RAVING REVIEW: Stepping into the neon-soaked corridors of the adult film industry, MAR.IA emerges as a strikingly bold narrative directed by Gabriel Grieco and Nicanor Loreti. The story begins in 2024 with Maria Black (Daria Panchenko,) a leading figure in the adult film scene, whose life turns dark following an accident resulting in a coma. A media whirlwind follows that quickly subsides, leaving a mysterious silence in its wake.

In 2027, the plot thickens as Maria astonishingly reappears, seemingly back from the dead, to reclaim her position in the industry. However, her comeback is tragically cut short by her sudden death during a film shoot, setting off a macabre chain of events. The in-world director of the film exploits this tragedy to orchestrate a grim money-making scheme, revealing a deep-seated revenge plot. Now a haunting figure, Maria seeks retribution against those who exploited her, weaving a tale of vengeance through the neon lights.

The directors' stylistic homage to the visual and thematic elements of the 80s and 90s cult films adds a layer of retro charm to the film, enhancing its surreal atmosphere with a vibrant palette of neon pinks and blues. Malena Sánchez's portrayal of Alina, the sound engineer, and Sofía Gala Castiglione’s Mel provide a human connection to the audience as they brave the treacherous currents of a corrupted industry.

Their performances are the backbone of MAR.IA, adding a significant emotional dimension to the narrative’s more intense scenes. The film cleverly uses its stylistic elements and practical effects to transcend its budgetary constraints, creating a captivating cinematic experience that is both unique and immersive. Panchenko’s take on Maria, especially later in the film, adds a very self-aware fun to the entire picture.

MAR.IA commands attention with its unrelenting pace and bold genre fusion. With a concise runtime of under 90 minutes, the film moves briskly, maintaining viewer engagement without overstaying its welcome. Its dark humor and stark depictions of violence appeal to those with a taste for audacious storytelling. To be fair, the film covers a lot of questionable topics. They swing for the fences to make the audience uncomfortable, and they succeed in doing so!

The film’s dramatic and shocking finale climax epitomizes its flair for impactful storytelling, highlighted by meticulous special effects and sharp editing. This showcases the filmmakers’ resourcefulness and underscores the film’s thematic ambitions for viewers intrigued by themes of revenge, corruption, and the perils of artificial intelligence, MAR.IA offers a provocative and stimulating film experience. It challenges the audience to contemplate complex themes while delivering a visually thrilling and emotionally resonant story.

MAR.IA will captivate audiences with its vivid imagery and rapid storytelling. Despite some narrative rough edges, the film’s inventive energy and creative direction secure its place as a notable contribution to the sci-fi and horror genres. It is a compelling testament to filmmaking that both explores and provokes, leaving a lasting impression on those drawn to its bold and gritty narrative.
