That's the unusual starting point for RE-CREATION, a fictional examination of one of Ireland's most controversial murder investigations. Directors Jim Sheridan and David Merriman take the real-life killing of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier and construct an imaginary courtroom proceeding around the man long associated with her death. It's an interesting approach to a case that has generated countless headlines, documentaries, and accusations, though combining real evidence with fictional characters creates its own complications.

On December 23, 1996, Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found murdered outside her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland. British journalist Ian Bailey quickly became a suspect, and despite being arrested twice, he was never charged with her murder in Ireland. French authorities took a different approach, eventually convicting Bailey in absentia in 2019 and sentencing him to 25 years in prison. Ireland refused to extradite him, and Bailey maintained his innocence until his death in January 2024. Nearly thirty years after Sophie's murder, the circumstances surrounding her death continue to generate disagreement, while her family has spent decades seeking answers.

Rather than another conventional dramatization of the investigation, Sheridan and Merriman imagine what might have happened if Bailey had faced a jury in Ireland. Colm Meaney portrays Bailey, while Aidan Gillen appears as the prosecuting barrister presenting the case against him. Once the courtroom proceedings establish the accusations, the narrative moves into the jury's deliberations, where twelve strangers must decide whether the evidence proves Bailey's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Their discussions gradually reveal conflicting interpretations, personal prejudices, and serious questions about the investigation's reliability.

Anyone familiar with Sidney Lumet's 1957 classic 12 ANGRY MEN will recognize the inspiration immediately. The similarities extend well beyond putting twelve people together to argue about a verdict. Sheridan and Merriman borrow the familiar framework of an initial vote, a dissenting juror, and the gradual examination of evidence that others have accepted without sufficient scrutiny. There's nothing inherently wrong with borrowing such a successful premise, though it practically guarantees comparisons to a film that remains one of the finest courtroom dramas ever made.

RE-CREATION tries to distinguish itself through its historical material, which gives the jurors much more to discuss than an invented criminal case. The filmmakers aren't simply questioning whether one particular witness should be believed. They're examining the consequences of an investigation that became an international controversy, with competing legal systems reaching dramatically different conclusions about the same suspect. The differences between Irish and French proceedings also give the story an unusual dimension. A man who was never prosecuted for murder in the country where it occurred was nevertheless convicted in another country, creating questions that extend beyond an ordinary discussion of reasonable doubt.

Vicky Krieps plays Juror 8, whose reluctance to accept the apparent consensus establishes much of the film's dramatic momentum. Her performance is restrained, allowing the character's questions and observations to carry more weight than emotional declarations. Rather than turning every disagreement into a confrontation, Krieps communicates determination through her delivery and reactions to the other jurors. Her willingness to challenge assumptions becomes an important part of the discussions, even as the film sometimes relies too heavily on the familiar structure established by its inspiration.

Sheridan also places himself in front of the camera as Juror 1, giving him a prominent position in the proceedings. His involvement is interesting considering his personal history with the investigation. Before making RE-CREATION, Sheridan directed the documentary series MURDER AT THE COTTAGE: THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE FOR SOPHIE, and his continued research has informed his belief that Bailey was wrongly suspected. That perspective matters because RE-CREATION isn't simply a detached exercise in imagining an alternate legal outcome. Its creators have developed their own conclusions about the investigation, and those convictions inevitably influence how the evidence is presented.

This creates one of the film's more difficult problems. Fictional courtroom dramas can manipulate information to challenge an audience's assumptions because their cases exist entirely within the screenplay. RE-CREATION concerns an actual murder, actual investigators, and a real family that has lived with the consequences for decades. The jurors might be fictional, but the underlying tragedy isn't. When invented personal experiences begin influencing arguments about genuine evidence, the separation between historical examination and dramatic interpretation becomes less comfortable.

That's not necessarily a reason to dismiss the project. Films based on actual events routinely reconstruct conversations, combine characters, and explore circumstances that cannot be documented with absolute certainty. Sheridan and Merriman are relatively transparent about the fictional nature of their premise, and the film invites viewers to question how readily they accept information that supports an existing belief. It's important to distinguish between examining investigative failures and advocating a particular interpretation. Viewers unfamiliar with the case should recognize that these fictional jurors' arguments aren't equivalent to findings from an actual Irish criminal trial.

The production also introduces a broader discussion of how people form opinions long before they have enough information to justify them. Some jurors enter deliberations with strong convictions, while others are influenced by the personalities and arguments around them. Personal experiences shape their interpretations, sometimes revealing how difficult it is to separate an individual's background from the responsibility of evaluating evidence. The film is strongest when those disagreements expose the difference between believing someone is guilty and having the evidence to prove it.

John Connors and the supporting ensemble contribute to these exchanges, providing contrasting personalities and approaches to the material. With twelve jurors occupying much of the narrative, the screenplay doesn't always give everyone enough individuality to make their contributions equally memorable. Some participants matter more because of the roles they represent than because they develop into fully convincing characters. The personal revelations scattered throughout the deliberations can also feel engineered to advance the argument rather than emerging naturally from the discussion.

The limited setting places considerable responsibility on the dialogue, and RE-CREATION generally keeps the discussion moving across its 89-minute runtime. Rather than remaining confined to a single claustrophobic jury room, the filmmakers occasionally move the characters into other surroundings. These changes provide visual variety, although they also reduce some of the pressure that makes this kind of storytelling effective. The more opportunities the characters have to step away from their immediate surroundings, the less oppressive the responsibility of reaching a verdict can feel.

It's an interesting trade-off because the film's strongest material doesn't require much visual elaboration. The conflicting accounts, investigative questions, and disagreements about credibility already provide enough substance to carry the proceedings. When the conversation focuses on a specific piece of evidence and lets the characters challenge one another, the production becomes more engaging. When the dialogue turns toward broader personal statements or familiar courtroom-drama confrontations, the material occasionally feels less convincing.

Casting Colm Meaney as Bailey is another unusual choice. Given Bailey's importance to the production, his presence is surprisingly limited, with the fictional jurors doing most of the talking about him. This keeps attention on the evidence rather than making the accused the primary dramatic personality, though it also means viewers largely see Bailey through other characters' interpretations. Gillen's contribution as the prosecuting barrister helps establish the accusations before the deliberations take over, but neither performer dominates the picture as their prominent billing might suggest.

What complicates RE-CREATION further is the film's relationship with Sophie herself. Although her murder provides the entire foundation for the story, the narrative spends far more time examining the treatment of Bailey and the questions surrounding his suspected involvement. Investigative failures deserve scrutiny, and an accused person's legal rights shouldn't disappear because a crime is horrifying. At the same time, there's a difference between challenging an investigation and allowing the victim to become little more than the reason everyone else has assembled. Sophie's death remains the tragedy behind every argument, regardless of what conclusions the fictional jurors reach.

The actual case deserves that consideration. Sophie's family has publicly challenged the filmmakers' interpretation of the evidence, while Sheridan and Merriman have maintained their own position. Neither disagreement changes the fact that the film dramatizes an unresolved Irish investigation rather than definitively reconstructing what occurred. An audience can appreciate its arguments and still question the conclusions those arguments appear designed to encourage. In fact, maintaining that distinction is necessary when discussing a production dealing with people whose lives cannot be separated from the story.

RE-CREATION has an intriguing premise, capable performers, and enough substantive material to make its fictional deliberations worthwhile. Sheridan and Merriman clearly have strong feelings about the investigation, and their willingness to revisit it through an established dramatic framework produces an engaging, occasionally uncomfortable examination of how people interpret evidence. The execution isn't always as persuasive as the questions being raised, particularly when the fictional construction seems to steer the audience toward a preferred understanding of actual events.

The most useful thing about this imaginary trial isn't necessarily the verdict its participants are asked to consider. It reminds us that a convincing argument and a conclusive answer aren't always the same. Nearly thirty years after Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered, the debates surrounding her death continue, and RE-CREATION adds another perspective to an already complicated history. Whatever viewers make of Sheridan and Merriman's interpretation, their fictional jury cannot provide the real-world resolution Sophie and her family deserved.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
