RAVING REVIEW: Crack open a book and a cold glass of your favorite beverage as we enter the world of BOOKS & DRINKS (a fitting and slightly odd name.) It draws viewers into its Caribbean setting with the promise of an intriguing mix of romance and humor. The film charts the journey of David (Jackson Rathbone,) a New Yorker who unexpectedly becomes the owner of a grand estate in the Dominican Republic, setting the stage for a story of self-discovery and heartfelt connections.

From the bustling streets of New York to sun-drenched beaches, BOOKS & DRINKS serves up a refreshing concoction of humor, heart, and just the right twist of drama. David is transplanted to an unfamiliar environment following an unexpected inheritance that challenges him to reassess his life's direction.

The narrative, directed by Geoffrey Cowper and brought to life through Josep Ciutat's screenplay, sidesteps many traditional rom-com tropes to offer a more nuanced exploration of personal struggles and relationships. Cinematographer Jose Rosete works magic behind the camera, although, to be fair, it helps when your setting is the Dominican Republic's lush landscapes.

The Caribbean isn't just a backdrop but a catalyst in David's journey. The vibrant local culture, his unknown connections, and the community members he encounters play a pivotal role in reshaping his perceptions and priorities. Each interaction with the cast of locals injects a new layer of depth into his character, reflecting a broader theme of finding one's place in the world. This dynamic setting enhances the story, making the viewer feel as though they, too, are walking the sandy shores and feeling the island breeze.

The chemistry between Rathbone's David and Nashla Bogaert's Maria adds a genuine spark to the storyline. Clara Lago, who portrays Rachel, my favorite character in the film, brings a dynamic counterpoint to this trio. Her ambitious and pragmatic character contrasts sharply with David's more whimsical inclinations. They navigate emotions, from lighthearted moments to more serious reflections on love and identity, grounding the film in relatable human experiences.

While BOOKS & DRINKS avoids falling into predictable patterns, it still occasionally treads on familiar if not predictable ground, with some scenes serving more as picturesque pauses than narrative necessities. However, these moments are balanced by the film's overall ability to connect with audiences personally, creating an entertaining and thought-provoking tale.

The film's strength lies in its interplay of humor and genuine characters, set against a backdrop that invites viewers to ponder their journeys and relationships. BOOKS & DRINKS may not venture into uncharted cinematic waters, but it navigates the rom-com genre with enough flair and insight to keep the audience engaged and invested.

BOOKS & DRINKS is a journey that enriches the viewer's experience with its warm, inviting narrative and picturesque setting. While it might not break new ground in originality, it earns high marks for its heartfelt storytelling and visual appeal, making it a worthwhile watch for those drawn to stories of love and discovery.
