Lucy Weiss is a musician, a mother, and a wife who has moved with her family to the German countryside because her husband needs a fresh start. The new house isn't even fully settled when police arrive looking for his computers. What begins as a frightening interruption becomes something much harder to comprehend when Lucy learns that Philip is suspected of possessing child sexual abuse material. Writer and director Marie Kreutzer isn't telling a conventional mystery about catching a criminal. Her concern is what happens to the people who thought they knew him, particularly a woman who now has to reconsider her marriage while protecting their young son.

Lucy and Philip (Laurence Rupp) have an existing explanation for why their lives need to change. Philip, a filmmaker, has been struggling with burnout, and leaving the city is supposed to help him recover. Lucy is willing to reorganize the family's life around that need, even though she has a demanding creative career of her own. Their decision to relocate suggests a couple still trying to make their relationship work, rather than one already preparing to separate. That ordinary context matters. The police raid doesn't interrupt an obviously sinister household. It crashes into a recognizable family arrangement, where the people involved have made plans based on trust.

There's no comfortable way to imagine Lucy's situation. An accusation like this immediately raises questions about her son's safety, yet the person she would ordinarily turn to for reassurance is the one under investigation. She can't simply consult her memories and arrive at a definitive answer. The affectionate moments she remembers aren't automatically false, but they can't establish what Philip may have kept hidden. Kreutzer builds the central conflict around that terrible uncertainty. Lucy has to make practical decisions before she can fully process what she's heard, and there's no guarantee that the information she receives will make those decisions easier.

Seydoux is well suited to a character whose thoughts can't always be neatly translated into dialogue. Lucy doesn't have one emotion to work through before moving to the next. Love for her husband exists alongside horror at the allegations, and concern for her child makes any attempt to remain detached impossible. It's a demanding character because the audience may want certainty or immediate action long before Lucy is emotionally capable of providing either. The film's interest in her hesitation is more revealing than a version of the story in which she responds perfectly to every development. Seydoux gives that confusion a human center without turning Lucy into a spokesperson for a tidy argument.

The choice to focus on Lucy also limits how much access the film grants Philip. He is a substantial part of the family's life, and Laurence Rupp has to make that preexisting intimacy understandable. At the same time, GENTLE MONSTER doesn't need a lengthy psychological explanation for the allegations to have consequences. A detailed attempt to explain his behavior could easily shift attention away from those now forced to live with the suspicion. Kreutzer is more interested in the damage caused when someone's knowledge becomes unreliable. The person Lucy loves and the person investigators describe occupy the same place in her life, even when she cannot reconcile them.

Kreutzer's decision not to depict child sexual abuse is another important part of that perspective. She has explained that recreating abusive imagery was never an acceptable option for her, and the absence is consistent with Lucy's experience. Lucy hasn't witnessed the material or the alleged conduct herself. She is confronting information she can't make fit with the husband she remembers. The film doesn't need to show exploitation to communicate the seriousness of the accusations. In fact, focusing on her reaction makes the consequences difficult to dismiss as merely another disturbing plot device. Children harmed by abuse aren't abstract pieces of evidence, even when the story stays with a family confronting what may have happened.

Lucy's professional identity adds something beyond another responsibility competing for her attention. She isn't simply described as a pianist so that the film can insert elegant music between difficult conversations. Her work involves adapting songs into personal performances, often taking material originally sung by men and reconsidering what those words mean when she sings them. That approach becomes especially charged in a story about misplaced trust. The use of “Would I Lie to You?” has an obvious connection to the central situation, perhaps too obvious for some viewers, but the music also offers Lucy a part of her identity that doesn't begin and end with Philip. Her art belongs to her, even when events at home threaten to define everything else.

Composer Camille collaborated on the musical arrangements, and Seydoux prepared for the role through piano and vocal coaching. These details matter because Lucy's work isn't merely decorative background. The music lets Kreutzer consider the difference between an artist's public presentation and the private upheaval others can't necessarily see. It also contrasts with Lucy's mother, Eloise (Catherine Deneuve), whose approach to music and family life differs from her daughter's. These women understand the demands of artistic work, but that shared experience doesn't mean they agree on what Lucy should do next.

Deneuve's presence adds an important family relationship outside Lucy's marriage. Eloise has the advantage of some emotional distance from Philip, and she approaches her daughter's predicament more decisively. From her position, ending the relationship may seem like the only sensible response. Lucy doesn't have the luxury of switching off her attachment because a terrible accusation has entered the picture. Their disagreement isn't really about whether the alleged conduct would be unacceptable. It's about the painful gap between recognizing what a situation demands and following through on those decisions. The mother-daughter relationship makes space for frustration, even between people trying to protect one another.

The investigation introduces Elsa Kühn (Jella Haase), a police officer whose professional restraint contrasts with Lucy's emotional turmoil. Elsa has to deal with evidence and procedure, not provide personal reassurance to every family affected by a case. That distinction makes her an interesting counterpart to Lucy, who desperately wants information that might restore some sense of control. Kreutzer also follows Elsa away from work, developing a parallel situation involving her elderly father and his caregiver. The subplot examines what happens when someone responsible for identifying professional wrongdoing has to confront troubling conduct in her own household.

The connection between the two women is coherent, but it is also where the screenplay loses focus. Lucy's circumstances are sufficiently complicated to sustain the film without a second family crisis competing for attention. Elsa's personal story raises worthwhile questions about loyalty and the excuses people make for those close to them. Introducing those issues doesn't automatically mean they receive the same depth as Lucy's experience. The parallel can feel more deliberately constructed than naturally revealing, as though the film wants to underline an observation the central story has already made. It's one of the places where a more selective approach could have given the strongest material greater room.

The film's movement through different languages serves a clearer purpose. Lucy is French, Philip is Austrian, and their family lives in Germany. Conversations shift between French, German, and English, sometimes in moments when understanding exactly what's being said matters enormously. Language becomes another practical difficulty when Lucy is already struggling to interpret what is happening. Kreutzer hasn't introduced multilingualism simply to make the film appear cosmopolitan. These people live across linguistic boundaries, and navigating those boundaries becomes more demanding under pressure. The everyday inconvenience of not having the right words can become frightening when police officers are discussing your family.

Visually, Kreutzer resists the temptation to transform the family's situation into a glossy thriller. Cinematographer Judith Kaufmann, who previously worked with her on CORSAGE, favors a naturalistic presentation that keeps attention on the characters. The countryside home begins as a place the family hopes to remake together. Its unfinished rooms and areas awaiting renovation make sense for a fresh start, but they also suggest how little of that imagined future has actually been secured. Production designer Myrna Wolff treats the house as a living environment rather than a perfectly arranged symbol, allowing its ordinary details to carry more discomfort once Lucy's understanding of her marriage changes.

Kreutzer's earlier CORSAGE examined a woman whose identity was constrained by expectations imposed on her, and GENTLE MONSTER approaches female autonomy from a very different direction. Lucy has a career, a voice, and a life she has chosen, but her husband's possible actions threaten to determine how others see her and what choices remain available. She's not accused of his conduct, yet she has to deal with its consequences. That imbalance is one of the film's more upsetting observations. The damage doesn't stay neatly contained around the person under investigation, and the people closest to him can find their own lives reorganized without having done anything to invite it.

The film also has a difficult real-world history. Kreutzer began developing the idea after reading about a German investigation into child sexual abuse in 2020. Later, Florian Teichtmeister, an actor who appeared in her film CORSAGE, faced criminal proceedings involving child sexual abuse material. Kreutzer has explained that learning about his case initially made her consider abandoning GENTLE MONSTER, before she decided the personal connection made the project more necessary. It's important not to confuse that history with the fictional events on screen. The screenplay wasn't simply invented in response to that later scandal. The experience gave its director a painful additional reason to examine how little someone may know about a familiar colleague or loved one.

All of this creates expectations that no two-hour film can fully satisfy. The subject encompasses criminal investigation, family relationships, children's safety, and the emotional consequences of discovering a possible hidden life. Kreutzer is careful about whose perspective she prioritizes, but the narrative doesn't always maintain that discipline. Some detours pull attention from Lucy at moments when remaining closer to her would have been more effective. The film also deliberately leaves questions unresolved, and those shouldn't automatically be mistaken for oversights. A story about uncertainty doesn't owe its audience reassuring answers. The harder task is deciding which uncertainties deepen the characters and which simply leave an already complicated screenplay feeling less precise.

That distinction shapes my reservations about GENTLE MONSTER. The material involving Lucy has a directness that the parallel story doesn't consistently share, and the film's attempts to broaden its examination of responsibility sometimes dilute its focus. Those structural problems don't erase the care behind the central idea or the value of presenting such a painful subject without sensational imagery. They do prevent every element from carrying the same force. The strongest moments come from the emotional consequences of the accusation, not from the screenplay's efforts to draw an elaborate comparison between separate households.

GENTLE MONSTER leaves Lucy facing something more difficult than a simple choice between believing and disbelieving her husband. She must consider what protecting her child requires while accepting that the relationship she thought she understood may never look the same again. Kreutzer takes that dilemma seriously, and Seydoux gives the film a compelling center even when its structure works against it. I appreciate the refusal to turn child sexual abuse into spectacle or to let the suspected perpetrator take over the story. Some parts of the screenplay could have been more disciplined, but its central portrait of a woman trying to act responsibly while everything familiar becomes uncertain is hard to shake. The most disturbing thing here isn't an elaborate revelation. It's the possibility that the person sharing your home could remain a stranger in the ways that matter most.

Please visit https://linktr.ee/overlyhonestr for more reviews.

Follow me on Letterboxd, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
