Every lantern raised outside a woman's quarters in RAISE THE RED LANTERN represents another victory in a competition nobody should have been forced into. Zhang Yimou's extraordinary drama is one of those films where nearly every image deserves your full attention, but the beauty becomes increasingly uncomfortable once you understand what you're looking at. Set in 1920s China, the film follows four women whose lives are dictated by one man's preferences, turning marriage into an elaborate system of control, humiliation, and calculated inhumanity. I've always held this film in extraordinarily high regard, and revisiting it through this new 4K presentation only reinforces why. Thirty-five years later, its examination of institutionalized misogyny, the illusion of privilege, and the damage inflicted when people are forced to compete for basic dignity remains devastating.

Gong Li plays Songlian, a nineteen-year-old student whose education ends abruptly after her father's death and her family's financial collapse. With few alternatives, she becomes the fourth wife of Master Chen (Ma Jingwu), an older, wealthy man whose estate runs on traditions that seem uninterested in anyone's happiness other than his own. Songlian is educated and brilliant, with enough independence to recognize the horrid situation she’s in, but understanding an unjust system doesn't automatically give her the means to escape it.

The household follows a strict ritual. Master Chen chooses which wife will receive his attention, and servants raise red lanterns outside her quarters to show everyone his decision. The woman receives additional privileges, including a special foot massage, while the others are expected to accept their temporary irrelevance. Each evening becomes another declaration of which woman currently holds his favor, turning something as personal as intimacy into a contest overseen by the entire household.

It's a horrifying arrangement because everyone treats it as normal. The servants know their responsibilities, the wives understand the expectations, and generations of tradition explain practices that exist solely to maintain a power imbalance. Nobody needs to remind Songlian that her position depends on another person's approval. The lanterns do that every single night.

Gong Li is exceptional in a role that demands an increasingly complex mix of confidence, frustration, jealousy, and emotional exhaustion. Songlian approaches her new surroundings with the resistance of someone who hasn't surrendered her individuality, and Li makes those interactions fascinating. Her character isn't some passive young woman waiting for audiences to sympathize with her. She's proud and can recognize manipulation even when she isn't prepared to deal with it.

That personality becomes essential as Songlian grows closer to the other women. The first wife, Yuru (Jin Shuyuan), holds an established position within the family. In contrast, the second wife, Zhuoyan (Cao Cuifen), is friendly, but that doesn't necessarily make her intentions any easier to understand. The third wife, Meishan (He Saifei), is a former opera singer whose personality introduces another perspective on the household's suffocating expectations.

Their relationships drive a lot of the film's tension, and Zhang refuses to reduce the women to interchangeable rivals fighting over a man's affection. Each develops her own method of existing within an arrangement that denies her independence. Some value their appearances, others are more comfortable expressing their dissatisfaction, and all have learned that even a temporary advantage can change how they're treated.

Cao Cuifen and He Saifei, alongside Gong Li, bring personality to women whose experiences are shaped by the same oppression. Their interactions can be funny, uncomfortable, calculating, and sad, sometimes within the same breath. The performances prevent the household's conflicts from becoming an abstract argument about gender inequality. These are individuals making decisions within circumstances designed to limit their choices, and the film understands the difference between explaining someone's behavior and excusing it.

Kong Lin's Yan'er, a servant with her own aspirations, adds another twist to the story. The household's hierarchy doesn't just divide men from women or wives from servants. It encourages everyone to measure their worth against someone else's position, creating resentment that travels through every level of the estate. Even those without authority can find ways to exercise whatever little power they have over someone else.

What makes this so disturbing is how efficiently the women become participants in maintaining the very system responsible for their suffering. Their rivalries stem from an environment where affection, comfort, status, and consideration have been deliberately made scarce. The rules encourage competition because cooperation would threaten the arrangement that keeps everyone dependent.

Zhang Yimou, working with cinematographers Zhao Fei and Yang Lun, creates an almost claustrophobic world where the architecture's beauty becomes inseparable from its oppressive purpose. The enormous courtyards, carefully arranged interiors, imposing walls, and repeated patterns give the estate an almost overwhelming physical presence. Characters frequently appear small within their surroundings.

Color carries an equally important responsibility. The brilliant red lanterns immediately attract attention against the estate's muted architecture, but their warmth is deceptive. They represent less romance or affection than access to status. The contrast becomes increasingly uncomfortable as the film progresses, turning a beautiful image into an announcement of inequality. Zhang lets the environment reflect the passage of time without suggesting that time itself offers relief. The household continues operating according to its expectations, regardless of the damage accumulating among its residents.

Master Chen's presence is another creative decision that makes this film so memorable. Although his authority shapes nearly everything in the household, Zhang avoids making him the dominant visual figure. He's often distant, obscured, or shown in ways that keep his personality from overwhelming the larger system he represents. The women spend their lives responding to his decisions, but the film has little interest in treating him as an individual whose qualities justify their obsession. He doesn't need to be a “monster” for this setup to be monstrous. Wealth, gender, power, and tradition have already established his authority, allowing the surroundings to carry out cruelty on his behalf.

Zhao Jiping's score and the film's use of traditional Chinese opera further distinguish the film. Music becomes part of the household's identity, sometimes expressing personality and emotion that surroundings try to suppress. The sounds of daily rituals also grow in significance, reminding us how decisions made elsewhere have come to govern the women's existence.

I appreciate how thoroughly RAISE THE RED LANTERN rejects the idea that intelligence or personal determination protects someone from an abusive institution. Songlian recognizes the indignity of her circumstances, but she's still a young woman whose education, financial independence, and future have been taken away. Her situation becomes increasingly uncomfortable because the system doesn't require her to believe in its legitimacy. Its historical setting offers a specific examination of marriage and patriarchal traditions in 1920s China, but the mechanisms of control aren't limited to that period. Systems that encourage competition among disadvantaged people and present limited privileges as evidence of genuine opportunity remain painfully recognizable.

The film was an important international achievement for the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, winning the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Its reputation is well-deserved, though those accomplishments barely convey the experience of engaging with the material. Its visual style alone makes it unforgettable, but the performances and complexity give those extraordinary images lasting significance.

Film Movement Classics' 35th-anniversary theatrical rerelease is a welcome opportunity to experience that through a carefully documented restoration. The team undertook the work for the 26th Udine Far East Film Festival and completed it in 2024 at L'Immagine Ritrovata in Hong Kong and Bologna. The restoration used the original image and sound negatives under Zhang Yimou's supervision, with the surviving vintage positive print presented at Venice in 1991 serving as a reference for the original color presentation. Fingers crossed that this will make its way to a deserving 4K disc!

The original 1.85:1 presentation and Mandarin-language soundtrack are retained, with English subtitles. Returning this production to theaters beginning November 6 also gives audiences a chance to appreciate its compositions on a scale that matches the extraordinary care behind them. More importantly, it introduces another generation to a work that deserves to remain accessible rather than gradually becoming another important international title people discuss but struggle to experience properly. I just wish I lived in a bigger city that had a screening!

RAISE THE RED LANTERN is among those rare films whose brilliance and emotional substance are so closely connected that separating them would diminish both. Gong Li delivers an unforgettable performance, Zhang Yimou builds a world where every detail serves the story, and the screenplay examines a cruelty without denying the women trapped within it their own personalities.

It's beautiful, infuriating, psychologically exhausting, and truly compelling. That it remains such a powerful experience thirty-five years after its original release says so much about the extraordinary achievement of everyone involved, but also something far less comforting about how familiar its examination of control and inequality still feels.

I love this film, and its restoration is exactly the sort of project worth celebrating. The red lanterns are among the most recognizable images in international cinema, yet their brilliance never represented anything remotely comforting. Zhang gives us a world filled with beauty, then shows us exactly how much suffering lies behind those walls. Once you recognize what those lanterns actually mean, you'll never look at them the same way again.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
