RAVING REVIEW: When the battlefield smoke clears, there's usually something heavier lurking in the silence that follows. Colin Henning’s APPALACHIAN DOG captures this lingering tension through a unique exploration of a soldier’s return home after World War II. It's 1946, and amidst the quietness of the Appalachian mountains, a tailor and his seamstress wife attempt a hopeful and unsettling reunion. Henning's debut offers a compelling look into the strained home life of post-war, layered with heartfelt performances, stunning cinematography, and quiet humor, though occasionally held back by overly cautious storytelling.

Henning himself stars as Teddy Henry, a veteran whose return home is more complicated than celebratory. Henning brings a quiet authenticity to Teddy, portraying him as a man visibly at odds with the life awaiting him. The character’s discomfort echoes through small moments—a nervous glance, a hesitant movement—rather than big dramatic speeches, making Teddy's internal struggles feel remarkably genuine. This performance anchors the film, serving as a powerful contrast to his wife, Marion, played by Georgia Morgan. Morgan embodies Marion as someone who, in Teddy's absence, has grown confident and self-sufficient, unintentionally creating a silent divide that complicates their reunion.

One of the best decisions Henning makes in APPALACHIAN DOG is allowing the supporting cast to provide subtle yet impactful emotional weight. Peggie, Marion’s assistant, played by Hayleigh Hart Franklin, brings an essential layer of complexity into the film. The nuanced exchanges between Marion and Peggie—particularly one cleverly symbolic moment involving lipstick left behind on a glass—create poignant undertones without resorting to overly explanatory dialogue. This restrained storytelling gives viewers emotional space to interpret and appreciate characters’ unspoken feelings, revealing Henning's talent for crafting impactful moments from quiet interactions.

Visually, the APPALACHIAN DOG is nothing short of remarkable. Cinematographer Aidan Macaluso employs a creative, almost theatrical style emphasizing the characters’ emotional entrapment. The stark landscapes aren’t merely background settings; they actively reflect and intensify the characters’ emotional isolation. Clever framing choices, often using windows or doorways, enhance the sense of entrapment within their lives, effectively communicating each character's underlying claustrophobia. This strategy creates a rich, symbolic backdrop for the unfolding emotional drama, drawing viewers deeper into the characters’ internal worlds.

The decision to shoot at historically authentic locations in North Carolina adds tangible credibility and charm. From a vintage barn dating back over a century to carefully curated Depression-era interiors, these details ground the story in its post-war setting. Costuming also plays a crucial storytelling role: Marion’s increasingly sophisticated wardrobe mirrors her growth and independence, while Teddy’s progressively muted clothing choices subtly indicate his internal decline.

Rather than relying on a typical musical score, Henning opts for a naturalistic soundscape filled with subtle cues—the creak of old timber, wildlife, the whisper of wind—that quietly amplify tension. The sparse and strategic use of music via a scratchy record player heightens key emotional moments, enhancing the overall mood without overwhelming the dialogue or performances.

While the film's meticulous subtlety often strengthens its storytelling, it sometimes veers into cautiousness that undercuts potential emotional highs. There are scenes throughout APPALACHIAN DOG where intense emotional moments seem prematurely cut off or restrained. Allowing these moments to play out could have significantly deepened audience investment, fostering a stronger emotional connection to the character’s inner conflicts. Similarly, a few twists concerning secondary characters feel rushed, reducing their impact and leaving viewers slightly disconnected during crucial revelations.

Henning does well by incorporating moments of natural humor throughout the drama. Rather than shoehorning jokes or comedic set-pieces, the film allows humor to surface organically from everyday human awkwardness. Teddy’s struggles adjusting to civilian tasks and Marion’s quiet frustration over everyday domestic life add warmth to the film, making characters relatable without losing sight of the emotional weight driving the story.

APPALACHIAN DOG offers an absorbing portrait of post-war emotional complexities, managing to portray turmoil without relying on heavy-handed melodrama. Although the film occasionally holds back too much, its impressive style, authentic settings, and performances from Henning and Morgan deliver a sincere and effective depiction of personal battles fought far from any actual warzone.
