This one was not for me; I wanted to get that out of the way because I know all too well that just because I didn\u2019t enjoy something doesn\u2019t mean others won’t. To me, cinema is entirely subjective, and you shouldn\u2019t take someone’s word on if you\u2019ll like a film or not. That\u2019s one of the things that I try to get across in most of my reviews.<\/p>\n

I appreciate the film’s synopsis; it was very well thought out and done with care. It simply reads, \u201cA Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.\u201d Too often, a synopsis will explore themes of the film that will give away more than they should.<\/p>\n

I try my best to watch international films of all genres, so it shocked me that I didn\u2019t recognize any of the main cast. Usually, there\u2019s something that I\u2019ll remember from a cast’s filmography.  That possibly played into my appreciation for the acting in the film. Sometimes I think an \u201cunknown\u201d cast can play everyday people far better than a face I\u2019m familiar with.<\/p>\n

By every definition, this is a slow-burn film, and the payoff, in the end, is meant to shock and surprise. That\u2019s where it probably missed me the most; I don\u2019t mind being in something for the long run, THE BEST OF YOUTH is one of my favorite film experiences, and it was nearly seven hours long. My problem, though, is if a film is going to run that long, it has to have a lot of \u201cmeat on the bones,\u201d and there has to be a purpose and reasoning.<\/p>\n
