RAVING REVIEW: Let's dive into the eclectic world of BAAN, a film that opens up its revolution with a scene painted in mysterious shades of red. This Leonor Teles signature touch piques curiosity and makes one sit up straight and think, "Okay, movie, you've got my attention!" And that's just the start! The cinematography plays with contrasting shades, balancing the fiery reds with the more neutral, muted whites, perhaps symbolic of the internal conflicts of its lead, El, flawlessly portrayed by Carolina Miragaia.
Enter Jay, portrayed by the dynamic Meghna Lall. She's the yin to El's yang, lighting up the screen with her street-smart vibes. Set against the exotic backdrops of Lisbon and Bangkok, their interactions offer an urban adventure that's equally introspective and energetic. This is a slow burn, but that’s part of why it works. Had this been a faster-paced film, I think part of the story would have been lost. Speaking of Lisbon, the film takes you on a deep dive into the heart of this enchanting city, unveiling the story of El, an architect wrestling with her inner demons. Meanwhile, Jay's enigmatic ties to Lisbon unravel slowly, thickening the plot and giving viewers more to chew on.
Now, BAAN doesn't just stop at intriguing character arcs. The storyline braids El and Kay's battles against societal prejudices. Their united stance against racial biases shines on screen, especially with the raw emotions Miragaia and Lall bring into their roles.
For those who are all about aesthetics, BAAN is like a refreshing sip from a visual cocktail, fusing the cultural essences of Lisbon and Bangkok. The film plays with scenic transitions, often leaving viewers pleasantly bewildered about what vista would grace the screen next. BAAN ensures your eyes remain glued to the screen, from heart-tugging performances to arresting shots and mood-setting lighting.
Buckle up for BAAN if you're itching for a film that differs from the norm. It’s a cinematic voyage that's bold, innovative, and oozing with creative visuals.
