RAVING REVIEW: FIRST TIME CALLER takes us on a unique ride through the airwaves, combining suspense and critical insight in a way rarely seen in dramas. Under James Darling's and Abe Goldfarb's direction, we're ushered into the Denver-based studio of Brent Ziff ( portrayed by Goldfarb), where arrogance and vulnerability collide. The plot thickens with the introduction of Leo “Shorty” Short (Brian Silliman), whose prophecies are terrifyingly coming true, flipping the script and holding the audience captive with unforeseen twists.

Now, a heads up, Ziff is a character that you will hate from the start; that’s not a spoiler, but a critique of the character (this was intentional, but I just want to point out that you have to push through that aspect.) The movie, set predominantly within the confines of a radio studio, shines in its character dynamics. Brent's initially dismissive nature is challenged by Shorty's earnest and desperate attempts to convey his ominous messages. This interaction is the heart of FIRST TIME CALLER, with each character’s development adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding drama.

In this film, the exploration of media's power and the weight of responsibility it carries is depicted with a keen eye. The script, while set in a limited space, never feels confined. Instead, it captures the audience’s attention thanks to the strong screenplay and visionary direction.

The technical achievements on display with a limited budget in FIRST TIME CALLER are something to be admired. The film's cinematography and sound design, orchestrated by Darling, Goldfarb, and Kevin Chiu, transform a potentially mundane setting into a visual and auditory spectacle. The tension builds steadily, culminating in a climax that's as thought-provoking as it is gripping.

Goldfarb and Silliman give standout performances. Goldfarb's portrayal of Brent is a deep dive into a character grappling with unexpected consequences. At the same time, Silliman’s Leo is the perfect counterpoint, providing a subtle but essential balance in their on-air interactions.

FIRST TIME CALLER takes its time initially, depicting a typical day's routine in Brent's show. However, once it gains momentum with Shorty’s pivotal call, the narrative is steered into an intense examination of human nature amid unpredictable events. The sharp and powerful dialogue reflects the urgency of the evolving crisis, adding to the film’s intensity.

This film is a shining example of independent filmmaking and what can be achieved if the focus is put where the creativity shines the most. It proves that a compelling narrative, combined with solid acting and creative direction, can captivate audiences without needing a blockbuster budget or high-end special effects. FIRST TIME CALLER mirrors current societal issues and highlights the influential role of media in shaping public thought.

In summary, FIRST TIME CALLER is a solidly crafted drama that resonates with those seeking a film that marries suspense with contemporary themes. It stands as a powerful reminder of storytelling's impact and media's profound influence in our modern world, making it an essential watch for anyone interested in how entertainment intersects with societal reflection and commentary.
