RAVING REVIEW: Stephen Curry trades the basketball court for the sound stage in MR. THROWBACK, premiering on Peacock on August 8, 2024. In this new comedy series, Curry portrays an alternate version of himself, reconnecting with childhood pal Danny Grossman, played by Adam Pally. As Danny tries to revive their old friendship for his personal gain, viewers are treated to a cascade of comedic mishaps showing the unpredictability of resurrecting past relationships and how far a “little white lie” can go if unchecked.

The series offers viewers more than just comedy; it dives into themes of redemption and second chances. Curry's performance, infused with his real-life charisma and trademark humor, helps to carry the show. Pally, as Danny, is the perfect counter to Curry’s larger-than-life persona, offering an ideal comedic parallel to show the different paths people can take in their lives.

Ego Nwodim brings a dynamic presence to the series as Kimberly, Curry's insightful and “ever-patient” assistant. Her knack for comedic timing shines as she navigates the complexities of her role, balancing both support and skepticism towards Curry’s antics. Ayden Mayeri portrays Samantha, Danny’s EX-wife, with a mix of sharp wit and underlying warmth that adds depth to their complicated history. Her interactions with Danny blend sarcasm and sincerity, providing a solid foundation for much of the show’s relational humor.

A standout in the series is Layla Scalisi, who plays Charlie, Danny and Samantha's daughter. Despite being relatively new to acting, Scalisi demonstrates remarkable potential. Her portrayal of Charlie is not only endearing but also impressively grounded. Scalisi's timing and delivery bring a refreshing vibrancy to the series, making her scenes some of the most memorable. Her ability to hold her own alongside seasoned performers indicates a promising career.

Under the direction of David Wain and the creative team from Happy Endings, the series weaves through the complex interplay of personal growth and professional setbacks. The mockumentary style adds a layer of authenticity (so much so that having gone in blind, I wasn’t 100% sure if this was real initially,) inviting the audience into the more personal aspects of the characters' lives, making the series engaging and reflective.

With a mix of sports, laughs, and heartfelt moments, MR. THROWBACK explores the often-comical reality of confronting one's past. It’s a show about the messiness of life, the unpredictability of friendships, and the unscripted moments of clarity that often come when least expected. The series offers a platform for Curry to showcase his ability to connect with an audience beyond the basketball arena.

This show will resonate with anyone who enjoys a good laugh intertwined with genuine storytelling. MR. THROWBACK offers more than just sports comedy; it's a deeper look at how past decisions shape our present, packaged in comedic episodes that promise laughter and a few poignant moments. Not to mention, it is one of the most effortless binge-watching experiences that I can remember. With just six episodes, the story flows easily and keeps you returning for each episode.
