RAVING REVIEW: The latest entry of the VELMA animated series is VELMA: THIS HALLOWEEN NEEDS TO BE MORE SPECIAL! it offers a twist on the classic animated mystery genre, intertwining deeper psychological elements with a narrative that challenges both characters and audience alike. This special intensifies the suspense with its supernatural stakes and delves into the personal fears and societal masks that shape our interactions. I get it; die-hard Scooby-Doo fans can’t separate themselves from their classic cartoon and struggle to accept anything different. VELMA isn’t meant for them; this isn’t your Scooby-Doo; this is its creation in its unique universe; if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. It is deliciously evil that their “hate-watching” has been vital to the series' success.

In this special, urgency grips the storyline as Velma and the crew undertake a critical mission to rescue one of their own. The team's quest to locate a cursed spellbook is fraught with danger, as they must outwit a vengeful specter hell-bent on their destruction. The urgency is compounded by the Sexy Halloween party, where the line between real and unreal blurs, pushing the gang to confront their deepest fears.

The spotlight shines on Velma, Daphne, Fred, and Norville, who navigate a sea of personal doubts and relationship dynamics. Exploring their vulnerabilities offers a refreshing take on their characters, making their adventures resonate with viewers on a more personal level. This episode gives us a special guest star (like the old classic cartoons of my childhood). I think this was one of the most unique aspects of the episode and will be a welcome addition to the fanbase.

Horror elements are woven into the narrative, enhancing the sense of danger. The ghost they encounter is no mere plot device but a manifestation of the characters' unresolved issues, symbolizing the real hauntings of past traumas. This approach elevates the horror beyond superficial scares, reflecting on the character's inner struggles. And yes, I LOVE diving beyond the surface level on animation!

A significant highlight is Velma's character development. No longer just the brainy detective, she is portrayed as a complex individual wrestling with issues of identity and acceptance. This season allows her journey to self-discovery to be depicted on a different level, aligning with matters of representation and acceptance, making her story central to the series' impact.

On the visual front, the episode impresses with vivid animations and a dynamic color palette that enhances the storytelling, which has become a staple of Max animation for its original series.

VELMA: THIS HALLOWEEN NEEDS TO BE MORE SPECIAL! marks a step forward in the series' animated storytelling, seamlessly integrating terror, humor, and drama. It provides a rich, layered viewing experience that challenges characters and viewers alike, making it a standout addition. This episode entertains and provokes thought, proving that traditional characters can thrive in new narratives that embrace complexity and innovation.
