RAVING REVIEW: JOYSTICKS catapults viewers into the electric, neon-drenched, hairspray-infused days of the 1980s arcade scene, mixing a tale of mischief and rebellion beneath dim lights and stained carpets. Directed by Greydon Clark with an eye for the era's exuberant spirit, the arcade isn't just a backdrop—it's the heart of the action, pulsating with the wild energy of the times.

As the film starts, we're dropped into the throbbing heart of an arcade, alive with the sights and sounds that define a generation. This isn't just any hangout—it's the epicenter of the 80s, an excellent place where battles are fought not with fists but joysticks. Enter Eugene, played by Leif Green, whose introduction via a practical joke sets the tone for his quirky, challenging adventure through arcade life.

Scott McGinnis's Jeff, once a high-score hero, now manages this digital playground. His journey from player to manager directly conflicts with a local heavyweight, portrayed by Joe Don Baker, who sees the arcade as a den of vileness influencing his daughter and the town's youth. This sets up a cultural showdown, pitching old-world conservatism against the freewheeling rebellion of arcade-goers. (the more things change, the more they stay the same)

King Vidiot, a rebel with colored hair, played by Jon Gries, adds a splash of rowdiness to the mix. He and his punk entourage bring chaos and a commentary on the era, all against iconic arcade noises from classics like Pac-Man to the memorable clink of the coin slot. The arcade buzzes as a vibrant memory of the decade's gaming obsession.

While JOYSTICKS has its fair share of crass humor and aged oneliners, it mirrors the decade's comic style. This is a film that has to be watched through those nostalgic glasses. It manages to weave reflective threads on societal dynamics through its lively sets and pulsating soundtrack.

The final act delivers a nostalgic punch—a video game face-off where Jeff and his crew battle the businessman's minions. It’s a predictable yet victorious moment that captures the film’s theme of youthful rebellion.

As the quintessential 80s film, JOYSTICKS is more than a trip down memory lane—it's a vibrant portrait of an era when arcade games were the battlegrounds for debates and a significant slice of everyday life. This film is a love letter to that time, brimming with the energy, drama, and laughter of an unforgettable arcade era. The commentaries included with this release are not to be missed, as they add an undeniable look into what this film means to the period.

For anyone fond of those 80s vibes and the chaotic charm of old-school arcades, JOYSTICKS delivers a fun, reflective journey into the heart of nostalgia. It’s a film that entertains and encapsulates the spirit of a pivotal moment in cultural history, making it a must-watch for era enthusiasts.
