RAVING REVIEW: Tinto Brass’ ALL LADIES DO IT orchestrates a captivating ballet between the sensual and boldly explicit aesthetic, serving as an introduction to a unique and particular period in cinema, proving the audacity in the ever-evolving landscape. The film, a blast of color and emotion set against the ethereal backdrop of Venice, tells the story of Diana, whom Claudia Koll delivers with a potent portrayal mixed with vivacity and vulnerability. Her journey beyond the bounds of marital fidelity, far from a simplistic tale of betrayal, is a nuanced exploration of love’s capacity to bind and liberate.
ALL LADIES DO IT dances to a rhythm from the get-go, combining the historical context of Mozart's opera "Cosi Fan Tutte" with the modern (at the time) beats of erotic storytelling. This fusion, a hallmark of Brass's directional prowess, reinvents the experience for a new audience, injecting it with a vibrant, sensual energy. This film won’t be for everyone, but for those who appreciate this raw, artistic experience, this will be the best way to experience it at home, with a stunning 4k restoration. While I don’t have a previous copy, everything I’ve found online doesn’t compare, with washed-out colors and no depth. This copy looks like it was just filmed yesterday.
In Brass’ hands, Venice transforms from a city of waterways into a pulsating character in its own right. Diana's sensuous voyage unfolds in these labyrinthine alleys and sun-drenched plazas, challenging her perceptions of fidelity and those of her husband and, by extension, the audience. This is no ordinary journey through the city but a deep dive into the heart’s complex geography, charted with a refreshing and reflective boldness.
What truly sets this film apart is its unflinching homage to the female form, celebrated with a sincerity that's as refreshing as rare. Brass’ cinematic canvas, rich in texture and tone, refuses to shy away from the explicit. Yet, it’s this very explicitness that elevates the narrative, transforming it into a manifesto of sexual autonomy and a challenge to societal mores. A film with adult content like this could rarely be celebratory over “crude,” but this film does it spectacularly! I would be curious to know more about Koll’s thoughts on the movie in the modern era.
The Cult Epics’ 4K UHD restoration breathes new life into Brass' visionary work, inviting a new generation to bask in its visual and thematic richness. This restoration is a reclamation of beauty, both of the film itself and of the provocative ideas it champions. It may look better now than during its original run.
ALL LADIES DO IT is a testament to Tinto Brass’ unique vision in filmmaking, merging the grandeur of classical storytelling with the raw, untamed territories of desire. Set against the breathtaking beauty of Venice and brought to life through Cult Epics’ meticulous restoration, the film offers an experience that’s as provocative as it is picturesque, challenging viewers to confront their views on love, lust, and liberation. This film gives audiences a rare glimpse into a world where art and erotica coalesce.
