What do the 1972 film THE HARDER THEY COME, the 2021 film BELFAST, and this film have in common? All three benefited greatly from subtitles for an English-speaking audience. While I watch pretty much everything with subtitles now, there are some exceptions where even though the film is in English, the accents and dialect are so that you gain a far greater appreciation for the film by being able to follow along.<\/p>\n

I wasn’t sure what this film was about; I generally try to avoid trailers, spoilers, and plot summaries. Occasionally that will backfire, and I’ll watch a movie that I don’t have much interest in. This wasn’t the case here; this was a fun-filled film that wasn’t afraid to push any barrier. The film is from Ireland, and most of the cast speaks quickly and with a thick accent. I think that adds to the unique experience, though. When you’re not stuck with a cookie-cutter film, it allows for more fun. <\/p>\n

The story is sharp, and even though it’s somewhat predictable, it doesn’t stop you from having a steady flow of laughs throughout. There’s nothing like a mobster film that takes place partially in a hair salon south of Dublin to keep you smiling from start to finish.<\/p>\n

Personally, it felt like there were plenty of homages throughout the film; I’m not sure if they were intentional or not, I’m not sure. I felt like there were winks to BOONDOCK SAINTS, MISS CONGENIALITY, ZOOLANDER, and more in some clever blink and you’ll miss it moments. These may have been me looking further into scenes than intended, but that’s what I love to do.<\/p>\n

While I wasn’t very familiar with the cast, I will say that Ericka Roe (Stacey) and Shauna Higgins (Chantelle) both stole the show for me. They are very much physical actors, and their facial expressions were able to convey so much, especially in moments where they were shocked or scared. I’ll be digging more into their acting credits when I get the chance to see how their other roles compare.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite parts of the film was the hairdressing competition; it was fun to see what the crew could do with these creations; I’m assuming that the hairdressing crew on the film was just told that the sky was the limit, and they went for it.<\/p>\n
