Light in the original Japanese presentation, with Shannon Emerick handling the English dub. Both performances have the challenge of presenting a protagonist whose circumstances shift dramatically from vulnerability to strength. An excessively powerful lead can get boring when every confrontation is a foregone conclusion, but Light's motivation gives his expanding abilities enough direction to keep them entertaining. His enemies aren't simply obstacles on the path to another upgrade. They're people whose past actions give him a reason to pursue them. As I’ve mentioned before, anime is one of the few times I think dubbed versions are just as acceptable as the originals (not trying to gatekeep, but it is what it is)

The randomized card mechanic adds an element of fantasy gaming that fits within the world, even when the results make chance feel somewhat ridiculous. Once Level 9999 warriors start appearing, the average opponent will need far more than a motivational speech to survive.

Mei, voiced by Ikumi Hasegawa in Japanese and Molly Searcy in English, becomes an important presence almost immediately. Her loyalty to Light is absolute, and her abilities highlight the enormous gap between his current understanding and the existence he once endured. She's also an entertaining character in her own right, combining the outward presentation with the capabilities of someone you would prefer not antagonize.

As Light's kingdom expands, additional characters such as Nazuna, Aoyuki, Ellie, Nemumu, and Gold bring different personalities and fighting styles into the story. Their contrasting abilities let the series move beyond demonstrations of strength, especially when Light's operations require planning rather than simply sending the strongest available warrior into battle. The growing ensemble also gives the Abyss a personality beyond its original reputation as an impossibly dangerous dungeon.

Of course, the assortment of overwhelmingly powerful female characters comes with familiar anime expectations, including exaggerated devotion, some over-the-top designs, and occasional fan service. Some viewers will undoubtedly find those elements more entertaining than others. They don't make the production worse, but the supporting cast is considerably more enjoyable when its members contribute more than repeatedly reminding everyone how wonderful Light is. Thankfully, their different personalities and abilities provide enough variety to keep the group from feeling interchangeable.

Humanity's position within the hierarchy exposes a world where discrimination is normalized, and the treatment of supposedly inferior individuals can become downright horrific. Light's experiences aren't presented as an isolated example of a few unpleasant people behaving badly. They're part of a much larger social structure that has allowed those prejudices to develop into accepted behavior.

One area where the writing occasionally lags is in its treatment of Light's opponents. The series makes it clear that these individuals are cruel, arrogant, and deserving of consequences, sometimes pushing their behavior so far that they become little more than targets. That works when the objective is uncomplicated revenge entertainment, but it can reduce the drama. A more varied collection of adversaries would add challenges without forcing the series to soften its stance on their actions.

Its twelve-episode structure lets the season establish Light's world, introduce his growing group of allies, and develop several conflicts without pretending every problem in this fantasy world can be resolved easily. I appreciate that the show recognizes revenge as something its protagonist intends to pursue methodically rather than an excuse to rush through a succession of disconnected battles. The preparation and planning also distinguish Light from another hero whose only meaningful contribution is being numerically stronger than everyone else.

Ryo Takahashi's musical score accompanies the production's combination of dark fantasy, adventure, and action, supporting a story that frequently shifts between the comparatively comfortable surroundings of Light's underground kingdom and the far uglier circumstances existing beyond it. Those contrasting environments are an interesting part of the show's identity. The place originally intended to become his tomb gradually represents something entirely different, while the supposedly civilized world above remains filled with people whose behavior makes the creatures associated with dangerous dungeons seem comparatively reasonable.

For collectors, Acorn Media International is releasing the complete first season on Blu-ray in the UK on October 26, 2026. The two-disc set includes all twelve episodes and runs about 360 minutes. It offers both the original Japanese-language presentation with English subtitles and an English-dubbed version. Its announced special features include clean opening and closing animations.

MY GIFT LVL 9999 UNLIMITED GACHA knows exactly what kind of entertainment it's offering, and that confidence works in its favor. Its characters can be exaggerated, its fantasy conventions feel familiar, and its commitment to making Light's enemies thoroughly unpleasant occasionally leaves little room for ambiguity. The mix of warriors, confrontations, and an unapologetic approach to revenge gives plenty to appreciate throughout the season.

I wouldn't approach this expecting a revolutionary examination of vengeance or an unusually complicated fantasy narrative. It's a story about a kid who was treated like garbage, discovered that his useless ability was ridiculously powerful, and decided his former friends deserved a demonstration of their mistake. Sometimes that's enough. After all, being betrayed by your friends is unfortunate, but discovering you can summon an army of Level 9999 warriors from the person you abandoned? That's an entirely different category of bad decision.
