RAVING REVIEW: From its opening scene, the short film GREEN grips you with an iconic moment that catapults you into a world of intrigue and mystery. A woman finds herself in a remote desert, confused, with a lifeless body beside her and only fleeting segmented memories of prior events. This chilling setup is a whirlwind of suspense and drama, showing exactly what can be accomplished in just 8 minutes; more depth was demonstrated in the short runtime here than in many feature-length films I’ve seen.
GREEN, written and starring Michigan’s own Michelle Draper, showcases her evolution from backyard productions to full-fledged cinematic endeavors. Her film tells the story of a woman lost in her memories; the vastness of the desert is used as a parallel, trying to help piece together the fragments of an idyllic getaway turned nightmare. The narrative alternates between past and present, drawing viewers into a vortex of suspense and revelation.
The film’s director, Chris Johnson of Cineatra Media, transforms the barren desert into a canvas that reflects the turmoil within the protagonist. Johnson’s background allows him to seamlessly capture the stark landscapes that will enable you to focus on the story while reminding us of the surroundings. His lens captures every nuanced expression and desolate vista, all of which help to heighten the film’s intense atmosphere.
Draper’s screenplay ventures into dark themes of loss, rejection, and more, tackling the story head-on without holding back from showing the terror within. The script is a labyrinth of emotional and psychological twists that challenge the protagonist and the audience alike to confront uncomfortable truths. It’s a narrative that doesn’t just aim to thrill but also to provoke thought about the complexities of human relationships and the scars they can leave.
The script’s and cinematography’s interplay creates a layered narrative that meticulously builds tension. Each scene is crafted to gradually escalate the suspense, keeping the audience engaged and on edge. This crescendo of tension culminates in a climax that is both unexpected and deeply satisfying, offering a resolution that resonates with the film’s introspective journey.
What sets GREEN apart is its plot mechanics and exploration of the human psyche. It delves into the fabric of human connections, unraveling the threads of love, betrayal, and the quest for redemption. Draper’s direction ensures that the film’s pacing and tone are perfectly balanced, maintaining a gripping rhythm that complements the story’s emotional depth. Again, all within just 8 minutes, I can only imagine what could be done with a feature-length runtime and the threads of the narrative all expanded upon.
GREEN is a reflective and immersive experience that examines the contours of memory, the weight of the past, and the indelible impact of personal relationships. Through the combined talents of the cast and crew, the film achieves a remarkable synergy between storytelling and visual artistry, making it a unique and powerful cinematic experience that resonates with viewers long after the finale.
