Unfortunately, this was a pretty decent miss for me. I’ve been a pretty strong defender of what I’ve seen from Shudder. This is the first that I’ve seen from them that I haven’t enjoyed. Overall I try to stay somewhat positive in my reviews, letting the rating speak for itself. I’ve had a pretty solid string of good to great films with positives galore. This is the first one in a while that I just really didn’t connect with. If you’re a fan of slow-burn horror that is more about the idea of horror than horror itself, you may enjoy this.

On the plus side, I can most definitely say that this was a well-shot film. Even though I didn’t enjoy the movie, I will say that the performances were pretty solid overall. My bigger problem is that it was wasted on a story that just felt bland. I feel like this style of film has been done repeatedly. This was only amplified by the tension that the film built up throughout, kind of just ended with a whimper instead of a bang.

Overall, the film was somewhat predictable; I wasn’t shocked by any of the twists or turns of the film. There were multiple times that I was waiting and hoping that what I was expecting wasn’t going to happen.

You’ve likely seen the lead of the film Teresa Palmer (Rachel) in other projects, but I’ve never seen her in a role like this before. She’s probably most well known for her role in WARM BODIES and LIGHTS OUT, both fantastic performances, in my opinion. We get to know some of the characters inside and out with a small cast, yet I was still left feeling like I was missing out on so much. The relationship between mother and child was a unique view, but ultimately I was left without that longing or more profound feeling that makes me care for them.

This probably sounds harsher than most of my reviews, but I feel like, ultimately, I have to tell the truth; I’d be more than a little hypocritical if I weren’t honest while running Overly Honest Movie Reviews. The best thing is that film is 100% subjective; just because I didn’t enjoy one doesn’t mean you won’t. That right there is what gave me the drive to start reviewing movies. I loved so many out there that others didn’t or vice versa. I felt I needed to share my opinions while not spoiling things and ultimately allowing others to judge for themselves.
