This was a film with a storyline I never thought I’d see in my entire life. In short, it’s about an older man in a village named Ananda, and he has an obsession with adult films. Living in a conservative town, this would be frowned upon, so he watches them in secret. One day he gets a DVD that isn’t what he was expecting; it is a different kind of adult movie, a film by the legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. What happens next is quite the interesting roller-coaster of back and forth between Ananda and his friends. The film also spends a lot of time covering a unique side story with Ananda’s daughter Shilpa.

I found it fascinating that the writer/director chose to create a tribute to Godard with this storyline. While the film didn’t connect with me, I did find it incredibly interesting and unique. An idea that you don’t see every day. There was nothing I inherently disliked about the film, and despite others' criticism, I have it right in the middle—a movie I didn’t hate but also didn’t love. There were interesting things about it, but I also got distracted easily by some slower burn moments.

The film hurts itself the most by spreading itself too thin. It was as though the director wanted to tell more stories than the movie could contain. This is more of a personal complaint, but the randomness between the black & white, color, and color-saturated black & white felt more distracting than the given purpose. I would’ve liked to have seen it all in black & white with sharp contrast. I think it would have given the film a more assertive tone.

Sometimes you have to try new things to see what you like the best and where you want to go next. This may not have been my cup of tea, but it may be yours! If nothing else, the film was an ambitious project and quite different from director Amartya Bhattacharyya’s other feature films.
