A four-star rating for a Netflix original \u201cteen\u201d comedy? This isn\u2019t the best dark comedy ever made (that honor goes to THOROUGHBREDS, if you haven\u2019t seen it, watch it); however, it\u2019s the best I\u2019ve seen in some time. I will stand by this all day long; the film was smart, funny, and, most importantly, entreating throughout from start to finish.<\/p>\n

Netflix describes the film as Hitchcockian, and I can\u2019t entirely disagree. The power behind this comes with Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke; they both gave incredible performances, and you never knew exactly how to think or feel about either of them. The twists and turns through the latter half of the film were fantastic. I won\u2019t say that director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is the second coming, but this was a significant mark, especially after (in my opinion) the lackluster writing in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what to expect when I started this, but I was quickly drawn into the fantastic world in which the film took place. Mendes (28) and Hawke (24) play their High School aged performances perfectly. I\u2019ve managed not to watch a lot from either actor (not by choice.) Mendes’s long-running role in RIVERDALE is probably her most recognized, and Hawke (daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman) is perhaps best known for her roles in STRANGER THINGS and FEAR STREET.<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t lie; initially, the poster for the film was what sold me and made me interested. I\u2019m so glad I ended up getting to screen it, though. I don\u2019t know where but I would be shocked if this didn\u2019t make my top 20-something of the year come Oscar time.<\/p>\n

Do yourself a favor and just jump into the film blind; I would guess that most won\u2019t regret it. Well-done dark comedies are hard to nail, but I think this was brilliantly done and honestly was left wanting more. The short little credit scenes just fueled the fire for me to want more in this world.<\/p>\n
