A French Comedy Series That Was an Easy Binge

One of the best aspects of reviewing things that you’ve only seen a poster of or heard only the title of is the surprises you get when you screen them. This was one of those cases; I knew nothing about this, including that it was a series (and not a film.) That was only a shock to me when I went to screen it and found out I was looking at a runtime of a little over 3.5 hours instead of the traditional film length of an hour and a half or so.

A French series (with English dubs and/or English language subtitles as well), the series is titled DÉTOX in France and many other countries. I’m assuming the name change was needed because of the idea of what detox is in certain countries. I think OFF THE HOOK also works, but I favor the original title a little more.

The series itself very much feels like a film broken into parts. Although arguably each is okay as episodic chapters, the entire story plays out well, watching them back to back. The film’s main story mirrors many (including myself) real-life struggles of their addiction to the internet and the world in the palm of their hands. The story within the story of Manon (Manon Azem) is just as interesting; seeing the struggles she battles through each episode indeed kept me coming back. Azem has quite the extensive filmography of TV series appearances, and after her performance here, I will check out some of her other roles.

If you’re looking for an easy watch (even if you don’t speak French, remember there are English dubs available), this is an easy binge for anyone. I traditionally would shy away from recommending dubs, but I watched one episode with them, and they were very well done. You hardly notice if you’re okay with a few moments where the sync doesn’t align perfectly.
