RAVING REVIEW: WALID takes you on an exploration of martial arts alongside a deep dive into some stark societal realities. Under the discerning directorial gaze of Areel Abu Bakar, this film lights up the screen, illuminating the profound importance of education and shedding light on the grim reality of child trafficking. This fusion of action and poignant social commentary, reminiscent of classic 90s films, sets WALID apart as an engaging narrative experience.
Let me clear the air; while this film genre isn’t my cup of tea, the film itself tells an important story. Even with an in-your-face mashup, it still will get your attention. While I didn’t enjoy the film experience, I won’t soon forget the message it was telling. I think it’s essential that you separate the two, the importance of the story of a film vs. the film itself. This isn’t the same process as separating the “art” from the artist, which I think shouldn’t be done, but this is about the film's message.
With a unique stylistic approach that has earned him the Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema and a Special Jury Award, Areel Abu Bakar crafts a visual saga that seizes the audience's attention from the get-go. At the center of this saga is the titular character, Walid, brought to life by Megat Sharizal. He's a beacon in his village, illuminating the path to education for disadvantaged children. However, this peaceful existence is shattered when an evil syndicate encroaches, kidnapping several children, including Aisha (Putri Qaseh), one of Walid's regular students. This disturbing event turns the narrative tide, leading Walid to confront his worst nightmares.
As the tale unfolds, we look closer at the growing bond between Walid and Aisha. This heartwarming relationship, reminiscent of a father-daughter dynamic, is the heart of the story, especially when contrasted with Aisha's strained interactions with her overly protective mother, Kinang (Feiyna Tajudin). This balance between tranquility and turmoil sets Walid on a heroic mission to rescue the children.
The film gracefully handles the delicate issue of immigrant identity, setting Walid as a beacon of cultural integration amidst a society wrestling with transformation. As the narrative moves forward, WALID plunges headfirst into a whirlpool of martial arts sequences, prompting the question – can there be too much action in an action film? Though these scenes are executed with precision and undeniable vigor, their repeated intensity may overwhelm some viewers.
In summary, WALID is a cinematic journey that expands the conventional boundaries of action cinema. Its blend of high-intensity action scenes and thought-provoking narrative invites viewers to reflect on severe societal dilemmas. As a homage to martial arts and a plea for societal evolution, WALID underscores the genre's potential for innovation and meaningful impact.
