At some point, just about everyone has done a “scariest movie moments” series. I can only discuss the first episode that premieres next Wednesday on Shudder. This episode covers moments 101-89, and I was shocked multiple times throughout. The series looks at historical horror and not just “modern scares.” I feel like that is something many of these series seem to forget; they focus too much on the modern-day “scary” moments and forget how things have aged.

While Shudder has allowed the names of some of the films to be disclosed, I’m purposely going to avoid listing any as I feel that’s almost like a spoiler. I will mention that in this small sampling, there were films from the 50s, modern movies, and everything in between. You never knew what you were in for with the next pick; some of the classic “go-to” films that you figured would be in there were present, but there were also some that I would’ve never expected. I think that’s part of what I enjoyed most about it.

Sure, some of the effects from the older films have aged over the years, but that was part of what was so great about this list. So far, it isn’t the 101 current scariest films but the 101 of all time at the time of their releases. On top of the list itself, there were some incredible interviews, from actors to directors to super fans. You could see the passion while they were talking about these films. They didn’t just gloss over the entries but had a passion for each moment, with the history of the moment in context.

I’ll be covering each new episode every week now until number 1.
