The landscapes are gorgeous, the cities are enormous, the costumes are elaborate, and practically everything looks like it belongs in the theater. What's been harder for the series is making every storyline feel like it needed that presentation. Across its first two seasons, creators J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have delivered an ambitious expansion of J.R.R. Tolkien's world, with impressive performances, some outstanding sequences, some incredible storylines, and enough questionable storytelling decisions to make the experience considerably less consistent than you’d expect.

Set thousands of years before the events of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the series explores Middle-earth during its Second Age, when the apparent defeat of evil has created a fragile period of existence and peace. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) remains convinced that Sauron hasn't been eliminated, and her determination to find him puts her at odds with fellow Elves who believe it's time to move forward. Elsewhere, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) becomes involved in the growing relationship between the Elves and Dwarves. At the same time, mysterious developments among the Harfoots introduce another story that will eventually connect with the larger mythology.

Taking on Tolkien's stories is an enormous responsibility, particularly when Peter Jackson's adaptations have established such a recognizable interpretation of Middle-earth. The series doesn't have to duplicate those films to justify its existence, and trying to recreate them beat for beat would make the project far less interesting. The comparisons are unavoidable. Jackson demonstrated how enormous fantasy storytelling could remain grounded in characters audiences cared about, something THE RINGS OF POWER doesn't always manage despite having considerably more space to develop its relationships.

Morfydd Clark makes an interesting Galadriel, presenting a considerably different interpretation from Cate Blanchett's more composed portrayal in the films. This younger version is restless, determined, and often unwilling even to consider that her judgment might be wrong. Her obsession with locating Sauron gives the first season the real storyline. Her stubbornness can get frustrating when the screenplay keeps positioning her against nearly everyone offering an alternative perspective. Clark commits to the character, but Galadriel isn't always written in a way that makes spending time with her particularly enjoyable.

That becomes less of a problem once the series begins exploring the consequences of her decisions rather than just emphasizing her determination. The second season gives Clark more opportunities to portray someone confronting difficult questions about trust, responsibility, and the limits of her judgment. Galadriel remains a strong personality, but the circumstances allow for a more interesting performance than simply watching her insist she's right while everyone else disagrees.

Charlie Vickers is another performer whose contributions become considerably more interesting as the series develops. Without getting into the major twists surrounding his character, the second season lets Vickers explore a far more manipulative presence. His ability to shift between vulnerability and intimidation becomes one of the show's best parts. Rather than relying exclusively on armies and supernatural forces to establish a threat, these scenes demonstrate how dangerous someone can become by understanding what another person wants to hear.

His interactions with Celebrimbor, played by Charles Edwards, are among the strongest across both seasons. Edwards brings intelligence, ambition, and an increasing sense of vulnerability to the Elven smith, whose desire to accomplish something extraordinary creates its own obstacles. Their relationship gives the second season a more dramatic focus, with conversations whose consequences extend far beyond the characters. The tension comes from watching trust become increasingly difficult to justify, and both performers handle that exceptionally well.

The Elrond and Durin storyline is another area where the series succeeds by concentrating on relationships rather than overwhelming the audience with mythology. Robert Aramayo and Owain Arthur share terrific chemistry as Elrond and Prince Durin IV, whose friendship has been complicated by years of separation and responsibilities. Their conversations can be funny, affectionate, and even painful, without needing elaborate explanations of their histories. They're two friends trying to navigate circumstances that have become bigger than either anticipated.

Sophia Nomvete is equally enjoyable as Princess Disa, bringing warmth, confidence, and a welcome sense of humor to the Dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm. Her relationship with Durin adds a collaborative element amid the series' increasingly complicated political and supernatural conflicts. Peter Mullan also impresses as King Durin III, especially as the second season explores generational conflicts and the consequences of pursuing greater power. The Dwarven storylines make personal conflicts feel important even as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Khazad-dûm is one of the production's most impressive achievements. The enormous underground kingdom has a distinct identity, with architectural details and environments that make it feel like a functioning civilization rather than just a backdrop. The same attention extends to the Elven settlements, the Southlands, and the island kingdom of Númenor. Each location has its own characteristics that help establish the scale and diversity of Tolkien's world.

Cynthia Addai-Robinson brings authority to Queen Regent Míriel, while Lloyd Owen gives Elendil a sense of dignity that makes him easy to sympathize with. The problem is that the larger political conflicts can feel disconnected from the more engaging clashes elsewhere. The series offers compelling ideas about leadership, loyalty, public opinion, and the fear of losing influence. It occasionally spends so much time establishing factions that the characters become secondary to the arguments they're supposed to represent.

Trystan Gravelle's Pharazôn provides an effective antagonist, though the developments surrounding Númenor don't always get enough room to feel as convincing as they should. The series often moves on just as a storyline begins to gather momentum, then returns later with new issues that require another round of exposition. These interruptions become more frustrating when the audience has already become invested in another group of characters.

Markella Kavenagh brings plenty of enthusiasm to Nori Brandyfoot, whose curiosity and compassion lead her into circumstances far beyond her comfort zone. Daniel Weyman's mysterious Stranger is a fascinating companion, and their growing connection gives the series a gentler take on its themes of friendship and responsibility. The Harfoots' journey sometimes feels like it runs alongside the main story rather than contributing on its own. Their scenes can be charming, and the performers do a good job. The second season expands their adventures, yet the narrative doesn't always benefit from another separate cast competing for attention.

This is ultimately one of the biggest problems facing THE RINGS OF POWER. The creative team has assembled so many characters, kingdoms, conflicts, and mysteries that the series struggles to distribute its attention. An eight-episode season sounds substantial until you consider how many individual stories it needs to tell. Some characters disappear long enough that their eventual return requires a moment of adjustment. In contrast, others get extended scenes that contribute far less than the more focused arcs elsewhere.

Season two is a noticeable improvement, largely because the groundwork is already laid. With the major players introduced and several relationships in place, the writers can concentrate more directly on the growing danger facing Middle-earth. The manipulation surrounding the creation of the Rings becomes an effective source of tension. The escalating conflicts give the production opportunities to deliver the large-scale action audiences would expect from a series of this magnitude.

The Battle of Eregion stands out as one of the more impressive sequences, combining an enormous military confrontation with the consequences surrounding the characters caught at its center. The visual effects are impressive, but the sequence benefits just as much from the relationships developing around the conflict. That distinction matters because expensive effects alone aren't enough to make an action sequence memorable. The first two seasons have plenty of spectacular moments, yet what resonates most are those tied to characters whose circumstances become worth caring about.

The show's relationship with Tolkien's established history has generated considerable debate. The creative team has compressed timelines, introduced original characters, and taken liberties with ideas that longtime readers know better than casual viewers. Some of those changes make sense when adapting centuries of events into a television timeline, while others are harder to justify. The series doesn't need to function as an illustrated history lesson.

Seasons 1 and 2 on physical media are welcome news, especially given how heavily streaming services have dominated the distribution of expensive original television productions. Amazon MGM Studios and Alliance Home Entertainment will release both seasons in four-disc editions on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Amazon-exclusive limited-edition 4K SteelBook sets follow, featuring collectible artwork and art cards. My only concern is investing in two big sets without knowing whether the remaining seasons will receive the same treatment. Physical-media collectors know how frustrating that can be when a studio starts releasing a series and then stops halfway through (looking at you, STRANGER THINGS).

The releases also include behind-the-scenes bonus content, a welcome addition for a production whose design and filmmaking are major attractions. Exploring Middle-earth's construction, costumes, creatures, and large-scale action sequences should appeal to viewers interested in what it takes to create the series. Making these seasons available outside Prime Video is an important development for collectors who prefer owning their entertainment rather than relying on continued streaming availability.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER has plenty of room to grow, although its second season demonstrates that Payne and McKay are capable of moving the production in a stronger direction. Charlie Vickers, Charles Edwards, Robert Aramayo, and the actors who bring Khazad-dûm to life give the series wonderful, character-driven material. The enormous production values make its interpretation of Middle-earth an impressive place to revisit.

I don't need every trip to Middle-earth to match the experience of watching Peter Jackson's films, nor do I expect every adaptation to make the same decisions. I want characters worth following, conflicts worth investing in, and a reason to care when the armies begin marching. Across these first two seasons, THE RINGS OF POWER has demonstrated that it's capable of delivering those things. Amazon has certainly spent enough money building this version of Middle-earth. Now that the foundations are in place, the more interesting question is what the writers can do with everything they've created.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
