RAVING REVIEW: Dustin Curtis Murphy’s latest directorial outing, COYOTE (also known as TELEPORT,) immerses viewers in a grim dystopian future where teleportation technology misrepresents a dark core of human despair and societal decay. The film’s protagonists, Ekaterina (Therica Wilson-Read) and Anya (Borislava Stratieva,) are lovers entangled in a perilous journey to escape a regime bent on genocide (an unfortunate and all too real parallel to what our world could hold if allowed to continue course unchecked.). Their quest for safety becomes a harrowing odyssey through a landscape marred by deceit and corruption, illustrating the stark realities of a society on the brink.

In COYOTE, Murphy veers away from conventional sci-fi norms, opting instead for a stark portrayal of human trafficking masked by the promise of high-tech salvation. The story thickens with Ekaterina’s tragic deception and separation from Anya, which lands her in what is a refuge of sorts. Here, Ailish Symons delivers a riveting performance as Orla Miller, whose malevolence fuels the narrative’s tense and oppressive atmosphere. The setting, a luxurious estate far from just a backdrop, plays a central role in unfolding the gruesome realities beneath its sheltering facade.

The director’s approach to eschew flashy sci-fi elements allows a profound exploration of the characters’ psychological and ethical battles. Cinematographer Josh Birch complements this vision perfectly, employing subdued hues and constricted compositions to accentuate the film’s claustrophobic ambiance. This visual strategy heightens the sense of entrapment and aligns seamlessly with the film’s intense thematic concerns.

As Ekaterina unravels the grim conditions of the sanctuary and plots her daring escape, the narrative introduces us to other captives, each adding their unique shade to the canvas of struggle and defiance. The climactic scene, where Ekaterina orchestrates a daring reversal of fortunes, symbolizes empowerment and resistance against systemic oppression.

Despite its modest budget, COYOTE exemplifies what a well-executed indie film can achieve. The production leverages its constraints creatively, creating a visually distinctive, intimate, and expansive film. The restrained use of special effects and the focus on character-driven storytelling underscore the film’s raw and authentic aesthetic, making it a standout example of indie filmmaking prowess.

Although COYOTE grapples with occasional slow pacing and the limitations of its primarily singular setting, these elements are turned to their advantage, enhancing the psychological pressure and escalating the stakes. The plot’s non-linear progression cleverly unfolds, layer by layer, revealing essential moments that reward an attentive audience with rich, narrative payoffs.

Murphy’s film also boldly addresses social issues, integrating LGBTQIA+ themes that deepen the connection between Ekaterina and Anya. Their relationship transcends the typical subplot to become COYOTE’s emotional epicenter, offering hope and a poignant critique of identity and resilience amidst societal turmoil.

COYOTE is a fusion of speculative fiction and sharp social observation. It challenges its audience to ponder the profound effects of technological advancements against the backdrop of human vulnerability. A film that encourages viewers to question and reflect is crucial for those who cherish cinema that not only entertains but also provokes thought and fosters dialogue.
