RAVING REVIEW: Set along the sun-drenched shores of Cadaqués, WAITING FOR DALÍ paints a lively and artistically resonant portrait of Spain at a crossroads. This film offers a rich narrative that blends humor with an undercurrent of striving for newfound freedom. Amidst this transformative backdrop, two brothers, Fernando (Ivan Massagué) and Alberto (Alberto Lozano,) flee the turbulence of Barcelona and delve into a surreal challenge at El Surreal, a restaurant dedicated to drawing the eye of the legendary Salvador Dalí.

Under the ambitious eye of Jules (José Garcia) (you’ll be excused if you thought this was Robert Downey Jr., or at minimum, his cousin!), the establishment's proprietor, the restaurant morphs into a theatre of the surreal, where the culinary arts and surrealistic endeavors meld seamlessly, challenging traditional boundaries and expectations. Jules is fixated on the goal of having Dalí himself taste his innovative dishes, turning every meal into a piece of art.

David Pujol directs the film, which navigates the cultural tapestry of French and Spanish influences, enriching the storyline without overcomplicating it. Pujol's flair for infusing scenes with a surreal quality reminiscent of Dalí's work transforms everyday moments into captivating spectacles.

The town of Cadaqués is more than just a setting—it is a vibrant character within the film, along with the restaurant itself. Its picturesque charm and the eclectic array of residents provide a dynamic backdrop that enhances the story's comedic and dramatic elements. Cinematographer Román Martínez de Bujo expertly captures this essence, with each frame bursting with the vivid colors and light of the Mediterranean, contributing significantly to the film's visual storytelling.

Performance-wise, Massagué stands out as Fernando, whose culinary ambitions catapult him to local fame. Clara Ponsot, as Lola, helps to portray Fernando's evolving relationship, adding personal stakes to his professional endeavors. García embodies Jules, whose driven nature to fulfill his dreams provides a study of the tension between personal passions and professional duties.

WAITING FOR DALÍ also tackles the darker undercurrents of Spain's history, with the lingering effects of past oppression casting long shadows over the narrative's lighter moments. This contrast is not merely for dramatic effect; it serves as a powerful reminder of the role of art in challenging and reshaping societal norms.

More than just an exploration of a restaurateur's ambitious pursuit, WAITING FOR DALÍ is a profound reflection on the unpredictability of life, the lasting impact of artistic endeavors, and the emancipating power of creativity. The film leaves its audience inspired and reflective, like its characters who navigate the thin lines between dream and reality, forever altered by their experiences.

WAITING FOR DALÍ is a testament to the enduring legacy of artists like Dalí, who continue to inspire and provoke thought long after their time. It offers a blend of laughter, stunning visual artistry, and thoughtful dialogue on the profound influence of creativity, marking it as a memorable experience for a broad audience.
