CAPSULE REVIEW:

In Naomi Jaye's DARKEST MIRIAM, Toronto’s serene cityscape forms the perfect backdrop for the poignant tale of Miriam Gordon, a librarian wrestling with her father’s death. Britt Lower brilliantly captures Miriam’s journey from solitude to unexpected connections sparked by mysterious letters and the arrival of Janko, a sensitive immigrant cab driver played by Tom Mercier. Their relationship, evolving amidst themes of love and loss, becomes a beacon of hope in Miriam’s shadowed life.

More than just a setting, the Allen Gardens library emerges as a confluence for diverse city dwellers, and the enigmatic letters that echo Verdi’s "Rigoletto" link Miriam's present with her past. Directed with a blend of realism and surrealism, the film is visually arresting, deepened by standout performances from Sook-Yin Lee and Jean Yoon, enhancing the community's dynamic.

DARKEST MIRIAM is a compelling exploration of grief and vulnerability. It uses its narrative depth and genre-blending style to invite audiences into Miriam’s complex emotional landscape. The film’s unique storytelling, underlined by Charlie Kaufman's executive production, ensures a memorable viewing experience that lingers, urging viewers to confront their depths alongside Miriam.
