RAVING REVIEW: Short films have always been one of the most intriguing mediums in which an artist (or group of artists) can work. From my days in my High School film courses, where we made our short films, to some of the fantastic film festivals I’ve had the honor of screening, shorts have a different level of “soul!” SOUL MATES is no different; the film was crafted under the vision of Michelle Tomlinson and the scriptwriting talent of Jim Sea; it is a short drama that captures the heart and imagination in a mere twelve minutes. This film is a visual experience and an emotional journey exploring love. Seamlessly blending philosophical musings with a narrative that rings true to life, this film invites viewers on a thoughtful journey about the enduring power of connection.

Sean and Abby are at the heart of SOUL MATES, brought to life by Jim Sea and Kristine Isom. Their story, mixed with themes of love, loss, and the pursuit of an everlasting connection, forms the emotional nucleus of the film. The onset of a life-changing diagnosis for Sean ignites a series of poignant exchanges and shared experiences, beautifully illustrating the depth and resilience of their bond.

The characters Nigel and Poppy, played by Josh Horton and Sydney Carvill, add a reflective depth to the narrative. Their addition to the cast, especially in the film's emotionally charged climax, enhances the central theme, demonstrating the strength of love even in the face of daunting challenges. The cast delivers performances steeped in vulnerability and depth, with Sea and Isom's acting grounding the film's themes in reality.

Tomlinson approaches the sensitive subject matter with a delicate touch. Steering clear of overt sentimentality, SOUL MATES opts for a nuanced exploration of its central themes. This subtlety enriches the film's emotional resonance, making the profound themes of love and loss accessible and impactful for a broad audience.

To be entirely transparent, this is a small, independent passion project carried by the heart of the cast and crew. No one will mistake this for a big-budget film, but that’s not why I watch shorts. I watch them for the experience, for the story that a group of people have poured their everything into so that they could share it with others.

Despite its short runtime, SOUL MATES ambitiously addresses its theme of love transcending life and death. It is a testament to the power of storytelling and the charm of a well-spun love story. The film sparks deep contemplation about the nature of love and the potential for connections that extend beyond our current existence.

SOUL MATES is a compelling watch for anyone looking for an experience as touching as it is thought-provoking. This story deserves to be shared; hopefully, everyone will be able to watch it sooner rather than later!
