RAVING REVIEW: Returning to the mystical halls of Winterstein School, THE SCHOOL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS 2 celebrates the school's quarter-millennium performance celebration and brings us deeper into its magical world. With new whimsical creatures and burgeoning mysteries, this installment broadens its horizons, packing fantastical visuals and a hefty emotional punch that should resonate well with families looking for a blend of entertainment and substance. If you enjoyed the first film, you should also enjoy this one with the same energy, even if some of the same cast are returning.

Once again, Sven Unterwaldt is at the helm, whose directorial hand marries the whimsical with the profound journeys on screen. His vision for Margit Auer's cherished series remains clear: to deliver a narrative that is as engaging visually as it is emotionally, making it a perfect fit for viewers of all ages. Unterwaldt's flair for balancing the magical with the mundane ensures the sequel feels fresh and familiar.

As the students embark on their anniversary preparations, the film cleverly ties these efforts to their personal growth. The spotlight shines brightly on Anna-Lena, portrayed with poignant vulnerability by newcomer Lilith Johna; under the gentle guidance of her friend Ida (Emilia Maier,) Anna-Lena blossoms from a shy background player into a confident leading lady, embodying the film’s core message of self-discovery and the courage to be oneself.

Dominik Giesriegl’s orchestral score beautifully underscores the narrative, enhancing vital emotional moments that tug at the heartstrings. Though the magical animals retain a CGI quality, their charm is undeniable, and they play a pivotal role in the film's magical realism, which continues to enchant its audience.

The new cast members, as the film’s fresh faces, deliver solid performances that feel at home among the others. I would have liked to have seen a little more backstory of some of the new characters, and unfortunately, Maier takes a little more of a backseat (although still prominently featured.) One of my favorite aspects of the sequel was the willingness to lean into the musical aspect as heavily as they did. Even with the version I watched being an English dub, the performances and music added a unique touch to the film, making it more of an experience than the first film.

THE SCHOOL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS 2 revisits and revitalizes the themes introduced in its predecessor, infusing the story with new challenges and more intricate character arcs. It imparts valuable lessons on bravery, the essence of true self, and the strength of companionship.

This sequel balances the enchantment of its magical elements with the relatable trials its young protagonists face. It’s an ideal family film that entertains and encourages viewers to seek out the extraordinary in the ordinary and find courage within themselves. The overall production and heartfelt performances lay a solid foundation for a franchise that remains a source of inspiration and delight. I am excited to see the third film coming up!
