RAVING REVIEW: Indie cinema often offers a refreshing break from mainstream releases, and GRANDMA BRUCE stands out with its uniquely enchanting narrative. This delightful short film introduces us to a peculiar scenario where a young adult’s car becomes the new home to their late grandmother’s spirit. The blend of light-hearted comedy with deep connections provides a rich presentation of personal and intergenerational tales of growth. I won't lie, that synopsis sounds a little crazy, but for some reason, it just works here.

GRANDMA BRUCE is directed by Brooke Stern Sebold, whose personal bond with their grandmother and a cherished vehicle named Bruce inspires the film's heartfelt narrative. This connection not only anchors the story in reality but also paints a loving tribute to the enduring influence of our family, often felt long after they have departed. This may be the most impressive part of the film; this is the definition of what a passion project is and what indie cinema is all about!

Laura Chirinos, in the role of Brooke, navigates the complexities of dealing with a spiritual presence that is both comforting and comically critical. In portraying the spirited grandmother, Monica Piper infuses the film with a delightful mix of warmth and wit, enhancing the comedic tone with her seasoned timing. A film that covers the entire spectrum of emotions in just 13 minutes is an impressive accomplishment!

The behind-the-scenes decision-making process revealed an interesting pivot when Sebold chose to direct rather than star, ensuring a sharper focus on the film’s artistic direction. This decision worked well as the emphasis was put on the heart of the story, particularly in the dynamic between Chirinos and Piper, whose on-screen chemistry is a highlight, offering lightheartedness and authenticity.

The creation of GRANDMA BRUCE was no small feat, especially given the logistical challenges posed by the pandemic and a tight budget. The turmoil turned unexpectedly when Bruce, the real-world car and a central “character,” was totaled just before filming. Sebold's quick action and adaptability were crucial in swiftly replacing the vehicle and maintaining the production schedule.

The film's storytelling was crafted uniquely, influenced by Sebold’s love for iconic family and fantasy films. The challenge of shooting primarily inside a car did not restrict the creative possibilities but instead inspired a series of innovative shots that effectively captured the essence of the story.

Complementing the visuals, Dave McKeever's score and the film’s sound design envelop the audience in a world of magical realism. This is beautifully rounded off with an animated credit sequence by Jayakrishnan Subramanian, leaving viewers with a lasting impression of whimsy and wonder.

GRANDMA BRUCE offers a light-hearted escape from the often disheartening world we all have to see around us. It reminds us of the magic and humor that life holds. It serves as a joyful reminder of the quirky, endearing aspects of bonds that persist through generations.

Brooke Stern Sebold's creative journey continues to evolve with the upcoming series “I Changed My Mind.” This project delves into the nature of personal evolution, showcasing Sebold’s dedication to pushing narrative boundaries and engaging audiences in thoughtful dialogue.
