First and foremost, if you haven’t heard anything from Annie Hardy’s band Giant Drag, make sure to check them out. One of their songs played during the film's end credits, and I was instantly hooked! Her music, just like this film, contains plenty of direct\/dark humor, and there is something so refreshing about the sound in general.<\/p>\n

If you haven’t guessed yet, the main inspiration behind the title is that the film takes place mainly through our star Annie Hardy’s phone as she live-streams for her viewers. The film itself is probably one of the most unique experiences I’ve had in a long time. It feels like a mix of a B movie with a big-budget horror flair. You not only get to experience this unique take on horror but the “fake” audience’s reactions to what’s going on. At times the experience can be a little overwhelming, but as a whole, I enjoyed it.<\/p>\n

I reached out to Annie and asked if her self-titled character in the film was based on her own political beliefs. She steals your attention with a wonderfully obnoxious presence, a caricature of the modern MAGA republican (with the hat and all). Annie said, “I don’t believe politics are real and think it’s all a play on the world stage.” I think that her response makes me appreciate the performance even more. The fact that it was so authentic (that I felt I needed to find out) says a lot.<\/p>\n

I’m so glad that Blumhouse continues to support independent artists and visions unique to the screen. I can promise you that whatever you expect this film to be, it isn’t. While there are moments that drag a bit, overall, the nonstop pace of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat. You truly never know what or who will pop up next. It takes a lot to shock me anymore, and yet I can think of multiple scenes that left me shocked. I honestly can’t wait to see what the next project from Hardy is.<\/p>\n

Premiering at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, it was named the second runner-up for the People's Choice Award for Midnight Madness. Only behind TITANE (although I didn’t like it, many loved it) and YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER (which I haven’t seen yet.)<\/p>\n
