Thankfully, he hasn't developed much interest in becoming a responsible adult, because watching him drag his family through increasingly ridiculous scientific disasters is still a hell of a lot of fun. Adult Swim's ninth season delivers another ten episodes of interdimensional nonsense, elaborate science-fiction concepts, uncomfortable family relationships, and jokes that probably shouldn't be repeated in polite company. It's familiar territory, but the creative team continues finding entertaining ways to make the Smith family's existence considerably more complicated than anyone else's.

Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden return as Rick and Morty, respectively, alongside Sarah Chalke as Beth, Chris Parnell as Jerry, and Spencer Grammer as Summer. By now, the transition to the new lead voices has become part of the show's established identity rather than something that demands constant comparison to its earlier seasons. Cardoni and Belden have settled into their characters, preserving their recognizable personalities while letting the performances serve the writing without drawing attention away from it.

That's important for a series whose characters are so heavily defined by their vocal delivery. Rick's arrogance, dismissive attitude, and occasional flashes of emotional vulnerability depend on the performance finding the distinction between being a complete asshole and someone who's spent a considerable amount of time making himself miserable. Morty, meanwhile, continues developing beyond the perpetually anxious kid who once existed primarily to question his grandfather's terrible decisions. Their familiar relationship remains entertaining, but the show benefits from recognizing that neither character needs to remain permanently frozen in his original form.

Season nine opens with THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MORTY, bringing Evil Morty back into the picture as Rick and Morty encounter a multiversal threat known as the Collective. It's an appropriately ambitious beginning, drawing upon the larger mythology without requiring the entire season to become another extended exercise in explaining alternate realities and their increasingly complicated inhabitants. The series has accumulated enough history that returning characters can carry considerable significance, though its willingness to make that history ridiculous remains essential to its appeal.

RICK'S DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS offers an interesting shift in perspective by examining Rick's relationship with his identity. The episode introduces his annual escape to a less technologically advanced planet, where he wipes his memories and lives as Ted. It's a wonderfully appropriate premise for someone with practically unlimited scientific capabilities who still can't find a conventional way to relax. Even taking a vacation requires Rick to manipulate his brain, because simply going somewhere pleasant and having a drink would apparently be too reasonable.

That mixture of elaborate science-fiction storytelling and painfully recognizable human behavior has always been one of the show's strengths. Rick can travel between dimensions, modify his body, and accomplish things that could fundamentally alter civilization, yet he's still burdened by problems no amount of technological advancement can fully eliminate. His intelligence provides endless conveniences and opportunities, but it also lets him complicate situations most people would simply accept and move past.

The season's more outrageous standalone adventures continue to embrace the creative freedom that comes with a universe where practically anything is possible. RICK FU HUSTLE, A RICKER RUNS THROUGH IT, and ERICKERHEAD each demonstrate the production's willingness to build entire stories around concepts that would sound completely ridiculous outside this particular series. Of course, after nine seasons, ridiculousness alone isn't enough. The most entertaining episodes understand how to develop their initial premise into something increasingly absurd without making the experience feel like a collection of unrelated jokes.

That distinction becomes important because the show's creativity can occasionally work against it. Some adventures become so invested in their elaborate concepts that the character interactions feel secondary to explaining whatever bizarre situation the writers have invented. It's not an overwhelming problem this season, but at times the show seems more interested in showing how complicated it can make an idea than letting its characters have fun with it.

Fortunately, the strongest material remembers that the Smith family is every bit as important as the science-fiction nonsense surrounding them. Chris Parnell keeps Jerry an entertaining source of frustration, especially because his insecurity contrasts wonderfully with Rick's arrogance. Jerry doesn't need extraordinary abilities to make terrible decisions, and his attempts to maintain some dignity in a household that rarely respects him remain consistently amusing.

Beth and Summer also get chances to exist beyond their customary supporting roles. SALUTE YOUR MORTS separates the family into different adventures, sending Morty and Summer to camp while Beth and Jerry have the house to themselves. It's an entertaining arrangement because these characters have developed relationships that don't depend entirely on Rick's involvement. After years of watching the family endure his influence, letting different combinations of characters create their own disasters feels entirely appropriate.

Spencer Grammer's Summer has become an increasingly valuable part of the ensemble. Her ability to approach the family's absurd circumstances with confidence, sarcasm, and occasional enthusiasm gives her a personality that contrasts nicely with Morty's more recognizable anxieties. She's no longer simply the older sibling who occasionally gets dragged into an adventure, and the writers have enough history with the character to understand how effectively she can contribute to the show's comedy.

MORTGULLY: THE LAST RICKFOREST is another standout, taking Rick and Morty to an alien planet in pursuit of valuable tree sap before their circumstances become considerably stranger. Its premise of forced devolution gives the animators room to experiment with transformations and biological absurdity while keeping the show's affection for taking a relatively simple concept to ridiculous extremes. It's exactly the kind of adventure that demonstrates why animation remains such a valuable medium for science-fiction comedy. The writers face practically no restrictions on what they can imagine, as long as the production can figure out how to draw it.

Visually, the ninth season continues delivering the colorful alien environments, bizarre creatures, elaborate technology, and occasional bodily unpleasantness audiences have come to expect. The animation's familiar character designs remain consistent, but the constantly changing locations offer plenty of variety. The show's visual identity has always benefited from treating the multiverse as an excuse to introduce increasingly strange possibilities rather than limiting itself to a few recognizable environments.

Its humor remains wonderfully inappropriate, too. RICK AND MORTY has never been interested in behaving itself, and the creative team continues combining intellectual science-fiction references with jokes that would probably get someone removed from a family gathering. That contrast is fundamental to the show's personality. It can build an elaborate premise around identity, existence, or technological advancement, then immediately undercut the intellectual exercise with something spectacularly stupid.

The writing also benefits from letting certain emotional developments exist without turning the series into a completely different production. Previous seasons have explored Rick's complicated past, his relationships with alternate versions of familiar characters, and the consequences of his actions. Those experiences remain part of the larger narrative, but season nine doesn't require every new adventure to serve as another extended examination of his trauma. Sometimes Rick is simply an irresponsible genius doing something idiotic because he can, and that's perfectly acceptable.

That freedom to alternate between serialized storytelling and standalone comedy helps prevent the show from becoming a prisoner of its own mythology. Longtime viewers have plenty of accumulated history to appreciate, while individual episodes can still introduce bizarre concepts without demanding a detailed understanding of every previous development. Balancing those competing interests isn't always effortless, particularly when a production has spent more than a decade building its fictional universe, but the ninth season generally handles the distinction well.

RICKUIEM MORT A DREAM and the concluding FIELD OF DREAMS help demonstrate the variety within the season's later episodes, moving between different approaches to science-fiction storytelling without making the entire run feel like preparation for a single enormous event. The finale fits the production's ambitions, reminding audiences that the series can still find interesting directions within a concept that has already supported an extraordinary assortment of adventures.

Not every episode reaches the same creative heights, and some concepts work better in theory than in practice. The overall consistency is encouraging for a show that could easily have settled into repeating its greatest hits. Nine seasons is an impressive run for any television comedy, let alone one whose premise requires the writers to continually develop new worlds, unusual technologies, and increasingly disturbing ways for a family to spend time together.

The continued involvement of co-creator Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder provides creative continuity. At the same time, the established ensemble voice helps maintain the personalities inseparable from the show's success. The series doesn't need to reinvent itself completely every year. Its strongest episodes recognize which elements deserve preservation while finding fresh opportunities to push the characters into unfamiliar circumstances.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment brings the complete ninth season to Blu-ray and DVD on November 3, 2026, collecting all ten episodes alongside additional bonus content, including material exclusive to the physical-media editions. English audio and English SDH subtitles are included, while the release retains the show's TV-MA classification. The complete collection is a welcome option for viewers who prefer owning their entertainment rather than relying exclusively on the changing availability of streaming services.

The physical edition also offers a convenient way to revisit the season's more elaborate adventures, especially episodes whose science-fiction concepts reward a second viewing. RICK AND MORTY frequently moves through unusual settings, quick visual jokes, and absurd background details without slowing down to ensure audiences catch everything. Having the episodes available together makes revisiting those details easier, and the promised exclusive supplementary material gives collectors another incentive.

I appreciate Warner Bros. continuing to support physical releases for adult animation, especially as streaming has become the primary way to watch so much contemporary television. A show with this kind of established following deserves editions that let audiences build a permanent collection. The ninth season fits comfortably alongside its predecessors, offering another ten installments of creative insanity from a production that still seems perfectly happy making its own existence as complicated as possible.

RICK AND MORTY hasn't suddenly become a responsible, emotionally healthy family comedy, and thank God for that. Its characters keep making terrible decisions, the universe stays full of things nobody should ever encounter, and Rick still has enough intelligence to recognize practically every problem except the ones he creates himself. The ninth season demonstrates that the show can embrace its increasingly elaborate history without sacrificing the ridiculous entertainment that made it successful in the first place.

After more than a decade, the Smith family remains a collection of deeply dysfunctional individuals whose problems have the unfortunate habit of threatening entire civilizations. Most families argue over dinner, household responsibilities, or someone forgetting an important birthday. These idiots have access to portal technology, alternate dimensions, and a grandfather whose definition of quality time frequently involves a substantial risk of death. Somehow, they're still one of television's most entertaining families.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
