Army of the Dead
–
If any director has successfully covered a more comprehensive range of genres, I don’t know who it would be. Zack Snyder started with the zombie genre and has made his return in his latest film ‘Army of the Dead.’ Snyder has had many hits in my book, my favorite being ‘Sucker Punch’ by far. Although it’s been panned by critics in general, I loved everything about it. Most of you have probably heard about the recent drama that ended up getting Warner Brothers to release ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ a four-and-a-half-hour version of his final vision of the film (he stepped down from directing during a family emergency.) They gave in and let him do his dream, and by all accounts, it’s been a huge success financially for Warner Brothers, especially their streaming service HBO Max.
Not long after, his next film would be released on Netflix and in theaters simultaneously. ‘Army of the Dead’ is a film with an exciting concept that succeeds for the most part. While not perfect by any definition, I do think it had a lot going for it. My biggest personal gripe would be the overly bloated cast. With a group of at least 12 “main characters,” the story is a little convoluted initially and takes a lot to explain everyone’s purpose in the film. Unfortunately, they went for an ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ video and missed the mark. That’s not to say that it wasn’t enjoyable, just a critique I wanted to express.
Its biggest highlight had to be the CGI and practical effects used. From a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas filled with Zombies to a character who wasn’t even on set with the rest of the cast initially, Snyder and his team hit a home run with the looks of this film. I think I may have ended up with more questions than answers in the end, but I believe that was intentional.
The intriguing part is that this world is far from over; when Netflix gave Snyder the keys, he took them and ran. So not only is a prequel film, ‘Army of Thieves’ already filmed and will be released to Netflix later in 2021. There is also an anime series, ‘Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,’ in production (with Snyder directing two o the episodes himself) and most of the voice cast returning. To make things even more confusing, talks of a sequel from his creative team are already popping up. It was clear to me how they ended the film, but it’s interesting to see how risky they are.
The film itself is fun, albeit it was a little slow to get its footing. The opening was fantastic, reminiscent of the beginning from ‘Zombieland,’ but then there was a lull in the explanation and path the film followed to get to the core of the action. I find it interesting that Dave Bautista seems to be following in the footsteps of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Cena, and even those like Andre, the Giant, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, etc.; I guess it only makes sense as they are great at choreographed acting by trade.
It doesn’t need to be stated, but this has intense blood and gore; the language isn’t terrible considering. It has a lot of fun action scenes, though. I would use your best judgment before letting anyone under 13/14 watch it for sure.

Cujo and I both really loved this movie. Even though I was yelling at the tv, I like doing that, I enjoyed it start to finish.
Fun movie and who doesn’t like zombies. Should Snyder stick with horror and zombie movies I think so with Dawn of the Dead being his best movie in my opinion. This was okay
