RAVING REVIEW: In the world of historical documentaries, TITO, MARGOT AND ME stands out as an exploration of an unusual coupling between Margot Fonteyn, a renowned ballerina, and Roberto “Tito” Arias, a diplomat engulfed in political turmoil. This film, directed by Mercedes Arias and Delfina Vidal, travels beyond the conventional boundaries of storytelling to unravel the intricate dynamics of love enmeshed with the high stakes of political intrigue and the personal sacrifices it demands.
Rather than simply chronicling a grand love story, TITO, MARGOT AND ME dives deep into its subjects' past, bringing an almost tangible authenticity. The directors navigate through the couple's early separations and poignant reunions, displaying how their bond endured the ravages of time and circumstance. This journey isn’t just about their romance and the resilience and mutual respect that fueled their relationship against a backdrop of global unrest.
Yet, the film doesn’t shy away from the grittier aspects of their lives. It delves into the political chaos of the late 1950s, where Arias’s involvement in a coup d’état led to exile and Fonteyn’s brief imprisonment. These events are framed within the broader context of their public lives, revealing the personal costs of their ambitions and the pressures of living under the public eye.
TITO, MARGOT AND ME also incorporates stunning dance sequences that reflect the couple’s emotional journey, choreographed by Maruja Herrera and Valentino Zucchetti. While a treat for the eyes, these interludes might not have the same impact for all viewers, as they occasionally drift towards being more decorative than narrative-driven. However, they are a beautiful homage to Fonteyn’s ballet career and a metaphor for the couple’s life dance through joy and adversity.
The documentary is undeniably shaped by Mercedes Arias’s connection to Tito and Margot. This relationship allows for intimate insights yet also colors the portrayal with a layer of partiality, especially when touching on more controversial aspects of their lives; it occasionally skirts around the darker facets of Arias’s career and personal life, leaving some stones unturned.
A critical moment in the film is the portrayal of the shooting incident that altered their lives, showcasing Fonteyn’s transition from partner to caregiver. This segment highlights her formidable strength and unwavering commitment, painting a portrait of love transcending traditional romantic boundaries to encompass a more profound, enduring partnership.
Despite some artistic liberties with digital effects meant to evoke nostalgia, the film sometimes risks feeling contrived. The directors use archival footage interspersed with modern digital enhancements that strive to enhance the historical ambiance but can feel out of sync with the documentary’s authentic spirit.
In conclusion, TITO, MARGOT AND ME is a compelling narrative of dedication. It depicts how love and loyalty can flourish even in the shadow of significant personal and political challenges. The film celebrates the human spirit’s capacity to overcome adversity, making it essential in historical documentaries. Unfortunately, in the end, the film wasn’t for me; it felt like it was missing something, more of a surface-level dive or exploration instead of the deep dive we needed.
