Where to start with this, I guess the best I can do is say that it’s not a terrible film to entertain children when it becomes available to stream for free. I don’t know where they went wrong with this, but it was a big swing and miss for me. I wasn’t a fan of the original animated film, and this one doesn’t do anything to impress me.<\/p>\n

A little light at the end of the tunnel is the voice cast from the film. The stars behind the animated characters consist of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, Conrad Vernon, Bill Hader, and Wallace Shawn. If you don’t recognize some of the names, it may be because some aren’t household names, but all have an impressive track record in various forms of entertainment.<\/p>\n

The good news is that if you didn’t see the first film, there is no concern that you’re missing out on anything. There are few connections to the last movie, which is unfortunate for a simply titled “2” at the end of the name. The story is very simplistic, which I understand since it’s primarily directed at children. The problem is that most animations of late offer something for the parents who are usually watching alongside their children. I can appreciate a remarkable animated film, but a subpar film without the little “east eggs” throughout makes for a pretty dull experience.<\/p>\n

It would’ve been so easy to infuse this movie with some deeper jokes that would’ve left all impressed. I’m not entirely sure who to blame because the new standard with animated films is to have a team of writers and directors (in this case, three of each.) I don’t doubt that directing an animated movie is a giant undertaking, but I feel that too many cooks in the kitchen make for a sloppy main course. A film that didn’t reach beyond itself and instead focused on cheap slapstick style humor that doesn’t make you think for even a moment during its entire hour and thirty-three minute run time.<\/p>\n

I’m still not a fan of computer-generated animation; hand-drawn will always have a special place in my heart. Computer animation has its place, and I enjoy some of them, but nothing immerses me more in a film than the warmth of a hand-drawn story. It’s one of the reasons that I like the Oscar-nominated short animated films each year. While they aren’t all hand-drawn, there usually are several submissions that are.<\/p>\n

While this is a pretty substantial jump from an animated version of The Addams Family (although both of the original television shows premiered six days apart in 1964), I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my excitement at the potential of a new film in preproduction. Rob Zombie (as a director) is usually love\/hate with few in-between. That being said, he is working on a new live-action film adaptation of “The Munsters,” and I am very optimistic in hoping that it’s great.<\/p>\n

I definitely wouldn’t recommend wasting the $19.99 to rent this film. The good news is that we get a few more animated films between now and the end of the year, so hopefully, some impress more than this. “Encanto,” Sing 2,” “Ron's Gone Wrong,” and “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.”<\/p>\n
