RAVING REVIEW: For two decades plus, THE VENTURE BROS., an animated marvel birthed by Chris McCulloch (also known as "Jackson Publick") and Doc Hammer for Cartoon Network's late-night programming block Adult Swim, has held a prominent place in the hearts of its viewers. Despite numerous hiatuses between seasons, it's storytelling prowess and superior production value have never ceased to enthrall. Now I had planned to have my coverage up closer to the release date. I had never watched an episode, so I set out on the binge of a lifetime, basically watching Venture Bros. nonstop whenever I wasn’t at work. I had no clue what I was in for, and I can happily say it was the best week of binging I can remember!

This series isn't your everyday cartoon; it's an inventive medley of satire, action, and comedy, crafting a new narrative in adult animation. Predating RICK AND MORTY by years, the saga follows the thrilling antics of Hank (Christopher McCulloch) and Dean Venture (Michael Sinterniklaas,) evoking memories of iconic 80s action cartoons like JOHNNY QUEST (at least before getting its feet and creating its unique subgenre.) Their father, Dr. Venture (James Urbaniak), an accomplished second-generation scientist, and protected by their robust bodyguard Brock Samson (voiced by Patrick Warburton), the boys engage in global escapades. As the narrative unfolds, it begins to spotlight a vibrant assortment of diverse characters. THE VENTURE BROS. Debuted intending to mock boys' adventure literature, highlighting classics like ‘The Hardy Boys’ with a comedic twist.

THE VENTURE BROS. Established its unique niche in Cartoon Network's Adult Swim from 2003 to 2018. Reflecting on THE VENTURE BROS.' early seasons is quite a ride, considering today's pop culture obsession with superheroes. Initially, only devoted comic book enthusiasts could spot similarities between characters like Doctor Oprheus and Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange or Brock’s love interest, Molotov Cocktease, and Black Widow. Yet, thanks to the sharp scriptwriting and exceptional voice cast led by Publick and Hammer, the series retains its timeless allure.

Much like its contemporaries, THE VENTURE BROS. Has evolved dramatically over its 82-episode run. It morphed from the satire of adventure pop culture into a deep dive into Rusty's family dynamics and the burden of his father's monumental legacy. It further delves into how organizations function in pursuit of global peace or fostering chaos. Such explorations connect us with eccentric characters, occasionally crossing paths with the Venture brothers.

At its heart, THE VENTURE BROS. is an electrifying blend of adventure, comedy, and satire—the series uniquely tribute 1960s animated classics and sci-fi shows. Everyone’s spirits remain indomitable, regardless of their recurrent issues and replacements throughout the series. Yet, Dr. Venture's casual disregard for conventional topics like ethics and morality creates a fascinating contrast. This series paved the way for many like it but was able to be it's own and will likely hold a special place in fans' hearts no matter what homages come to pass.

Keep an eye out for a direct-to-video film, THE VENTURE BROS.: RADIANT IS THE BLOOD OF THE BABOON HEART, which will be released on July 21, on digital, and July 25, 2023, on Blu-ray. The film will act as a finale to the series.
